Plans for first week of university at Leeds

I am sooo excited about going away to university (obviously if I get the grades!) and have so many plans, ranging from making loads of new great friends to partying all the time, to joining a football team and becoming a member of some crazy clubs to enjoying the cities nightlife!

I don't really know anything about Freshers Week, so I don't really know what is supposed to happen, but I will certainly go out of my way to be friendly to people and try and make some cool new friends straight away!

Drinking games are fun, especially to get to know people a little better, as is hanging out with loads of people you don't really know finding out all sorts of interesting info about them.. it'll be so good!

What plans you got then? Woah - it's gonna kick ass!

Don't worry, I ensure you that you'll make friends at Leeds University cos everybody's outgoing and up for a laugh. I've just graduated from Leeds recently and I had the best time of my life. I made several friends, many of which are going to be friends for life. Make sure you get your face known in the first 2/3 weeks of term and try to accost as many people as you can (without acting like you're some sort of fruitloop  ). The great thing about Leeds Uni is that it's very good red brick uni with a great reputation with employers, yet it still manages to be very cool and has moved with the times unlike other red brick universities such as Durham and Bristol which I feel are stuck in the past. Like I said before the students at Leeds Uni are very cool and very outgoing. The main student area in Leeds is Headingley which is just like one big student village, you'll probably live here during your 2nd and 3rd years when you move out of halls. 70% of the population living in Headingley are students and I lived in a street which was full of students. Also, Otley Road which is the high street of Headingley has all the shops which a students needs and lots of great pubs where you ca drink in when doing the ''Otley Run'' which is a big pub crawl which the students do once in a while (or you can do it every weekend if your body can take it ) .

I hope this helps.

Hehe, so excited; that sounds fantastic! What accomodation would you recommend then? I'm after self catering with en-suite (only cos I don't fancy sharin' a bathroom), oh, and a data connection in the room (geek).
I've been thinkin Leodis recently, but obviously am coming to the Accom open day on which is on the 7th of next month..

Leeds looks brill

I'd recommend either Boddington Halls which is a bit of a distance from the uni but has a big, big party atmosphere. I'm not sure if there is a data connection in each room in Boddington but there is a big computer room in the halls of residence. Or you may like James Ballie Park which was built about 2 years ago so I think that data connection is avaliable in each room but I'm not 100% sure. For more info on accomodation contact the accomdation office.

What are the transport links to uni like to and from Boddington?

Do tell all, i'm so eager to find out!

Right, Freshers week.

The one thing you MUST do in Freshers week is register with the uni, otherwise your screwed!! You'll be sent all the information about how to register by your department after results day though so you don't need to worry about it just yet, just make sure you don't forget in the drunken haze!! Registration is also when you'll get to sign up for the sports teams, basically you queue for hours to get registered and then the only way out of the building is through the sports fair!! Every university sports club will have a stand here (and I mean EVERY one, including the Cheerleading squad, the sky diving club and the Ultimate Frisbee team!!) you just go and talk to the people at the stalls your interested and they'll try and persuade you to join their club and give you all the details. Most clubs will charge you a small joining fee as well, which is just to cover their insurance if anything happens.

You'll also be given a date and time to register with the Student Medical Practice and you'll be offered any jabs you need (usually meningitis and flu jabs, but you don't have to have them)

You'll also have various meet and greets with you department in the first week, you should probably go to these and meet some of your new course mates. We had a test in maths, but I don't think anyother department is that mean!! Its basically picking up your registration information and getting to know everyone. Some departments organise social events for freshers week (like bbq's, nights out, "parties" with cases of cheap wine!!)

Try and get to the Advertisers fair in the first couple of days of freshers week, thats where all the free stuff is handed out!! Its also handy if your not sorted out with a bank yet, because they'll all be there offering you special offers etc. The police are also there so mark your property and companies like NTL if your in a student house and want broadband/phone/tv!! But generally just go for the free pens!!

In the second half of the week the Advertisers fair is replaced by the Societies fair, which is worth a look too. Its similar to the sports fair, with societies having stalls and you speak to the people who interest you, it might be worth going on both days because I think there are different societies on each day. Anyway, this is where you sign up for things like LGBT Soc, the various performing societies, Rock Soc, Jewish Society, anything you can think of really!! If you have any interests go and have a chat with the people there and make even more new friends!!

The uni organises a variety of activities for freshers week, but to be perfectly honest they're not that great, personally I reckon your better off getting to know your way round the clubs in town, but it really depends what your new friends want to do. I'd recommend a trip to the site bar (if your halls has one) on the first night to get to know the people your going to be living with, make sure you take some cash for the first night, especially if your living some where a bit out of the way (like CD) so you can go and get a couple of drinks with your new friends. Um, what you do and where you go really depends on your own preferences though!!

Anyway, I can't think of anything else at the minute, but if theres anything I've missed out feel free to ask!!

The transport links are good from the uni to Boddington and vice versa. Again, ask the uni for further details.

Warning....very shallow post.....lol
If *fingers crossed* I get into Leeds, I shall be spending much of the first week having an elongated celebration of my 19th birthday (on the 22nd) and everyone is very muchly invited for drinkage.....
Aside from that, i shall be settling myself in at the uni and finding out where all of my friends are living (about 6 of my friends+my boyfriend have put it down as their firm choice, and it's not even a local uni.....curious - but brilliant!!)......and making lots of new friends also.....
No doubt I will join lots of silly clubs, including LUST (Leeds University Society of Theologians)......
Really really hope I get in now! It's going to be sooooo much fun!

Um, the days are spent recovering from the night before, and sorting everything out for your course (like registering, attending welcome meetings etc) while freshers week is all about the drinking you need to make sure you remember to actually sign up with the uni!!

I'd say check out what's going on in town. We went to the Union for most of freshers week - intro party and freshers ball, but i'm sure there's better stuff goin on in town. That's where I'll be heading anyway  :p:

Ho ho, what do you do during the day? Stand in queues thats what you'll do!
Your queuing for ages and it can be quite confusing because you have to go in different queues depending on your status with your loan or whatever and also you have to register with all your electives before you can formally register. Having said that, I didn't mind queuing nearly as much as I thought I would because it's a great way to meet people, you just randomly chat to people stood next to you in the queue

Reply 19

All theses queues, registering, chosing electives, societies, tradefairs etc it all sounds quite stressful, no wonder all the students want to go out on the pi$$ after a day full of that! I am looking forward to making lots of new friends, I only know 1 person who has an offer at leeds, and to be brutally honest i don't like her ha-ha. Are ther any cash points on the accom sites?, or will i have to catch a bus into town/headingly or seomthing to get moneys? (if i get oxley ill be almost as far away as bod)
