I cannot stress enough how important I believe it is to apply to the strengths of your application. If you have a specifically weak aspect of your application, like GCSEs for myself, apply to somewhere that picks for interviews based on an aspect of your application that is particularly strong. I scored well in the UKCAT, so applied to both Manchester and Durham because of it, and got interviews at both places. Also, on that note don't be put off from applying because you haven't got 12 A*s at GCSE, compared to most applicants my GCSEs are quite poor, however that didn't prevent me from applying and in the end getting an offer. Good luck!

Universities applied to and decisions:

Southampton: Rejection

Once again, I would say choose your universities cleverly. I chose Barts because 1) I really liked it, and 2) their particular admission procedure that year was very favourable to my application.
Also, definitely revise for UKCAT with practise books and stuff. It is incredibly helpful for you to have a high score, but don't be put off with a low one, just don't apply to a uni that uses it in their assessment unless your certain you excel at the rest of the criteria  Notts and soton were my 'on a whim' applications and thats how they turned out. The other two were my clever choices where one worked and the other nearly did aha

- King's College London: Rejection post-interview (Interview 6/12/11)
- University of Nottingham: Interview 13/01/12 - Withdrew pre-interview.

Advice: Plan your application well in advance, I did my first work experience placement in the first term of Lower Sixth (Oct 2010) and had completed all of my work exp by the beginning of the summer holidays of Lower Sixth. Also gather lots of work experience and extra currics so you can pick and choose the ones which fit your statement best and make it flow - I went to a couple of lectures, did another work exp placement and another voluntary placement but none of this went on my personal statement as it didn't really link well.

Also, take the admissions tests seriously - I advise about 3-4 weeks in summer of revision for the UKCAT and revise about a month before the BMAT. 3 of the 4 unis I applied to (the London ones) take their respective tests more seriously and so you need to be hitting at least the average but preferably higher.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about applying or about the unis (I'd say I have a good knowledge about UCL, ICL and KCL)

Now that the application process is over, I realise the importance of choosing your universities wisely. I applied to all the places that I liked, but they did not necessarily play to my strengths. Do your research on your chosen universities and their admissions policies thoroughly. Don't take admissions tests lightly, make sure you prepare for the UKCAT. If you are lucky enough to get an interview, work on your technique, have a mock interview with a teacher/doctor. Lastly, good luck! Let me know if you have any questions.

My advice for you guys would be to prepare for the admissions tests very well and not take them for granted, as a minor slip up or bad day can cost you a university place, so make sure you are comfortable in your preparation for them. Also if you are planning to apply to Cambridge, I recommend applying if you have very strong UMS marks and are comfortable with all sections of the BMAT (1 and 2 in particular though).

Feel free to contact me if you have any queries regarding the application process or the unis which I applied to, will do my best to help out

I'm an international student from Singapore

Year of Entry: 2012

Deferred?: No

GCSEs: I was in the integrated programme so did not take O levels/GCSE. In secondary 4, I got 8A1s, 1A2 and 1B3 for my school internal assessment (Universities may or may not look at IP results in place of O levels).

AS Grades: N/a (I got CCDE/c at the end of JC1 and BBCD/b for JC2 prelims if you're wondering.)

A level Results: AAAAab (H2: Bio, chem, maths, econs; H1: project work, general paper)

UKCAT (if applicable): 650 average

Work Experience/Volunteering:
- 1 week attachment at haematology
- 2 day attachment at paediatric orthopaedics
- 9 months in a nursing home as a volunteer helping out in games for the elderly
- 3 months tuition befriending volunteer at a student care centre
- 10 weeks volunteer at Riding for the Disabled Association as a sidewalker

Extra Curricular:
- Member of school orchestra (with one random year as section leader)
- Volunteerism representative in school for 2 years
- Youth grassroots work

Universities applied to and decisions:
Aberdeen - Interview on 16/2 in Singapore- Offer on 26/3
Leeds - rejection without interview on 27/3 (I'm apparently ranked 2072 out of 3847...)
Southampton - Interview on 18/1 in KL Malaysia - Offer on 13/3
St. Andrews - Interview on 14/3 via skype - Offer on 20/3

National university of Singapore - Interview and Offer

General Advice (perhaps some are more relevant for internationals/Singaporeans):
- You don't have to be a superbly talented all-rounded genius to be successful in your medical application (at least for myself, I was never involved in any academic competitions and never took up high leadership positions).
- Many universities here want to know what you take away from your experiences more than what you have achieved, so concentrate more on the former in your personal statement and interviews
- If you don't score well for school assessments, you don't get predicted As and you don't get to apply to medicine. Therefore while pursuing extra-curriculars, make sure not to neglect your studies.
- Some universities require you to fly over to UK for your interviews while some will send people over to Singapore/Malaysia, so do enquire about this before you chose your universities
- The universities are unlikely to provide information on whether they assess IP results in place of O levels on their website/prospectus, so enquire about this too.

Feel free to pm if there's anything!

Universities applied to and decisions:
Cambridge - Pooled, Offer A*AA FIRM
UCL - Offer AAAC INSURANCE
Nottingham - Offer AAA
Birmingham - Offer AAA

General Advice
- Its definately quality rather than quantity. In your personal statement, you only have a limited amount of space and this meant that I couldn't include everything I did as its much better to focus on two or three experiences. They tended to ask about my work experience in the hospital a lot and grilled for specific details eg. what did I observe the F1s doing, how did they communicate?...etc. They also liked to ask about the nursing home and more specifically, how the residents felt.
- Try and get as much practice for interviews as possible. This can be from anyone including teachers, friends, parents, doctors..etc.
- Choose your universities carefully. You can make an informed decision from reading prospectuses, doing online research and talking to students. I found the latter quite helpful as the 'official' information can often be vague. However, do remember that although incredibly useful, advice from students may be more based upon hearsay. Open days are also useful to get a general idea of the atmosphere of the city.
- Be aware of the waiting. Medics have to send their application early but tend to have to wait the longest. Different medical schools vary in how quickly they get back to you. Birmingham start very early, Oxbridge interviews are in December..etc. I was lucky that I was done by the end of January but some of my friends have only just finished. This is can be very nerve racking but in most cases, there is nothing you can do and its simply the admission process.

I will try and add some more when I think of it and have more time. If anyone has any questions, feel free to message me. And good luck!

Year of Entry: 2012

Deferred?: No

GCSEs: A*A*A*A*AAABBB
A Level Results: AAAa
Previous degree: Physics BSc 2:1

UKCAT: 700
GAMSAT: 62

Work Experience:
1 year as HCA
8 months ward volunteer
3+ years volunteer with visually-impaired children
1+ year Nightline volunteer

Extra Curricular:
Life drawing
Growing vegetables
Playing piano
Yoga
Travelling to Central America and South Africa

Universities applied to and decisions:
Nottingham A101 - Rejected after interview
Warwick A101 - Rejected after interview
SGUL A101 - Rejected after interview
Swansea A101 - Rejected without interview

Advice:
- Know your strengths and weaknesses
- Do practice for the UKCAT
- Shadowing is not as important as hands-on experience. Working as an HCA is incredibly good work experience.
- Practice for interview. I improved a lot in subsequent interviews, but I should have been in that place before my first one knowing how nervous I can get.
- Apply strategically - apply to places that give you a better chance of getting an interview. E.g. I should not have applied to Swansea, as I had good UKCAT and GAMSAT scores so I should have applied to somewhere that bases interview offers strongly on test scores.

International from Singapore  Took a gap year to apply for Medicine in the UK -- the best decision I ever made.

Year of Entry: 2012
Deferred?: No
GCSEs: Did not take GCSEs due to the Integrated Programme. Students in the programme can skip the O levels (GCSEs equivalent).
AS Grades: AABB equivalent
A2 Prediction/Results: Achieved AAABaa (H2 Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics & Economics, H1 General Paper, Project Work)
UKCAT (if applicable): 732.5 (Can't remember individual subsections but my VR was the lowest at 630 and AR the highest at 820)

Work Experience/Volunteering:

3 days shadowing a Gasteroenterologist
2 weeks volunteering at North Vietnam with my school
2 weeks Ob/Gyn private clinic
3 months Admin staff at an online retail store
3.5 months Admin staff at National Cancer Centre
1 year Instructor at KUMON
2 years Tutoring
a few days volunteering with a hospice

Extra Curricular:

6 years choir member, with 1 year as President and 1 year as Section Leader
2 years photography club

Universities applied to and decisions:

Aberdeen - Interview - Conditional AAA Insurance
Leicester - Interview - Rejection
Newcastle - Interview - Conditional AAA FIRM
Nottingham - Rejection

I also got an International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship from Newcastle

General Advice:

- Do be sure you really, really want Medicine as a career path. That said, taking a gap year may be the best thing you've ever done (as it did for me) because you can find out more about yourself and the reasons for choosing Medicine. Getting the right jobs/attachments would be beneficial as well to sort out your thinking.

- Do give your 100% for every single aspect of the selection process! Firstly, choose the correct school according to your strengths and weaknesses. For example, schools that shortlist for interview purely using UKCAT should be the top of your list if you have a fantastic UKCAT score.

For me, I had to maximise my chances because I can't really afford to take another gap year, but if you have nothing to lose, choose 2 top schools, 1 school that is of your standard and 1 school you think you definitely can get into (although I have no idea how you judge that).

- Be calm and confident during the interview process. For my interview, all of the interviewers only asked about the work at the National Cancer Centre so I guess work experience > volunteering/job shadowing. Also do not be afraid to speak of your hobbies or include them in your UCAS form/PS which is what I did because they like to see all-rounded individuals.

Hope this helps! Feel free to PM me for any help, especially international/Singaporean applicants
