Visit to Liverpool review...

Heya guys!

I promised I'd post some info about my open day visit to Liverpool. I mostly looked around accommodation so here goes:

Precinct accommodation:

Mulberry Court: I really didn't like these halls. They were very small and looked like council flats. The rooms were particularly small, not all rooms have a wash basin and telephone point. I know it's not meant to be the Ritz but this hall needs some serious attention. The kitchen was small and really needs updating - you have half a shelf of fridge space. This is very little considering it's self catering. Launderette was ok but might be a bit far away depending on which block you're in. There is no car parking or cleaning of bedrooms here.

I asked the guide if he felt left out being on campus and he said no because he could go to the bars in town. A positive for this hall has to be the proximity to the main campus. However, the nearest tesco is down Brownlow Hill. It's a metros so it's more expensive and smaller than usual. Getting down the hill is easy but it might not be so easy with bags of shopping. there are buses and the taxi is about £2.70 so not very expensive at all if you share.

I didn't really like the atmosphere at these halls - the lack of facilities may contribute to this. As for the bathroom, there was no shower, also the number of people you share with depends on which block you're in. This is the same for most halls though. Bathrooms are cleaned once a week and were quite basic throughout all the halls I looked at.

Philharmonic Court: I quite liked these halls. These are cheaper and much nicer than Mulberry Court so I would definately opt for this hall if you're looking to apply on Precinct. The 2 halls on Precinct are close together, so the same applies for the distance to Tesco and Uni.

Kitchen is much much more spacious than Mulberry Court and alot newer as well. You get a shelf each plus a large chest freezer - I think you get microwaves in both Precinct accommodations but you have to bring kettles and toasters etc. You get a double cupboard to put your food in (I can't remember how much in Mulberry Court). There were 2 hobs, compared to only 1 in Mulberry Court. The hallway was alot bigger than Mulberry Court as well. The bathrooms are all being updated so they'll have showers hopefully by September as well as baths. Quite basic again but more spacious than Mulberry Court.

Every room has a wash basin. Room size was alot more reasonable than at Mulberry Court. More grassy areas and the launderette was not far. These halls had a great atmosphere and there seemed to be lots of social stuff going on. Also, there is car parking here - it is limited though. The guide that was showing me around said that she only got a car at Christmas and managed to get a pass - but this may vary year to year.

Surrounding areas were ok, I guess it doesn't have as much as a homely feel as the non-precinct accommodation. But you are in the centre of town.

Greenbank halls

Derby and Rathbone: I didn't get the chance to actually look inside a room but the outside appearance was pleasant enough. However, these halls are alot older than Roscoe and Gladstone. The dining room was ok - but not as nice as R & G. The bar was really really nice  but I was told that it does get very crowded - pints were cheap though (4 for £5). There were lots of social stuff going on here.

Roscoe and Gladstone: First and foremost the room size was AMAZING - I mean it was so big!!! And it is really nice inside too. What you gain in room size you lose in kitchen size - which is literally a shoebox with a microwave, sink and fridge. Only big enough for one person - but I guess you wouldn't use it very much.

Each room has a telephone and was basin. The bathroom was basic but adequate - there is either a bath or shower on each floor. Car parking seemed to be in abundance here but I was warned that it may be limited. There is more space and likelihood of getting a space at R & G as it is smaller and there's more spaces. There were streets outside where you could park as well, but I was warned that alot of buses go past so you may get a dent :redface:S

The dining room was very nice and seemed more modern than D & R. In contrast the bar was much more pubish and not as nice as D & R - but you can use each others bars and facilities - this means you could go to Carnatic as well. These halls seemed more peaceful than the Precinct accommodation. Rooms get cleaned every week and communual areas twice a week. You will have to pay bus fare being at these halls which are £65 a term but you get 10% off at the arriva website.

There's a cop shop, which means that there's a police officer on site every Weds so you can report things and get advice etc. As the halls are so small you each get an individual pidgeon hole for post which is lockable.

Oh and you also have a TV room which again is shared between all halls but has sky TV - there was lots of space in this room and looked like it had recently been refurbished (with bean bags/chairs etc). Launderette was nice here - lots of washers compared to students so that's a definate plus. Prices were the same across all halls £2 for a wash but the drying's free. The surrounding area is really great - Sefton park is about 5 minutes away and is the largest park in the UK - it was unbelievably huge. It looked absolutely amazing.

Carnatic Halls

I didn't get a chance to look around these. One thing to bear in mind though is that in Greenbank you have 1 dining room to about 400 in each hall. In Carnatic there's 1 dining room for more than a 1000 people so you can imagine the difference in waiting times. In addition, there's 1 launderette for all 6 halls!!! I was told that room size is roughly the same as Greenbank, maybe slightly wider although not noticeable. In Roscoe and Gladstone you get a balcony so it depends what you prefer.

Sports centre: This is in the centre of Liverpool, there are various other sections - apparently there's one near carnatic but I didn't look around these. Fitness suite has been refurbished as of 2004 and is very nice. Swimming pool hasn't been modernised yet, but they said it should be done by 2006. There are various courts which seemed in good condition. Prices are £48 (a year) to hire out a court and to go swimming. But for £80 you get unlimited use of the fitness suite as well for the year.

I know I've gone on for ages and I've probably left lots of stuff out but feel free to ask me and Q's....

Soon to be scouser... :p:

No probs at all. I've been wanting to ask all this stuff for ages. I wrote a list of questions to ask so I wouldn't forgot!! lol. I'm a gap year student so most of my friends went to uni this year so they told me all the things to look out for. I made a mistake though, Carnatic actually has 2 laundrettes for the 6 halls. I think Carnatic has more of a lively atmosphere than Greenbank as the bar has been recently refurbished. I know a Liverpool student who said that McNair is best for atmosphere so maybe it's worth looking into that hall - but the laundrette is further away which might be a bit of prob.

Also, I forgot to mention that there's a Tesco express nearby both Greenbank and Carnatic (Rose Kiln lane) which is only about 5-10 minutes walk - this area seemed to be flat so I don't think it would be much of a problem walking. I'm sure you'll be happy at any hall you go to - but there seems to be more of a social atmosphere at Carnatic/Greenbank so it's great for making friends etc.

dangit. I knew I should have gone R&G over D&R

ahwell.

[thanks - excellent info]

Again, no probs - D & R was nice too, but it depends if you'd like something a bit older (at D & R) or something more modern (at R & G). The atmosphere was great at D & R too but you can use the facilities at both halls in Greenbank (not sure about the dining hall though) so you're not losing out on much.

Omfg! Bath or shower on each floor?!! Christ I cannot live without a shower, ewww gross.

This was the case in most of the halls - if you're worried about sharing between lots of people then apply to L block at R & G (only 3 people sharing a bath/shower) or Dale Hall which has 2 people to a bath. I'm not sure about how many people share exactly at each hall as it does vary from block to block.

There are ensuite facilities at Derby and Rathbone, these are self catering though. However, you are able to use the dining hall at D & R and you pay approx. £2.80 for a meal. The guide told me that these rooms are very limited and it tends to be girls that apply for an ensuite room. In the booklet it says that these rooms are reserved for first years with unconditional offers. Otherwise you'll have to look into private accommodation if you want an ensuite.
Wow you took in loads of information, more than I did on any open day!

One thing though, are you sure Sefton Park is the biggest park in the UK?! I've walked round it in under an hour, unless theres some other section to it we missed?

Still, very good summary of things.

All that information from one visit?? Thanks very much. How far away from the Uni are the R&G halls? I can't imagine not having a shower each morning! Need that to wake me up!!

Lol - well I'm not sure which halls have showers as I think it'll vary from block to block. Maybe you should call up the halls to ask them? In response to Amber, Carnatic/Greenbank are about 3 miles away from the main Uni. I've been told it's about 20 minutes by bus and that there's a bus stop very near both Carnatic and Greenbank.

I stand corrected - I looked it up on the net - it seems that Richmond Park in London covers 2,500 acres compared to Sefton Park, which only has 200 acres!! I do know that it's the largest park in Liverpool - sorry for the confusion!!!

Wow, thanks for all the info!

I didn't go to see Greenbank, but did see Carnatic, which I though were amazing. True about the dining hall having to cater for everyone, but everyone will be going in at different times anyway, so we were told it wasn't a problem, and also they have a fantastic bar, just small enough that everyone can mingle, and with lovely leather sofas and stuff. The menu in the dining hall looked fab, and the room size was good, I was so impressed.

Not surprisingly, Carnatic will be my first choice -- I think where you actually go to visit has a huge impact on where you decide to go.

I agree with you catty. Carnatic is amazing but as I visited Greenbank I applied there as I knew what it was like inside. Carnatic bar looks so kool though...I'm sure I'll visit it once or twice.
