Can I still do a Degree in Pharmacy?

Hey Guys,

Well I didn't do Double Science at GCSE and only got a B in GCSE Science :s-smilie:. I wish I had done Double Science now, no one told me you need it to do a science at college :frown:.

I do 4AS-levels in Economics,Maths,Politics and Philosophy. I was looking at a Pharmacy degree spec and it looks quite interesting and enjoyble to me. Is there a way of still gaining a degree in Pharmacy with my A-level choices?

Thanks

I think it may put you at a disadvantage, but getting really good grades in all your subjects then picking up an extra AS next year may help you

Don't you need chemistry at A-level for pharmacy???

Reply 3

You could do a foundation year but because you have no science at A-Level you couldn't go straight into a pharmacy degree.

Unfortunately, pretty much every school of Pharmacy asks for chemistry at A-Level as a pre-requisiste at least. Biology and Maths adds flavour, but as far as I'm aware, without chemistry, you won't be able to apply for Pharmacy next year without an extra year.

I wouldn't mind doing a foundation year. Is it competitive for a Foundation Year and then 4Years of Pharmacy at Uni of Manchester or Cardiff?

Thanks

Chemistry and Biology at A-level mate. You wont get a pharmacy degree with those subjects. They're not related at all lol.

You'd have to ask the universities, I'm afraid. I'm not sure how competitive pharmacy foundation years are and I think only a few uni's actually do them.

Plus, I think you have to graduate with the equivalent of a 2:1 in the foundation year to continue.

I am capable of that I think..gaining the 2:1 on a Foundation Year. I like the course content to be honest at various universities offering Pharmacy. Anything else I should take note off?

Nothing I can think of at the moment. However, you should ask in advance the uni's that DO do the foundation year courses what they'll be expecting of you etc.

Also, you might want to get some work experience under your belt to give you that edge over the other foundation year people.

Ive emailed Cardiff just about the situation and if they would make me an offer.

Manchester only have about 20 places according to their website. Don't know about Cardiff although Cardiff turned me down flat for the foundation year with 3 years of work experience, related AS Levels, the right GCSEs and an undergraduate certificate in natural sciences so I'm going to be big-headed and say it's going to be quite competitive. At both Kingston and Keele, you need to get 70% to pass the foundation year-Keele, no module can be below 70%! It's a bit scary!

You've probably already seen these but they may answer some of your questions:

Manchester Pharmacy with Foundation year: http://www.manchester.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/search2010/atoz/course/?code=07958

Nottingham Pharmacy with preliminary year: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/pharmacy/undergraduates/courselist.php?code=019836&page_var=c_det (from memory of the conversation I had with the admissions tutor, they only have 8 places for UK students)

i think that's the problem the course is meant for people without related a levels to gain you access to a normal pharmacy course. so related a/ass levels are actually a disadvantage to the 5 year course in a way.

I believe that kings also has a 5 year MPharm course with a foundation year thrown in...try that!

Hey, I have AAAB at AS level in unrelated AS subjects, what do you think my chances would be of securing a place at Cardiff?
