Girlss: On my period and I have a Duke of Edinburgh expedition tomorrow :/

hey all,
I have a Duke of Edinburgh expedition tomorrow through to Sunday, and I only started my period yesterday so should have it for all of it. This is my first expedition and was just wondering how I would be able to change sanitary pads during the day because apparently you have to wee in fields and all sorts... and there would only be proper toilets at the camp sites during the evening.
Any advice from those who have been in the same situation would be appreciated.
(:

Maybe use tampons instead as they are more discreet/comfortable?

I'm with Randomgirl.
Also, bring those little fragrenced bags you can buy in Boots or supermarkets, and put them all in a big bag, the guys will never need to know.
Also, bring painkillers, just in case :hugs:

I don't have any and the nearest shop to my house is agess away and I won't have time in the morning.

I had my period for 3 days in a desert. It could have been the worst experience of my life ever. Get tampons as soon as you can.

I respect you women

find a tree to hide behind? its not like you stand with everyone else in a row when you have a wee is it so have a bit of a swift changeover while you're at it and sling the old one in a bush

I had the same problem.

Tampons. No problem at all.

All-girls school so that isn't really an issue, thank goodness (:

i had that on my gold! 4 days of hell i made the rest of my group (all boys) stop cos i had massive cramp and couldnt walk. they didnt understand.

my advice, fragrenced bags, trousers with pockets so that when you change your not carrying pack a lil bag and go heavy duty with the pads!
also nurofen do amazing period pain things which stick on the inside of your pants are warm like a hot water bottle and are truly magic!!!

good luck
and remmeber DofE is fun fun fun

Ouch, period on a hike is awful I agree! Definitely agree take scented bags for used pads and painkillers, and also something to wash your hands with! Try and be as quick as you can, and make sure you have lots of tissue/loo roll. Make sure its a bush as far out of the way and hidden as you can, you don't want some other poor soul going there and finding a blood patch...ugh. Oh and put it all in an opaque carrier bag which you can fit in the side pocket of your rucksack so its accessible and you don't have to stand there finding it all with people wondering what you're looking for. If you have kit check try not to draw attention to it, if they ask just say 'girls stuff' and give them a look so they know not to ask! Or tell them they reeeeeally don't want to know - if they still pester its therefore their fault, but they should take the hint  Take some painkillers before you go too, hiking with stomach ache and knowing the pills won't kick in for ages isn't nice. Good luck on your expedition! Hope you enjoy it anyway

Haha, this reminds me of when I was on DofE.

My friend was having to change her tampon in a tent in the middle of nowhere, then the fit PE teacher came along and started dismantling the tent around her so we could pack up and go, threatened to stick his head inside and see if we'd cleaned up properly, and panicking she just shouted "Wait! I'm in here changing my period!" He just looked confused and embarassed and ran away

Anyway, you'll have oppurtunities to do it, you just have to find somewhere discreet, or do it when you go to the toilet, and make use of real toilets whenever you get a chance to. Perhaps ask your friends to bring some tampons if you can't get any?

...mabye that's why she (only girl in the group) was so slow and kept stopping all the time on the gold hike and perhaps that's why she was crying when we all had a go at her for holding us up so much. Oops

Well, you don't want to cart something like that around with you all day do you? if you were bursting for a crap, you wouldn't carry the used paper back home

In our defence she didn't say anything at all (we would have been understanding)...so we all (4 chaps) got really mad at her for constantly making us late to each and every checkpoint. Inevitably we had a chat (we ganged up on her and told her off - because of risk of failing gold hike) and she just stood there silently and began to cry!

I felt so horrible (even more so now I've read this thread)
