Offer Flexibility

They'll take scottish students with only an A in AH Music, I don't see how they can ask for anyhting else.

Also, if you have a successful appeal it might be worth contacting the college and asking if you should apply again or whether they can give you a deferred offer.

I know of someone who 'supposedly' missed their offer but on appeal the exam board admitted they'd made a mistake when processing results (she hadn't got a C but rather an A!!!!) but it was too late for the Uni to accept her that year (I don't think it was Oxbridge, but it was a top medical course so equally competitive) but they agreed to accept her the following year.

I already have 4 As at Advanced Higher including at A in Music - the subject I intend to study. However, I am sitting A level music during a gap year - it was a sort of condition that the specialist music school i am at set for me to be accepted. Oxford has asked that I get an A but I am a bit worried about this as it is a whole new exam system (not to mention the fact that my crazy school doesn't give me any exam-leave!) and I am being a bit too relaxed about it all. I was kind of hoping that they would still let me in if I didnt get an A as it seems a bit cheeky to have asked as I was basically a post-qualification applicant. What do you think? I s'pose it would be a bit shocking to not get an A in the subject I'm going to be studying...

The only issue will be time for coursework - There is quite a bit of composition aand I certainly wouldn't want to have to do it all in a year.

When the exams are over I'm going to make a file of evidence I can send away in the case of an appeal, and have that sitting in a desk at school so they can be ready at a moment's notice to appeal the SQA'a ass off for me!

I don't remember whether i heard this in an Oxford specific context or from the AT of another medical school.. but i heard that if you have exenuating circumstances of any kind (which presumably your file of evidence would detail?), them know now. so they can already take it into account when they receive your results early, hence less stress on the day & also it'll look like like you're making excuses post results.

as Hoofbeat mentioned, Medicine in particular seems to have had oodles of Open Offers this year, presumably reflecting the new more centralised admissions procedure.. so all you with offers work especially hard! i don't wnat to be childless again this year...sob.. :p:

Mmm pretty worried about it all. Perhaps a fake doctor's note explaining that a nervous breakdown or some new, bizzare illness hindered your exam performance might do the trick....

when would you intend on sending this to them? As I said in the other thread - They get your results (just grades, not UMS) about a week before you do so unless you knew you'd done particularly badly in one exam you would find it hard to fake. Anyway, I wish you all the beest of luck with getting your grades.

ok, here's my situation:
I may get AAA, but AAB looks more likely, with the B in English. If I get AAB, I'll get my Head of Year to write to Oxford and say:
A) I was the one of only 2 people to get an offer based on AH grades, and the other was BBC in the whole year
B) In english i wasn't taught for 2 months towards the end
C) I was heavily involved in the School Show, Yearbook, and Prom committees, i.e. I ran them all
D) My head of year, who is a language teacher, advised me to concentrate on my langs; they advised me to do this on my interview feedback too.
E) I've launched an appeal, and hopefully would be able to upgrade my results.

If I sent them this letter the day I get my results, do you think they would reject me, make me wait on the result of my appeal (which would take 2-4 weeks; the UCAS deadline for meeting your conditions is Aug 31st), or accept me?

Also, when do the english results come out? The scots ones are Aug 12, so I might have a bit of an advantage over you guys!! ...or not!

If you genuinely feel it may be a problem then get your head of year (or better still your headmaster/mistress) to write NOW. Leaving it til results day is too late....they'll have already made their mind up as they'll know your grades.

That's not really a good enough excuse I'm afraid

B) In english i wasn't taught for 2 months towards the end

If they're have been difficulties in arranging a teacher for you then they *may* look into this and take into consideration

C) I was heavily involved in the School Show, Yearbook, and Prom committees, i.e. I ran them all

"SO WHAT?" will be Oxford's view on that. In all honesty I know it's a lot of extra stuff, but YOU chose to do it and ultimately Oxford won't use that as an excuse for allowing your work to suffer....they don't want to risk you coming here and then because you take up a sport/society your work suffers. Such an excuse won't work when you get here and it won't work while you're trying to get here. Sorry :frown:

D) My head of year, who is a language teacher, advised me to concentrate on my langs; they advised me to do this on my interview feedback too.

Yes that's sensible, but at the same time your other subjects musn't suffer. Oxford will see this as "If you can't cope with the workload at school, you won't be able to cope here".

E) I've launched an appeal, and hopefully would be able to upgrade my results.

English results usually come out a week later (always on a Thursday) I believe. Although, everyone on here knows someone/someone's friend/their aunt's sister's dog/ who has made it into Oxford when they've slipped they're grades this is not common place. GENERALLY Oxford will only consider still taking you if you have extenuating circumstances: illness/family difficulties/problems at school (regarding no teacher for an extended period etc).

I know it seems really easy for all of us already here to say "work your backside off and just get those 3 A's" but we have ALL been in your position and worried like hell about not getting our grades (infact do a search for all the posts around a year ago and you'll see what a state we were in :p: !!!)...however, ultimately if you really want to go to Oxford (which you should do  ) then at the moment your exams are your priority. I know that revising is boring (god I'm supposed to be doing some right now!) and you probably can't see a light at the end of the tunnel but for the next few months just work your arse off so you don't have to keep worrying what to do if you miss your offer! If you ever get fed up of revising and start to think "i can't be bothered" just imagine how you'll feel on results day if you miss your oxford offer when you've come so far and got through the hardest obstacle...applying.

Good luck...AND GO DO SOME WORK NOW :p:

Good luck! The summer will be far more enjoyable this way...that's a good way to think of it.

Why are you sweating it so earlier??? Unless Scottish exams start well before ours you don't have a problem! Get stuck into your revision and you'll be fine...what have you missed in English?
Reply 32
I think Scottish exams do start much earlier than English ones. Besides, if you're panicking already about missing your offer, some work now won't hurt.
My exams start in 3 weeks, and I;ve not done very much revision.
Oh well, back to work I suppose... what youve said makes sense.
I was dreadfully paranoid about missing my offer... I got it, thank god, but I learned when I got here that 2 people had missed their offers for my subject at my college and weren't given places. Made me feel pretty bloody grateful that I was so lucky I got them, as even though I would have had exenuating circumstances I don't know if they were any better than the two candidates who missed out.

Moral of the story: Follow Hoofbeat's advice and work work work!!

but you have your dissertation to boost your mark. Come on 35+% there already.

Hmmm, my cambridge offer letter specifically stated that it 'might be possible' for them to 'relax' the offer conditions come exam results in august.

Sidney always say that, but don't take their word for it. Sometimes the college will take you if you miss your grades by a bit, and sometimes they'll stick you in the summer pool and you might be lucky enough to get fished out (this happened to a friend of mine) but often they will just say sorry and goodbye! - my advice is don't chance it: just work your arse off (and then you can come here and work your arse off some more)

thanks for the advice. i was afraid that was the answer.

I'm sure you'll get your grades so you won't need to worry  They do TRY to be accommodating but... :s:
I dropped a grade in one of the subjects they asked for, and was still given a place. Whether it was because I had a fourth A, or a fantastic interview, or a gap year, or a combination of above, I don't know. I wouldn't recommend it. The very tense few hours between results and phonecall are not worth it.
