what size did others use?
for my bronze expedition i got away with a 45 litre daysack, my silver i squoze everything into a 65... for bronze it dont need be bigger than 60 litres, depending on your age/size prolly a 50 would be good...
my dad has a 60 and he sez i can use that but (being the selfish person that i am ) i don't want to be the person with the big rucksack who has to carry everyone elses stuff!
lol, take your dad's 60L. If the rest of your group make you carry their stuff because 'yours is the biggest', then you certainly want to change groups. In Bronze, you can just about get by as individuals, but for Silver, there's NO WAY I could have done it without everyone else supporting each other.
50L is easily enough for Bronze, but if you're looking to go for Silver and Gold, an investment in a decent 60-70L sack might be worth it.
Make sure you don't buy a rubbish rucksack! I had a cheapish one for bronze, (and also silver training expedition). It wasn't very comfortable. In the end I ended up buying a £130 rucksack for the actual Silver expedition and Gold. The experience was just totally different, the better rucksack was far more comfortable. I wish I'd had the better one from the start, I would have enjoyed Bronze/Silver training so much more.
If you are worried about how much you will have to carry, make sure you get a rucksack with decent padding.
If your group try to give you more stuff to carry just because your bag is bigger, stand up for yourself! Carrying extra weight can make the expedition real hell.
Try and carry as much of the group food as you can (as opposed to other group stuff such as pots and pans, gas cyclinders etc)...that way your bag gets lighter every day (This strategy is most rewarding on Silver/Gold)
The way our group did it was everyone carries their own food. As for tents, 3 to a tent, and two tents. Each day we swapped what we carried, so one day somebody would carry the outer layer, the next day the inner, and the next day the ground sheet. As for cooking equipment and other stuff, just swap it round every day. Make sure nobody takes more than their fair share, it really does make it a lot harder.
