Manchester being one of the largest unis in the UK and the course I'm applying to is supposed to be one of the largest aswell - makes me worry. At first I thought 'great lots of people to mingle with, I'll defo make lots of friends' but then I thought 'well I wont be living in halls, and it seems like most people make their friends through halls so will already have their own friendship circle. I wont bump into acquaintances in the course because its so big and yeah, everybody will doing their own thing :frown:'
But I guess if I dont make any friends, I can focus on my studies and excel in them?

That bit at the end if true to an extent I suppose. Though what accommodation have you applied for? (coz if you're living in an apartment, and not halls, you'd have a pretty close knit group of mates I guess?)

I'm not applying for any accom - I'm staying at home and commuting (about 45 mins train journey) So thats why friend-making is a bit of an issue for me because most people seem to make friends with the people in their accom and because the econ course is so big I doubt I will make close friends. I was going to apply for halls but my parents want me to stay at home =/

Would you then say that you think Oak House is the best accommodation or are there others that you like more (maybe City campus)? Is it as loud as Owens Park, i.e. can you get any work done?

But that's what uni's about, being away from home and everything else!!

Never mind, it's a shame that, but I reckon you'll be just fine! Considering I'm doin PPE, I'll probably bump into you at some point in econs (though just remember to hold up a big banner saying "oi mate, i'm jabed786!") x

Personally on price, location, social life etc, I think Oak House is the best (but then I would!:p: )

It's busy but yes, you can certainly get work done if you are so inclined!

I wouldn't recommend Owens Park (especially the tower) because a lot of my friends there get sick of it (catered and living on corridors) and spend half the time in our flat! Nevertheless the social life and location are still great.

You will be fine! University is for everyone- shy, loud- whatever. Even though it sounds cliche there are so many different ppl at uni (esp at a huge one like man uni) that you are bound to find people you have things you have things in common with. Also I was shy when I first started but you'll find that over time university will bring you out of your shell too. Don't worry- and remember everyone's experiences are different this is only a v.small proportion of Man Uni students' opinions.

I kinda know how you feel since I'm quite shy too and I worry about fitting in at uni etc.

hahah, wow, thanks, I chose oak house before reading this and narrowly avoided choosing owen's park, I feel so comforted now!

Do you meet lots of people through your accommodation? I thought that, perhaps if it wasn't catered, then you may not meet other people in your block?

What course are you doing out of interest?

Actually self-catered works really well since we live in flats of 8 with a kitchen so we automatically get together and make friends. So you have the mates in your flat, the flat next door, the flats downstairs etc. I promise it's very sociable! I'm doing Linguistics (and that's good too!)

Sweeet, thanks!

I'm doing English Lit

How are the nights out? Do you generally go to town or stay in Fallowfield? anddd are you in any societies? Sorry for the interrogation!

Well nights out are plentiful and varied, I'd say I go to town half the time and stay in Fallowfield half the time, but sometimes we do both (a Baa Bar/ Font/ 5th Ave night out is not unheard of!) As it's Manchester, there's loads to do every night if you feel like it, and being in Fallowfield means you can just hop on the bus that goes past the gate and get straight to Piccadilly.
I'm not a very active society member I'm afraid- I go to the odd Indie soc night or Linguistics social (Eng Lit probably has good ones as it's a popular subject). We had the LEL ball on Thursday at the Hilton which was great, and if you like you fancy it you can stuff your social calendar with Soc nights.

Sorry this reads a bit like a brochure, but it really is that good here! Feel free to PM if you have any more questions!

No, it's not hard. I'm in Oak House, too, and it's a really sociable hall.

I also hardly ever fail to bump into someone I know when I'm on campus. It seems big, but it's really not so huge that you wont see people you know about.

English Lit has the worst society ever! We don't even have hoodies, the most basic ingredient for a society! And the socials are rare, and when they do happen they're ****. English Lit is the most anti-social degree imaginable. Er, don't worry though, any prospective Lit students. You can still make friends, just not through the "society".

It depends on what type of person you are, but i do believe it is quite difficult because it is so large.

If you're the type of person who will talk to anyone, and goes out every week like everyone else then you will enjoy it. If you have any sense of individuality at all, you'll probably find it more difficult.

I've found it quite difficult in my first year because i don't want to go out and do the same thing as everyone else every week. Good luck anyway. P.S in fallowfield you won't get any work done! and i've had found that even though i don't socialise with the noisy people!!

That's a bit unfair. I go out pretty regularly and I'm happy to talk to lots of people, but I don't think that makes me a sheep.
