Sexual behaviours judged throughout time.

I am just wondering why in today's society so many people look down on the sexual behaviours of others. 'Sleeping around' is sinful and porn has 'gone too far'. Many people describe today's younger generations as 'pushing the limits of social acceptability'.

Yet from a very early stage humans have never really behaved any differently, from the ancient Greeks who famously engaged in 'royal orgies' to around 200 years ago when it was seen as acceptable for a man to have 1 wife and other 'mistresses' it wasn't looked down upon. Porn really invented itself within the Victorian era, and talk of sex in such an apparently 'inappropriate' fashion is written in old Shakespearean texts.

So why does society judge itself and blame others, predominantly the new generation, for its sexual behaviours when the likelihood is that they haven't changed over 1000's of years?

Any opinions guys/girls? x

I just think its become more openly accepted nowadays and not so much of a taboo subject..
Of course the same thing happened hundreds of years ago, but today its almost like a badge of honour for some people being alot more open about their sexuality and exploits.

I get this but before (back in time) I dont think it was such a 'badge of honour' as you put it. Perhaps where people are going wrong is being so proud? Hmmmm strange question really. x

It was also acceptable for grown men to sleep with little boys as it was seen as highest form of love or something.

I think that now people are more informed about different things because of the media. Now people can say what they want about different topics and someone will probably listen to them, just as you are listening to me.

What's changed? Women's rights.

That's why porn is bad, men should only have one lover, etc

That's a really interesting point actually, maybe the positive womans rights movement also effected womans self expression in this way???

Well they're not longer seen as property of men (in non [extreme] muslim parts of the world anyway). So they of course have the ability to be freeer (must be spelt wrong!), and able to express themselves more

And of course that is a great and positive thing
We live in a sexually repressed society full of prudes and epic fails.

I would say it's becoming somewhat more accepted, despite the stigmas attached to people who regularly watch porn or are promiscuous in their behaviour.

As psychologists and neuroscientists unlock more secrets about the benefits of being sexually active and open, I believe society is starting to realise that so long the sex is safe, consensual, and fun, it's a very beneficial thing to do.

History doesn't necessarily seem to be repeating itself, although I find polygamy (multiple wives) to be the strangest of sexual evolution - again, as you guys mentioned though, women's rights could eliminate this.

Porn isn't bad, porn centered around humiliating and degrading women is bad. So quite a bit of porn is fine, but and awful lot with all the throat-fcuking, hard ass banging, face slapping and suchlike going on isn't good. Or anything with Paul Little or Khan Tuson.
It is, pretty much in totality, because of religion, which galvanised masses to act and behave in a certain way. In ancient Greece, they were pre- Christianity. That hits, and suddenly you are a whore if you sleep around, are a sinner if you have same-sex relationships, etc etc etc.

People should realise, when you call a girl a slag, you are backwards because you haven't shaken off old religious shackles that try to dictate the proper rules of behaviour to this day, despite bearing little relevance ot the modern world.

Christian morality. People still cling to it. It;s the trace of Christian morality embedded within the psyche; within our cultural values. We laugh about how silly we are and make jokes about each others private parts. This has happened because of the way our ancestors believed that sex was sinfull, dirty, even demonic when outside of wedlock.

Friedrich Nietzsche believed that those who have rejected the Christian religion still cling to it's moral system. He thought that if Christianity is rejected then so should the moral system be rejected.

If they liked that sort of sex is it still bad? If it was men being humiliated would you call that bad? If other women enjoyed watching porn with women being humiliated because they were into that sort of thing would you consider that bad?

Why judge others sexual desires when it is entirely consensual?

There are effects of the act that "consent" doesn't account for. If I go and consent to watching degrading porn, that affects my conception of sex and affects future relationships I might have, how I perceive women etc. So there are negative effects outside of the "circle of consent" that haven't been considered.
