Ingrowing toenail (not for the squeamish!)

Right I've had this problem on my right big toe now for years and years. It started out as a football injury, which caused an ingrowing toenail. I had an operation to remove it, which was more painful than I expeted but it seemed to do the job.

About 6 months after that it came back and my doc said 'hopefully' it'd go away.. it didn't so a year after that I got the operation again (last september/october). AND NOW IT'S COME BACK AGAIN! Just this week, it's been real painful when it touches anything (although I can wear shoes alright still).

The nail hasn't grown back fully (it's not supposed to I don't think) but around the painful spot there seems to be some kind of blister or something... or some skim inflamation. I don't know what it is.

Should I see the doctor asap or would it be ok to wait a couple of weeks? I want this thing gone for good! :bawling: It really hinders my ability to play football, too...

If it's affecting your football playing ability I'd go see a doc!

Just go, he'll be able to tell you. Do you think it's actually related though coz it sounds like it might just be a cut or blister which happens to be in that region?

Yes, go see a doc! Expert medical advice can surely help.

Maybe for the meantime though you should just wear sandals/slippers instead of socks and shoes. I know people who've had ingrowns, and they were adviced to do that so that the *humid* environment of your feet in socks and shoes won't aggravate the inflammation/infection by encouraging bacteria growth.

Ingrowing toenails are way glamourous :p:

not to mention sexy.

It may be, upon closer inspection, that it's just an infection without the ingrowing toenail part, in which case it can be cured through antibiotics alone with no bloody operation, right?

On the upside, antibiotics tend to make me feel better generally... like they clear out all the little niggley stuff around my body or sometihng. I'm still gonna play football on sunday though, I can't miss my match...

unless your doctor tells you not to as you could make it worse.

Go and see a doctor immediately. I had an ingrowing toenail and I ignored it, hoping it would "go away". It didn't, it got worse and worse. My biggest mistake was not seeing a doctor immediately.
I know it won't go away, but in my experience it doesn't really get worse... it has its painful moments and then doesn't hurt.. and suddenly hurts again. It's strange. But the more I think about it the more I think it's just an infection...

you might just have to remove part of your toenail on the sides (not the whole toenail), so they don't touch you skin to the sides enough to be ingrown again... does that make sense?

I had mine removed twice, but the 2nd time they put some stuff on it so it didnt grow back, i have no big toenail on my left foot, but its fine and feels quite normal

why did they have to go so far as to remove the whole thing? I had it and what they did is remove pieces from the sides and put something in there so it would not grow back, but I have most of my toenail there, just slightly less of it

I dunno, i guess that you cant just stop half, i had half removed the first time
Not nice! My friend has one at the moment, although he's had it for about 4 months but just left it to get worse the idiot.

He complains about it loads and it bleeds quite alot and he can't play football amongst other things. Quite amusing to see him fuming at people who stand on his shoes in a club, hehe.

He finally went to the doctor and got told he'd have to have it removed, they don't grow back for almost a year as well!
I know all about the operation I've had it twice and the second time they cauterised it to preventi growing back but it did anyway

Got the same problem, been having it for the past few years. Although, i've been trying to postpone the operation for ages. Might have it done this summer. One thing which i was recommended to do was when u have a shower, just take a toothbrush (preferably not the same one u brush ur teeth with) and use it to give ur toe a quick scrub, mainly a long the sides between the toenail and skin. Mine still isn't 100% and still hurts a bit when i play football, but it stops the skin flaring up and is a lot less painful. You also get these sachets with a solution called Tisept i think which helps clear any bacteria and there's also a cream called Bactroban which pretty much does the same thing. On the surgery note, can anyone give me some advice? Is it really painful? My friend had it done and had it bandaged for the best part of 2 weeks. What are the chances of it coming back? And will i have a toenail afterwards or can i say goodbye to it for good?
Depending on how bad it is, Faiz, you may or may not have a nail left. The operation isn't too painful but for 2 injections either side of the toe which really do ache while the needle's in. Apart from that you might experience some soreness after the anaesthetic wears off but it's not so bad tbh.

My trick is to make sure I am VERY tired when i have an operation so when i lie down i shut my eyes and half go to sleep

Thanks for the advice. Keeping it clean is important, I know, but I think at the moment it would be too painful to scrub. I will put germaline/TCP on it though and a bandage when I play footie tomorra.

ive had too many of them on both feet. have one presently on my right big toe, the infection is "lovely"

if they keep recurring, you can ask for the nail to be permanently removed so you just have the nail bed and skin (when it returns) left, often they only remove half of the nail on the side where the trouble is and the remaining grows across. obviously it'll be softer and possibly more sensitive, so it might cause a bit of discomfort kicking a ball for example. it might not.

i may get this done when i finally get round to getting my current mess properly fixed. at the moment its a home-made damage limitation job plying the nail out from under the skin with nail clippers every few weeks. after a while it isnt sore anymore.
Have any females replied yet? Sounds so nasssty on a girl but you can't tell that I ever had it.

I had this on both my big toes. Not at the same though. They removed the sides of my right one first, and put sumthin on it so it wouldn't grow back, that nail still looks perfect, very pretty infact.

Then my left big toe started playing up, and again I had to have this one done, but this time in hosiptal instead of just the doctors. They removed the sides again and similarly applied a chemical to stop it from growing back. [the]

This left toe I was quite upset about though because the sides were quite far in relative to the one I had done previously! It looked horrible to me, my precious feet. But that was all yearsssss ago now.

The right toe, they did they only did the one side so now I slightly have it down the side of my right toe which they didn't do....

This is what I have to do sometimes, pain in the ass but no mother-fcuking way am I having my whole toenail removed.

The operation itself doesn't hurt. The weirdest thing is you can feel someone doing something; which happens to be a doctor ripping off part of your nail, yet you can't feel a thing apart from your foot jiggling about. Quite sereal really, especially being awake. But afterwards it doesn't hurt either, it is nothing compared to the pain of an ingrowing toenail though! :frown:

Its all to do with the way you cut your nails as well you know.
