BA Product Design at CSM

I got an offer for the above course and I am really excited about going, but does anyone know something I should know before making a final decision? How is the atmosphere, halls, staff? just anything you might know  also, anyone else going?

Hey, I got an offer too  , but I haven't decided where I'm going yet!

I have talked to some of the people on the course and from central saint martins, visited the place and heard a lot about it. So I'll share my views :yep: .

The atmosphere is wonderful. A big studio of many students working. The class size is around 85 though, so it is big! I suspect you would get less tutor time because of this.

The staff are industry practitioners, so again the advantages are that they are relevant and know what they are teaching. I guess the downside is they can be busy with their own work.

The course seems to have an international reputation (like CSM itself) and seems very much on the creative side, but I do sometimes question the final projects, for example, I preferred the work coming out of northumbria. Also the course does not seem to do any exchanges with other schools - one thing that does put me off.

^ All of that though is my opinion though. Where else have you applied  ?

I also applied to UCL Italian and Design and got an offer, also to Goldsmiths but they seem to have lost my portfolio :/

Actually, I looked up exchanges - CSM seems to have an established Erasmus connection with the Milan polytechnic for Product Design, that's a very big plus for me as Italian was what I went for at UCL.

Do you have any other options?

 oo well done! Lost your portfolio?? thats terrible!

Where did it say they have a link with Milan? I only question it, because I went to an open day in january and the course leader said they stopped doing exchange programs because they apparently didn't get much out of it and it they said no course was similar to theirs and the students got treated badly.

Do you think you will go to CSM? As for me, I probably will go to the Glasgow School of Art, they also an exchange with Milan polytechnic (I think!). I'm from london so something different would be great. I'm really considering Northumbria and Central Saint Martins though, as well as Dundee (because their course seems really relevant to what I want to go into).

What do you think of the CSM product design course?

I found the exchange here: arts.ac.uk/erasmus, it might be outdated though, I emailed them today so I might know more.

I really think I'll go, because I liked the work I saw and the tutors at the interview seemed nice and professional. Besides, it's one of the top design schools and I wanna go into product design so it's almost perfect. I'm only afraid they don't invest as much in product design as they are more fashion oriented, that's what I heard but not from a student there so it's not that much of a concern.

I'm from Poland, so London will be new for me and i'm VERY excited  what courses would you do at glasgow and dundee?

Cool, tell me what the answer is when they reply! Thanks.

It's definitely a great choice! The work is great, teaching will probably be some of the best for product design. I'm sure they will invest a lot into it, although famous for fashion, they are known for product design, so I wouldn't be worried about it.

 I've been to Poland, really liked it there! I'm sure you'll love it here as well though, the building of CSM has got a great feel to it, don't you agree?

And Product Design at both glasgow and dundee, not totally made my mind up though! Glasgow's is very conceptual and looking towards social side of things, Dundee's looked at more technology based products. What I liked at CSM is the course looks quite broad and looks at a lot of aspects.

exactly, the goldsmith course was engineering focused, so i dont know if i would want to go there, after all it is very early to limit yourself to one very specific area, so i'd like to keep it broad  i'm interested in the social aspects, though, i think you should really look into that, i think it might become more of an issue in the future.

i love the CSM building! it gives you the feeling of an art school  and i do love london, i'm very much of a big-city-person. what about the schools in scotland, is the approach/method any different than in england?

I think the schools in Scotland are similar. There are some differences, such as class size and approach. At Glasgow School of Art the class size for Product Design is around 20-25. Also the Scottish courses are 4 years, so their first year (from what I can gather) seems like a foundation, but in Product Design.

Yeah, the social aspect I guess is interesting, I just wish Glasgow's course was as broad as CSMs! Did CSM reply to your email by the way?

hi, Ive been to the course in 2006. I did about 6 months b4 I changed the course.
There were too many students and the tutors are very busy indeed with their own work. Its pretty self guided. There are many foreign students who dont mix and cant speak english but are very talented. The facilities are well dated and when i joined they had a brand new cnc machine but noone that could operate it. All in all i decided to go to goldsmith after doing another 6 months in the spatial design course at csm. If you are are conceptual thinker and can work by your self its a good place. there is a lot of competition going on all the time so its full on.
hope this helps, ciao

Hi Rosa,

I have just found your post, I have an offer from CSM to start from this September.
I'm really excited, however as you have probably completed the course by now...do you think we could exchange emails so you could tell me the reality I should expect ?
I would be very grateful...
