There is only 500 shootings and a day and about 25,000 stabbings. I've been gunned down 25 times already this year.

Anyway back to seriousness I think Manchester is actually one of the safest cities in the UK. The city centre has a huge CCTV network (the most advanced in Europe). I have been out clubbing in Manchester almost 100 times and never witnessed any serious trouble.

I have also been through Moss Side at least 10,000 times and never seen any trouble at all.

If anybody tells you Manchester is rough they simply don't know what their talking about. Yes some parts of Manchester are rough, but it dosn't mean it all is.

That surpises me about mosside...maybe i've been misled, i recall seeing some documentary that said police cars refused to drive through there, when they did they got bricks through their windows, and that there was loads of gun crime......but then TV says that about glasgow, and i felt safe there

Thats a loaf of crap, I went to school in Moss Side, it was rough but it was perfectly safe to walk through. If Moss Side was that rough they wouldn't pay able to ask £170,000 for 1 bed appartment in a converted church which is in Moss Side.

Its no means the nicest part of Manchester but there are worse places. Moss Side gets an unfair reputation because there was riots there in 1981, things have changed dramaticaly since then.

The worst parts of Manchester are found towards the North East of the city where most students will never visit.
I am a student here and feel perfectly safe but its interesting to see that out of the 1051 ASBO's handed out, 608 have been in greater manchester.

I bet the majority are in the rougher council estates where most students will never venture though. There are a lot of yobs and scallies but they tend to stick to their own parts . Just avoid Market Street on a saturday though as they all come out then.

Also I think ABSO's were pioneered in Greater Manchester which may also suggest why a very high number of been handed out in Manchester.

Out of curiosity, I was wondering whether does break-ins into hostel & snatch-theft occurs frequently in Manchester?

The first question depends on the area but hotel break ins are very rare, theft in rougher areas hower may not be so rare. As for muggings it depends simply onthe area. There is some muggings but its no worse than anywhere else in the country. They are not common but they are not rare either.

I don't really know Manchester that well, but how about say around Oxford Road, Grosvenor Street Building?

It should be fine, there is loads of students around there nothing can really happen. if you ask the vast majority of students if they know anything crime that has happened to them you will be surprised about how few have been victims of crime.

I am not pretending there is no crime because there is, but as longs as you have common sense you should be fine.

I don't think so. Crime in Manchester is way above the UK average: (blue is manc crime, yellow is uk average crime)

But, as has been said, the student areas of the city are quite safe as they are well lit, covered by CCTV and are usually busy. As long as you don't walk through dodgy council estates at night alone you'll be fine, but remember there are some weirdos knocking about so be alert.

In that case all the stuff about drunks in the city centre at night is a load of crap because I haven't seen any of it.

Don't forget Greater Manchester is the second most dense city in the UK, of course there is going to be more crime than a remote village in Devon.

Also I am sure some parts of Manchester are extremely rough but a lot of rough areas are in the extreme suburbs such as Wyhthenshawe and Blackley, students can very easily avoid these areas.

Manchester is really safe. I have lived in or around Manchester for my entire life. A few years ago, due to the reputation certain areas of Manchester were getting (notibly Moss Side) Manchester City Council piled loads of money into making the streets safer. Now there is a vast CCTV network, lots of visible police and, with most student bars and clubs being locasted on or close to Oxford Road, it is usually really busy until the early hours of the morning, so less chance of any trouble occuring.

The only area i'd advise you to avoid at the memoment is Longsight, but that is a fair distance from all the student areas.

The same advice stands as for anywhere else; stick to busy streets, avoid walking alone at night etc.

Longsight though I admit is not the safest or nicest part of Manchester is heaven compared to some parts. I have a mate who lives in area where you get beaten up if you don't look like a local. Its 'propoh' rough.

Moss Side has never been that rough, its just subject to stupid amounts of media hype and it does have a lot of drug dealers living there. However the drug dealers don't harm innocent people.

I am not saying Moss Side is a nice area, its just not as bad as its made out to be. The University for example is just 5 minutes walk away from Moss Side, some parts of it are actualy in Moss Side (the dental hospital for example).
Manchester's not dangerous. Sure there are bits I wouldn't walk through on my own, but I'd be ok in Blackley or Longsight. Its just about being sensible.

There is a lot of people getting drunk on a friday and saturday but just steer clear of known trouble spots and there are loads of police.
Sadly a second car was broken into in the Cantab Court car park this weekend since I have been here that i know about and this has put a stop to me bringing my car up for the end of term from next weekend. A couple of lads were mugged a few metres from my window about a month ago too, running away shouting something about being in the Longsight crew. People forget that Longsight is only a 5 minute walk down Dickenson road from a lot of student buildings on Anson Rd.

I felt safe until recently here, especially with the frequent security patrols which are more reliable than the police but these few things ruin it for me.

Of course this is only a single person's views and shaped by 3 small events and I lived in a crime free area (pratically speaking) in Nottingham so maybe this is more normal.

Crime statistics are a load of bull, though. For example, if more police where added crime would appear to increase, as more criminals would be caught. However, the city does have it's fair share of crime (e.g. you may note that most shops have security people standing on large chairs, even pound shops and newsagents in the city centre), but so long as you aren't stupid you are more than likely to never experience anything untoward in your whole three years. It is also worth noting that the vast majority of violent crime is drug related.
I live in wythenshawe, which is seen as quite a rough part of manchester, and my college is in mosside, so everyday im in a rough part of manchester and ive never been mugged, or threatened or anything like that.

Ive seen fights and people robbing cars and all that stuff, but that happens in every big city, the main thing is ive grown up with it and now what to do and where to go and wat not to do. The biggest problem will be the start of the year when there are loads of students who are probably new to the city so the muggers will be out lookin for i.e the naive boy, new to the city, listenin to his i-pod etc. The main thing is be senseble and avoid places that look rough, so basically use ur common sense!

And as for crime, its happens everywhere!
