Lopes Hall??

I'm hopefully going to Exeter in oct and originally I was probably gna put down Holland as my first choice of accomodation but I've recently heard sum negative press about it and am now seriously considering Lopes or even Hope....wat does every1else think??

Ne1 have ne opinions on why Lopes would be better than Holland? Is Holland's bad rep justified?

Who else is going for Lopes? And why?

Ne feedback on this wd be really appreciated!! :smile:

1) its closer to town
2) its not at the top of a very big hill
3) its smaller and thus has much better community feel

apart from where it is, i dont actually know anything about it or know of anyone who stayed there, so sorry but this is where my knowledge ends!

Ive also put Exeter in as my firm for Law!
Im in the same position as you. Originally I loved the look of Holland, but now I've decided against it as from what ive heard it lacks the atmosphere of some of the other halls.
Im thinking along the same lines as you, possibly Hope or Lopes as first choice. I cant make judgement on either as I didn't see any halls, except Mardon, on the open day. Which open day did you go on for Law btw?
I think ill just wait until they send all the accomadation stuff threough and then make my choice. I dont know if you know about these websites;

I cant load the pics on the Lopes one, but I found the Hope one quite helpful!Hope that helps :smile:

Hope Hall looked really nice on the open day
I felt as if it was a place I would be happy to live in and the atmosphere was warm and friendly

I only saw Mardon very briefly, but from what I saw I thought it was quite nice. It's on campus which is def a bonus, and it's got great views. I think some facilities are shared with Holland, which is right nextdoor- not sure whether that's a good or bad thing?!
I think it might be my third choice, with Hope and Lopes coming before.
Has anyone else decided yet?

I lived in Mardon in my first year but that was the year before they started building Holland so we had all the facilities in hall. It was amazing I loved it! As far as atmospheres go it was second to none! and I don't think that now they share a bar and dining room with holland is a bit negative since they still have their own common room! Its the smallest hall but not in a chlostrophobic kind of way. I was in a shared room and loved it. My roommate and I lived together for the whole 3 years we were in Exeter and are still very close! I think in the smaller halls you make a wider circle of friends.

Just becareful when applying to Hope (and possiby lopes but not sure). Main House Hope is beautiful and has the bar there. Lopes and Kilmorie don't have a bar they use the one in Hope. But yeah Main house hope is lovely but it there are also annexes which are just old houses that have been converted! These are nice and in them you do get a nice community again but they are small groups of you and you may feel a little isolated from other people.

And its not the case that Mardon (and Holland) is full of sloanes! Every hall has it's fair share! And most of them aren't as bad as people say and the ones that are don't mix with everyone else anyway!

I'd say between Exeter Halls (hope etc) and Mardon go by where your department is! So Language students, physics, maths and engineering! go for Mardon. Social sciences, business, English, humanities and Law go for Law that way unless you want to use the sports centre you don't have to climb the hill as much!

i went to the law open day on the 16th of february which did u go to?....on the day my group had a sneaky look inside Holland Hall and i was really impressed by it because it was basically like a hotel and cos im such a girl i really want to have en-suite accomodation and Holland Hall therefore seemed perfect! but i also think that having my own bathroom won't be mch of a condolence if the atmosphere at Holland isn't very good so i may have to compromise...but i might get lucky and manage to get en-suite accomodation at Lopes or if I'm really lucky at Hope! (considering it has 9 en-suite rooms this is extremely unlikely!).

yeh ive managed to load some of the photos, but not all of them are working. Im at school atm (meant to be doing an essay, but cant concentrate at all!) and the computers are like 20 yrs old so it'll prob take a day to load one photo, so i'll try when I get home. lol.

Did u have that Antony Mussons, or something like that, doing your talk on the course? What did u think of him??! lol! We walked past Holland on the open day, didnt get 2 go inside, but it looked really nice from the outside.Really annoyed I didnt get 2 see Hope or Lopes though. But if there was another hill to climb I probabaly would have collpased!

hey,

i'm putting Lopes Hall as my first choice for accomodation. I was going to choose Holland Hall (because I really want an ensuite!) but after hearing all the bad stuff about it its put me off.
I think Lopes looks really nice and to be honest I reckon anywhere your gonna end up you'll make yout own friends etc and like it anyway!
Anyway here hopefully doing history?!!
