Notes on ellipses before you post

Here is thethe first post of the earlier thread. Hopefully it will not get idiotically moved this time for absolutely no reason except for someone's vendetta.

Please do not use endless ellipses (...). They are incredibly annoying to read and by overusing them you are taking power away from their correct use. If you must use them please be aware that an ellipsis consists of three dots; not two or four or any other number. Be aware that an ellipsis should be used to mark an omission of some sort. If you want to indicate a pause then use a comma (,) or a full stop (.).

Sorry to be a pedant but it's been really annoying me of late especially on this H&R forum.

Why should anyone listen to you though? You can't dictate the way people post on this forum.

Oh, that's a bad habit I have...
I seem to do it an awful lot when typing in forums etc...
I'll try to stop...
Maybe...

Ok, don't listen to me then but on your head be it. Don't blame me for neg repping you if your post annoys me because you can't be bothered to punctuate correctly.

As I said in the other thread, I know what it is and when it should be used. I knowingly use it wrongly on msn and forums to dictate a pause longer than a comma, but shorter than a full stop.

You're welcome to tell me not to do it any more, but you're not going to change anything... you don't get to decide how I construct my posts. You can neg rep me til the cows come home, but thankfully I have things I care more about than little points on an internet message board.

I make sense, I spell and punctuate otherwise correctly, and it's used as a tool of punctuation, not out of lazyness. Get off your high horse and find something better to do.

I agree.

And for your information MB I really did not move it to GC because of my vendetta.

Who else thinks this should stay in H&R and not GC?

Not me. Whats it got to do with Health or Relationships? Nothing.

To be perfectly honest it should be in About if its going to be anywhere but it's not doing any harm here for the time being and as MB was expression his opinion re. the H&R forum mainly it may as well stay here for a little while so the people he wants to read it; can.

... or a semi-colon. Please note that I had to delete the example of the semi-colon, since it was displayed as a smiling thing.

You could have serious problems with your health if you confuse the colon and the semi-colon.

Ok that's fine  I'll let the other mods deal with this thread as they see fit.

I think it would be highly mean-spirited to critique someone for poor punctuation on a forum which is dedicated to support and to 'neg-rep' them for it would be vindictive in the extreme. I believe this is a forum dedicated to emotional support and therefore people who post on it may be in a highly distressed state. Why would anyone with an ounce of compassion and decency in them add to that distress by subjecting their punctuation to scrutiny?

Oh, and Musicboy, you are correct: ellipses do indicate omissions but has it ever occurred to you that, on this forum, they may represent something people are unable to say. By all means apply this (rather petty) rule to the rest of the forum but, for God's sake, not on the support forum.

In my opinion something that you can't say means that it doesn't exist.

What if you had an unfortunate accident and lost the ability to communicate? Would that mean that everything ceases to exist?

It shows that your thinking... i seem to do it all the time...

I looked it up to check, and it's perfectly okay to use an ellipsis when a sentence is trailing off into silence.

Reply 19

Yep that is totally true
