Trauma Doing GCSE OPtions early.....

I am choosing my GCSE options this week.

I have been told I need to choose one language, one humanities and one creative - we are doing them a year early and I'm in year 8 at the moment, so we are only choosing 3 at the moment.

I don't want to do a language, prefering to take 2 creative,
so my choices would be Geography, Textiles and Art.

Long term I want to do something along the lines of either architecture or fashion design.

My language options are Spanish and German, and I don't like either really, whereas I'm really good at creative stuff (even if I do say so myself!.... and actually so do my teachers!).

Do others think I will loose out later by not doing the language now?

My theory is that I can always pick up a language later if needs be. But school are pretty adamant. (My parents actually back me!)

What do others think?

Lots of employers and universities like languages (you've probably heard this all before!), so from that respect it would be a good idea. I'm doing two (French and Spanish). Languages aren't that difficult to GCSE and as long you learn it as you go there isn't huge amounts of revision to do, like in Maths, for instance. Also there isn't any coursework on my exam boards.

i've also heard that Textiles especially invovlves a lot of coursework and can get quite stressful at times. but if you love it that shouldn't be a problem. If you want to do the two creative subjects though, go for it, but just bear in mind that modern langauges are becoming increasingly important and that people who do them are at an advantage, even if it's just to gcse level.
It should be up to you rather than your school which subjects you take- I have experience of being forced to take GCSEs I hated, so I know how you feel. If you really don't want to do a language and you don't think it would be of any benefit to you, stick with your original choices. As you said, languages will always be something you can pick up later on if you need to. However, at least consider taking language because they're very valuable, and textiles and art are pretty narrow choices since they're so similar. If you're interested in fashion design, maybe do textiles and Spanish, since that would be better than German as far as fashion goes. It's worth remembering that you're only in Year 8, so it's very likely that you'll change your mind on careers at least once, and having a broader range of subjects will be more useful to you if that happens.

so... you can choose do a language now, or leave it 'til later?

as people always say, you learn langauges easier the younger you are, so maybe it'd be better to do one early?

pretty much everyone does some kind of language at gcse, so you really should do one...

too many creative courseworky subjects can be a pain too. i decided to do art for gcse since i thought i was good at it in the lower school, and it would be easy. oh, how wrong i was:frown:

Well at the start of year 10 I was adamant that I didn't want to do French (Languages were optional at my school) however the school talked me into it (Thank Goodness!) and now i'm taking it to A level and I really like languages.
Some Unis still wont accept people without a language GCSE, so you might want to check that out.
My two best friends both took art and textiles and found it rather stressful becuase of all the coursework, so you might want to think about how much work you want to do threre
My advice is make your own decision, you can pick up a language later (though it is supposedly quite hard)
Its our decision about your choices not your school....they done it to me and now i'm stuck with crap GCSE's which i don't like but I've had to do.... but good luck with your decisions  xoxo
