General Studies - the UberThread:D

Hiya,

I'm in year 13, and currently doing AS general studies (well, being forced to - school make us) and am considering taking the A2 exams as well (AQA General Studies A).
I got A* for GCSE French (didnt do it at AS/A2), so I'm not too concerned about the foreign language bit, I'll just have to do some quick revision.
As I understand it, about half of it is multiple-choice, and the other half essay writing?

Has anyone done it, or have any comments?
I'm just wondering how much revision I'd have to do. I don't think I'd have to do any at all really (I'm doing physics, maths + geog at A2). From me reading the specification, the AS Unit 1 doesn't seem to pose a problem, I've done AS Unit 2 (science/maths), getting 100 UMS. Unit 3 is a slightly trickier one, but I don't see any major problems. Unit 4/5 seem ok, unit 6 is mainly based on opinions, which again, I'm happy with.
I don't see that I need to do much revision for it?

But, more to the point, is it worth it?
I have a offer of BCC from Nottingham, whilst they don't take it as my third A-Level (two of them need to be physics/maths), I'm thinking it might help if I dropped a grade or something, if I was to get A/B in GS.
Plus it would be nice to say "I have 4 A-levels" instead of 3. :p:

Any opinions?

Thanks :tsr:

You may as well go for it. The only time it takes is the time that you used when sitting the examination. If you're well prepared for your other exams then I don't see how it can hurt.
Go for it. Even if it's not included in your offer, 4 A-levels has to be better than 3, and some universities will take it into consideration if you don't quite get the grades. As long as it doesn't interfere with your other subjects, what do you have to lose?
It's up to you really. Not many universities count GS for the offers. In my school, you have to do it up to A2 if you get a grade C or above. If you are like my school, I guess you have to take it. Nevertheless, some uni's accept GS in a place of one of the A-levels. This is what my teacher told me.
NO!

Ask yourself. What is the point. The vast majority of Uni's don't value it at all and state they don't want it in offers... and you could be doing more useful things with your time in college.

Seriously it's like beating a dead horse.

I don't know what you got for AS but say you got an A, and then you get a C or D for A-level. That's one very possible scenario. That'd look **** wouldn't it really.

I'm going to ask if I can drop General Studies because it's terrible, I'm predicted A's in Maths, Further Maths & Computing so getting <A in General Studies would look bad.

take it if you are applying to a uni that accepts it
don't take it if you want to free up your time/ don't enjoy it

from the results you mentioned and the fact you say you're pretty happy with it, it definitely won't do you any harm in taking it to A2 level.

You can drop GS if you want. In my school though, if you get a grade C or above, you have to continue. :frown:

It depends but I've found AS General Studies this year (it might be GCSE actually) incredibly boring and useless. We do Key Skills as well, which is also a waste of time and not accepted by most top universities. I'd rather spend the time improving my performance in other subjects.

A pile of crap.

A subject that covers things like english, government, maths, and science. You can't prepare for this exam.
General studies is without a doubt the biggest waste of time ever. I have been to 3 doubles periods of it since Sept, and HAVE to do the exams next month because my school ignored all my protesting and have entered me for it. I am doing 5 AS Levels not inc. GS - and they're all pretty hardcore. I need free lessons to get away from it, and more importantly do extra work!
I need 3 As next year. To be honest, I'd much rather get the grades I need than say, well I got 3 As and a B but one A was in GS. How lame?!

After the D??!! I got in january I bought a letts revision guide :p: and we do past papers now in class, hopefully that'll make a least *some* difference I think.

I hate it but I don't want a bad grade

Ha i'd laugh if i got like 300/300 like some people on here

People in GS class do past papers mostly. Sometimes we talk about issues in the world and stuff like that.

What kind of stuff is in the revision guide? :p:

Ha it's like a novel really, *flicking through it*
5 pages on "Television - 'the box in the corner" :s:
'morality and science' :albertein
a section on ' major faiths in the uk' :five:
Political processes & goals :deal:

and so on...

Most of it isn't even necessary. If I took out what I did need it'd be struggling to meet 2 pages.
It's got all the other syllabuses in it though as well. :withstupi

Sounds like boring stuff, lol. Any actual exam questions in the book?

I'm sure you would do fine in A2 without the study guide, as you can't really study for it. You might want to study back the math stuff though (i.e. forumlas).
It is as I think Stratomaster said "a pile of crap". Like Gonnabavet, I've only been to a few tutor periods (where we study it), when we're told beforehand that what the tutor period's going to be used for.
I personally feel the lessons are a complete waste of time, except maybe skimming through past papers now and then, hense why I don't often attend them. However I do believe that the exams may be worth attending, since thats all General studies is, the exams. No prepaing needed, no worrying etc, just sit them and do them.
I do hate the amount of time they give each exam tho, They are way to long for how easy the subject is. 1h 30mins for them each(I think) and theres three of them, and at least two are usually on the same day/time slot as each other, you have to do them straight after, so you have 3 hours where your thinking you could be doing something else, since the exams can be finished in 30 mins max.
But other than that its grade that you've done almost zero work for during the year, you may as well sit the exam.

It does have questions at the end of each section.. but they're a lot harder than any exam questions i've seen so i'm not sure if they're real or not.

I wasn't planning on doing A2 though because I don't think the College expects anyone too and my dad strongly advises me not to do it.. he's a careers advisor btw :p:

My options are still open though, I don't dismiss it but is there really any point? :s-smilie:
