Lithium tablets

What kind of psychological condition would you be prescribed lithium for? One of my dad's friends whose life he is trying to sort out told him that he went to a psychiatrist and was prescribed lithium, and couldn't remember the diagnosis  My dad asked me thinking i would know but i'm clueless...
Anyone? thanks x

Nice and sensitive I see!!
I am pretty sure it's used to treat something called bipolar disorder. I read an article a couple of years back about a sufferer and definitely remember lithium being mentioned.

Thankyou  That sounds about right, apparently all he could remember the psychiatrist saying was something about hypermania, lol. Maybe he is being treated for depression...

Lithium is used generally for the more severe depression or mania.

I think bipolar disorder is more where you have mania...depression is just feeling down pretty much all the time, mania is where you swing from high to low :frown: I think anyway...

He constantly talks about himself, the past, who he knows, his new cars, how much he is earning etc and can't talk about anything else. He is an alcoholic but honestly does not believe that port is a form of alcohol, so drinks 2 bottles a day whilst in his care on the way to and home from work. He is about to lose his job, and facing a ban for drink driving.
He just finished his wife of 27 years at their anniversary party in front of 600 people, basically everyone they have ever known. He just gave her 27 roses and divorce papers and said goodbye. He is either seriously twisted/very ill or both... :frown: His kids hate him too, so apart from my dad he has noone.

Well maybe if he is an alcoholic the doctors should try and get him off that rather than just perscribing lithium. It makes me so angry, Doctors just think that anti-depressants are the cure for any mood disorder  Maybe he is psychotic because of the alcohol? I'm not sure.

Maybe the psychosis led to the alcohol? Maybe the two are unrelated? I am sure there is more to the story and that the psychiatrist whould have done a thorough evaluation before prescribing lithium...

Possibly, my dad is trying to find out what drove him ot the bottle (he has known him for 30 years or so) and he kind of thinks it has something to do with losing his mother (who he was very close to) when he was out of the country trying to save his business. My dad thinks he never had chance to grieve and stuff :frown:

Its more than likely that a Doctor would have perscribed it. And you're right there is probably more to the story! There always is with mental health problems.

Could have been. Mental health problems are so complicated though. One of my friends mums has severe depression, so bad that she has had ECT (if you know what that is, the point is its not perscribed that much), and no one knows what caused it. Aparently life just got too much for her one day. I don't know. One moment she'll be fine, next moment she be upset and crying.

The psychiatrist is a family friend of his, so not just any doctor so he knows the patient quite well....
