I got Faraday Hall, have not heard anything bad so all is well I guess.

Also to all the people that will be living in accommodation.
Who's bringing a TV? if so, what size?
My room at Faraday seems to be spacious enough for my TV, which is a 40". But I'm not sure whether I should bring it or not.:erm:

Quite frankly a 40" TV in a Faraday room would be utterly ridiculous. Get a smaller one.

Forget the horror stories about Mill hall..yes its not as nice as the other en-suite halls but all the other halls are noisy. My sister said that it was really sociable in there because of the way its laid out. I think you should go there and experience it for yourself.

hi =D i am really confused, you know its a corridor layout does this mean anyone on your floor can walk in and out and even into your kitchen :s-smilie: im sooo confused! ahhh.
thanks for the postiveness  xxxxxxxxxx

Hi I'll ask my sister tomorrow and let you know okay.

Nothing you do about it mate!
u either move in there or commute from home!

millhal is a very bad enviroment to live in.
small rooms VERY CRAMPED....and over packed with students

Yeah the rooms are akin to Guantanamo Bay  Have you even lived there?

Take it from me, someone who actually has lived there, Mill Hall is not that bad at all.

Granted it's not as new as the other ones, but the layout doesn't differ that much.

I lived there two years ago and I was pissed when I got Mill, because my judgment was clouded by all the rumours. However, the rumors were greatly exaggerated, (and came from people who never stepped foot in Mill).

No one who isn't on your corridor can access your kitchen because you each have a key.

It is noisy, but that's because you guys are freshers.

It's waaaaaayyyy more sociable compared to the newer ones, because of it's open plan layout. You instantly have 14 potential friends and the odds of you becoming mates is higher than if you were living in the newer ones.

And last but not least, it's the closest to the social science dept, business dept, library, bus stop, canteen, cashpoint, security station, the academy, bars and student union.

It's certainly not the Ritz, but its not a horrible place to live.

yeah its really noisey too and they have problem with ants, not to mention the rumours of suicides

do a search on the forum, quite a few threads about mill hall

Whaaa! Mate someone lied to you.
Btw just to let you know most universities do not let girls sleep on the ground floor as a safety precaution measure.

Hey first post here, im in for going to Mill Hall myself, although from what im hearing im not being inspired with confidence about going there... Is there any way to change my accomodation to a newer hall, eg flemming or something? I wanted to go into flats rather than corridors anyway. Im ringing up as it is because brunel has earmarked £750 out my account instead of the £250 for deposit, so they're not doing to well so far :p:

okay thanks, so why would it be noisy if there are only approz 15 people in your corridor, its like a flat but with more people? why is everyone making it sound sooo bad.

"ant infestation"
"cold"
"water too hot to wash dishes"
"fire alarms go off at 3 a.m."
"like prison"

these are just some of the terms i have come across for mill hall.

also someone mentioned a suicide, however i found out that someone was just really drunk and fell out of the window << to anyone who was freaked out, and to the one who mentioned it  phewwwwwwwwww

am i in denial :frown:?

It's noisy because, although there are only a certain number of rooms per corridor, someone will always have friends over, someone else will be playing loud music etc. Not only that, but you can hear what's going on above, below and in the stairwells.

I don't know anything about most of the other problems mentioned (except fire alarms, but that happens in all the buildings. It gets less frequent as the year goes on and people realise they make themselves very unpopular by setting them off), as I personally have never lived in Mill and I do suspect there's a bit of exaggeration here. However, the problems I do know about are very definitely real, and are the noise and the food thievery from the fridges.

From the pictures the Faraday rooms seem well laid out, but then again they don't really give an insight of the space available.
:hmmmm:
What size would you recommend?

thanks

If you look at shake n' bake's post its exactly what my sister told me. I'm sure it will be fine. Don't worry. What are you studying by the way?

I never had a problem with ants, but that's because I kept my room very clean. A lot of students didn't so I wouldn't be suprised that they got ants lol

I think they have a set time for turning the heat on/off, but that's for all halls.

I haven't heard the hot water thing or experienced it

Yes, there are times when the alarms went off in the morning. But again that happens in all the halls.

It's hardly like prison.

To be honest, I think these complaints are from bitter people who didn't get the newer accommodation. Mill Hall isn't without it's faults, but most people I know loved it. I would rather have Mill Hall then any of the standard rooms *shudders*.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

They're small. All the rooms at Brunel are fairly small, but my friend's room in Faraday was way smaller than my room in Fleming. In that sort of space, you really do not want anything larger than something of the sort of size of a laptop screen. If you have a 40", you're going to seriously struggle for space.

Is anyone going to the roller disco on the weds? and if so are you taking/do you need to take your own skates?
