Which is the best accommodation?

Yeah which is the bestest, nicest, funnerest, cosiest and most sociable of halls to stay in?

Basically, which hall has the best experience all round?

I think it is widely recognised that Cwrt Mawr is the choice of champs.

Though Alex halls are quite nice as well, but some people find the idea of living that far away from campus off-putting

If you minus the cosy part, then Penbryn. Otherwise, Cwrt Mawr.

Yeah from previous threads Iv'e read, Cwrt Mawr is the best, also PJM and Rosser. I haven't been to/ or going on an open day so I just need peoples opinions. The majority tend to say Cwrt Mawr though .

Would you say the quality of Alex beats the others if I don't mind the distance, what kind of numbers are you talking about? 1 mile? I don't mind walking, in fact that's what I do for fun

As a prospective fresher like yourself, what I say should obviously not be valued too highly, but when I was up for a weekend I did a lot of walking hither and thither, and, though I believe Alex. is only a mile or so from the campus, there's a great big hill in the way. Only halfway up it and I was in agony—no exaggeration (well… a little).

But, anyway, hopefully someone who actually knows the place well will chime in soon.

I just read your post properly (always a wise thing to do if you're going to reply to it) and realised that I did little to answer your actual question. D'oh!

EDIT: Why did I just quote myself? I'm losing my mind.

Ok assuming you want self-catered then, alot of it is luck. The only advantage to Rosser is the (small) ensuite shower room - compared to the refurbed CM blocks the kitchens/rooms dont seem to be so modern, and of course the ensuite eats into your room size a bit.

PJM is a nice place, but it's a bit quieter than living in halls, so may not be the best choice for first years, unless that's one of your preferences. They have started refitting some PJM kitchens, but at the moment most of them are still the older style, though this isn't that bad at the end of the day. Also the room sizes are quite variable in PJM, there is one large bedroom in most houses, and some of the downstairs ones are a bit smaller. Still, you don't really need a massive room anyway!

I've lived in a CM block that was probably redone a few years ago now and was really pleased with it. The kitchen is nice, and the showers are impressive too, especially after spending a year in a slightly run-down private house in town! The rooms aren't massive, but there's more than enough space for most people, lots of storage, and a sink - something else you don't get in PJM - once you get used to a sink in your room it's hard to live without it!

As already said, Alex Halls are probably just over a mile from campus. But apparently rooms are quite variable.. some are nicer than others, and of course there is no guarantee of the sea view! The walk isnt that bad once you get used to it, as long as you dont mind getting up earlier for lectures in the morning. In some ways it helps, cos you're awake by the time you get there, whereas up on campus youre up 10 minutes before and the 5 minutes walk doesnt really give you enough fresh air to stay awake for an hour or two!

I thought that the Cwrt Mawr Halls looked the best when I went to the visiting day. I though the only good thing about Rosser was the fact that it the rooms were en-suite. Apart from that I think the rest of Cwrt Mawr was better, bigger rooms and the kitchen facilities looked better.

Me and my friends are leaning towards Cwrt Mawr at the moment.

Another point: How does iternet connection work in the halls? I assume there's some way to get online in all of them but is it limited? Will I be able to browse the internet as I would at home and most of all can I hook my Xbox up to play online while at university? >,>

Internet is wireless in all halls but brynderw (i believe), everything works but torrents/p2p stuff
Also megavideo rarely works, as it counts everyone on the uni network as the same user, so unless you're lucky, it just comes up saying that you've exceeded your daily limit
xbox live is a strange one, some people get it to work, and some don't. You can't just plug it into the wall and play, it has to be through your computer, theres a thread on it somewhere on here
last year Cwrt mawr didnt have wireless. not sure if thats changed. if it hasnt you get an internet connection in your room. and yeah xbox can be used, no idea how but it can

So in brief for a fresher what would be the overall consensus for the best halls to apply for?

From personal experience:

Penbryn if you don't mind catered accom (and aren't too picky about your food). Sharing a floor with up to 22 people puts it up there as the most sociable accomodation, not sure if it was just luck but, but i'm not the most outgoing person ever and it took me next to no effort to meet lots of people. Downsides is fairly basic rooms, and a tiny 'kitchen', also found it a bit noisier than elsewhere - but think that comes down to luck somewhat.

Cwrt Mawr for self catered. Most are refurbished and accomodation/rooms are a nicer standard than most other places on campus. Should still be fairly sociable with about 10 people in most flats, 6 flats in a block. Big kitchen with a proper table, storage etc and nice showers!

Obviously Rosser is your only option on campus if you want ensuite, but personally I wouldn't want to live there, and sharing toilets/showers really isn't a problem.

I would avoid Alexandra halls if I were you, honestly >.< The building needs some serious attention and maintenance. I'd go with Cwrt/PJM/Rosser/Trefloyne.

And to whoever said that "everything works except torrents/p2p", lies! Most things work yes, but only after you manually request to unblock certain ports first so beware.
Do you get a sink in Alex like Cwrt Mawr?

I've never had anything not work other than torrents/p2p programs

How many choices do you have to put down on the accommodation form, does anyone know, and has anyone received the letter yet??
