Kettles and toasters

I know we're not allowed to have kettle and toasters in our on campus rooms but I was wondering whether there are any rule breakers out there  I would love to have a kettle in my room but I am worried about smoke alarms/power surges.

Do you have a kettle/toaster/fridge etc in your room? Have you had any problems?

I don't personally do it, but I know of people who do and they haven't had any problems. So yeah, you're not supposed to do it, but it's unlikely that you'll have anything done against you. If you want to be extra cautious, you could just put the kettle in your closet or something when you're not using it. xD

Im not really worried about them catching me with a kettle (thats sounds wrong :p: )- they'll probably just conviscate it. I'm more concered with having the whole building evacuated because I've set off the fire alarm or turned off the electricity :p:

dont worry, unless you have an ******** of a cleaner
though quite why you would want one when the kitchen is within about 4 or 5 doors one way or t'other???

I'm in westwood so I share a kitchen with 20 or so people. When there is a rowdy kitchen party going on I feel like a bit of a dweeb going to the kitchen in my pjs to make a cuppa.

There were a few kettles in our Rootes corridor, and a couple of mini-fridges as well. Really depends what your cleaner is like - ours didn't care in the slightest.

I wouldn't worry about the electricity thing. I once blew the electric to my room and some of the other rooms in rootes when I plugged in my hairdryer. To fix it all I had to do was pop down to the maintainence room and they switched it back again, so even if you did it wouldn't matter. Setting the smoke alarm off is another matter that would get you in trouble so I'd avoid toasters to be honest.

This definitely. I'd say it's not unlikely that burnt toast will set off the alarm in your room - having the wardens discover that everyone was evacuated because of someone illegally using a toaster in their own room would go down very badly indeed.

be careful though cos one of my flatmates got kicked out of 1st year accomodation for having a kettle and an iron. Many get away with it though

My cleaner would go ******* if we had any sort of kitchen or kettle in our room. It makes me sad, she's the bane of so much of my student life right now. If I had a cooler cleaner, I'd definately consider getting a mini fridge in my room - fridge space is so stupidly tight in Heronbank.

Although one girl in our flat took the kettle into her room all day. We were so shocked by it that nobody said anything, and when she brought it back it stopped working. Sad times!
