How do u bay park???? Test in a few hours!!!

Hello,
my test is at 15:27 today and I am really NOT great with bay parking AT ALL! I did it three times, but I can't remember! My test centre has a bay park so I will be asked to do this.
When I did this with my instructor, i stopped the car a few metres before the bay park and then reversed slowly and then turned left. But when do I start turning the steering wheel? When i reach the first white line of my bay park????

I can't remember the exact distance but if you position the car correctly, you should go into full lock on steering as soon as the car starts to move back.

i think the point when you put full lock on is when the wing-mirror is in line with the far line of the space next to the space you want to park in

well ive been told to count from the outside line of the bay count that as 1 then count 3 lines and put it inline harfway of your front window and thats when the full lock starts... sorry i cant really explain it in words!
good luck!
ive got mine today to!

if you go 3 spaces before the gap you want to go in and aline the whiteline in the middle of your car/ nearer the wingmirror do a full turn the opposite way you wanna go iyswim? so you will go the right way , when you are facing the right way straighten up.
good luck

take it real slow, look all around the car and just judge it, gentle movements on the wheel - don't be afraid to straighten up if you need to   good luck!

fortunately at sunderland test centre they dont have bays
so i didnt have to do any bay parking
only downside to this is, i never got taught it either, so im pretty much screwed now iv passed my test (especially since i refuse to parallel park).
good luck anyway  dont panic too much. so long as you do the correct things, like observation and control, you should be ok

i don't get the thing about reference points. Would just looking into the bay and concentrating on reversing it properly do?

I think if you want to park in space 2 you put full lock on when your wingmirror is level with the very first line, but im not 100% sure, just judge it

Reply 9

you line it up with a certain point on your car and then do a full lock.
but it is DIFFERENT for all cars

You have a lesson before your test right? Practise then. Maybe you should have got them to show you more. It isn't too difficult, just take your time.
I was NEVER taught how to bay park and I got it on my own. Good luck for your test!

good luck...ive just back from my test.....but failed :frown: lol..

didn't fail on my bay park though...even though it was veeeery messy lol

it's different for every car so don't follow the instructions people are giving you for 'line up the white line with blah' in my instructors car i had to line it up wtih the gear stick in MY CAR which i did my latest test in (and passed btw and had to do a bay park so i know what i'm talking about) it made me land right on the line, and by that i mean the line was in teh middle of the car.

the way i did it was go 45 degrees angle to the bay you want to be in, so the arse of your car is lined up but at a 45 degree angle kind of thing, and then just reverse back, and use your intuition to turn the wheel how it needs to go so you can get in the bay

DON'T FORGET you ARE allowed to come back out and re adjust ONCE. they don't give you anything for it.

as long as all four WHEELS are in the box. you pass.

good luck OP :yy:

my instructor makes me do bay parking nearly every lesson...i cant believe you've only done it three times...doesnt sound anywhere near enough to me...????

it's fairly straight forward though.
for the car I learn in I reverse back slowly until the left door mirror sits on a white line, then put it into full lock and reverse back until i'm almost facing the front, then straighten up really quickly.
i hope you get to practise more before your test!!

my ex boyfriend wasn't even told that bay park was in the test. . .

he was told there were only three maneuvers, parallell park, turn in the road, reverse round a corner. it's only when i took a test and told him i got bay park in it that he even realised it was a maneuver.

and your method won't work in her car unless she drives the same car as you btw. . .

Ummm this rather depends on how far away you are from the cars either side when you start off....

You should go full lock once your real wheel just passes the corner of the car on the near side.

Tell us if you pass, OP! :p:

__________
SPACE 1
__________
SPACE 2
__________

This is irrelevant now but:

I was taught that to get into SPACE 2, you need to be about a fall car's length away from the slot, then you reverse until the steering wheel is in line with the very top line (top of SPACE 1). Then you apply full lock, turning the steering wheel anti-clockwise at a quick pace whilst creeping back, then straighten when you're in line, then reverse back into the slot and apply the foot brake, applying the hand brake afterwards and changing gear.

In reality, you might need to judge it a bit.

strange how some instructors don't do bay parking! did he have to do things like hill starts? ive had to do them..

oh yeah...it's awkward really..i was just trying to explain the method ive been taught. I guess you need to judge for yourself, depending on your car etc..

i don't remember, but he was really shocked when he found out i did a bay park and actually ARGUED wiht me saying it's not something i had to do? when i had just done it on the test? lol

yea i know, but i found when i tried the method i did in my instructors car (you line the gear stick with teh white line, full lock, will go into the third bay back) it didn't work on my car. i would end up with the line right down the middle :s-smilie:

the OP should have tried a few more times before attmepting the test :s-smilie:, although if you don't have to do it as an assessed maneuver you can just go in forwards or whatever lol.

i wonder how they did :eek3:
