Moulsecoomb Campus - Dangerous?

I've been warned by a current student that the Moulsecoomb campus is incredibly dangerous, and not just after dark. I had originally planned to commute there from Eastbourne, but was talked away from using the trains as the Moulsecoomb station is a target of local yobs, with poor to no security and plenty of trouble-makers attacking students.
After deciding to drive, a former student then warned me that locals on the estate also vandalise parked cars near the campus, at any time of the day, and not to walk to my parked car after dark.

Is this ridiculous hype on their behalf? I’m female and so are these two students. Have any current students at the Moulsecoomb site had any trouble, male or female?
I've heard nothing about this!

Neither have I! And I live right opposite the moulsecoomb campus, with my bedroom window facing it (lovely view. hah). First time I've honestly heard of that, I know people who live in the moulsecoomb accomodation who have never mentioned that to me. Also a housemate of mine studies there and she's never mentioned anything relating to vandalism, yobs or attacks.

Sounds like a job for SuperCat.

Moulsecoomb as an area isn't exactly Brighton's nicest. However, the campus is spitting distance from the station. There are parts of Moulsecoomb I would avoid when I lived there, but the walk from the station to the uni buildings isn't one of them.

Thanks posters. Hearing this makes me feel a lot better about my decision to go to this University.

It is incredible hype! It's true that Moulscoomb isn't the nicest place in Brighton, but its definitly got lots of students in the area. And in my opinion, anywhere with students is pretty safe

OK, let me be honest with you from what I have seen and know at daytime mouslecoomb train station is fine.

And in no way is it true that the parked cars in the university would be vandalised at daytime.

I leave the uni library normally at around 7, sometimes midnight to catch a bus to falmer, and it seems to be safe enough.

Tbh if it really was that dangerous, I doubt that a uni would build a campus there...

I can tell you that the area of mouslecoomb where the houses are around is not a good area in my opinion and i would not suggest walking home by yourself in that area...buts thats it really!

If you will be staying late at the library, then it is best to go by car, you can park your car right outside the library which is a lot safer and easier to get to.

I used to walk to and from moulsecoomb station for the last train at midnight and always felt fine and had no problems. I don't think I even saw any yobs! You should be fine. As said before its not the nicest area but is better than a lot of inner city areas I know.

Its fine. While it might be one of the slightly dodgier areas I wouldn't say that it is dangerous. I have lived in the Moulsecoomb/lewes road area for nearly five years now and I haven't had problems

I lived in Liverpool for four years, before the capital of culture fiasco. How rough can Brighton be? I've had my fair share of run ins with crackheads.
I've lived in Moulsecoomb for a few years as a student and it's fine! Never had any problems what-so-ever. My housemate and I both own pretty modern cars and they've never come to any harm parked on the street where we live. Some bits of Moulsecoomb aren't so nice but it's a pretty big area and those bits are well well away from the uni and the station etc. Think of the mouslecoomb area like a small town - there's always some good and some bad but my bit is lovely - in fact almost too middle class and lovely for when I was a student!
Dude, I wouldn't commute. All my friends that commute to their university of choice are missing out so much on the experience. It's not like school where you turn up with your packed lunch and learn from teacher! You learn so much more if you live in the town.

Also, I live in Moulsecoomb and it's fine. Good transport links, convenient, etc. A few chavs just like in any town but if you don't take risks you're fine : )

Moulsecoomb campus isn't dangerous. CCTV everywhere. The station is reputed to be haunted though if you believe in all that stuff.
Errm, isn't the Moulsecoomb campus University of Brighton, not University of Sussex?
