J'ai joué au foot.
J'y ai joué.

Je suis allé en France.
J'y suis allé.

So after the pronoun and before the auxiliary.

Yep, after the subject of the sentence, and before the auxiliary verb (être/avoir) in all of the compound tenses. So it's the same for the pluperfect, conditional perfect, future perfect etc.

what about if you need to make it negative?
I need to write 'they did not stay there'.. would that be 'ils n'ont pas y resté' ?
Thank you

Ils n'y sont pas restés

As a general rule negatives will enclose object pronouns and adverbial pronouns (y and en)

Il n'a pas bu du café

Il n'en a pas bu

Il ne déteste pas John

Il ne le déteste pas

There should be an e. The sentence is incorrect.

Merci beaucoup. I believe this was on Duolingo... but can't quite remember as I just made a note and I hop around the websites.
