Contact lenses - a guide?

I've been thinking about geting contact lenses for a while now, but the thought of a monthly commitment always puts me off, I'm a poor student and I can't afford contact lenses every month.

Is it possible to get contact lenses once, wear 'em occasionally and then buy more when I run out? Is that possible with the daily ones?

I'm very confused!

If you go to a highstreet optician, most want to commit you to a continuous supply. However, you can buy them online as a one off thing, and can thus get them whenever you want.

But you need to have them fitted by an optician, which online companies cannot do.

I did that with the daily ones for years, until I decided to start wearing them pretty much every day. I first got contacts when I was 12, but didn't start wearing them regularly until I was 16. I get mine from Specsavers, which are about £24 for 30 pairs, so if you don't wear them all the time you won't be paying much at all. I get mine sent to me through the post on a direct debit, but I used to just go in and order some more when I ran out.

Although if you get them on a direct debit, you get free eye tests, reduced cost glasses, and lots of other freebies!

you don't have to commit yourself. I buy mine in 3 month monthly packs, you could buy one of those, and wear them occassionally and they'd last longer. But you do need contact lessons before you can start wearing them, see your optician!

you can buy annual contact lenses which last a year. saves alot dosh. u just treat them as monthlies but you need to cleaning every week regardless of how oftin u wear themm

does anyone know, tho, if you wana buy the same lenses online, can u still stay at that opticians for eye tests and contact lense checkups? cos u can get some nasty stuff from lens wear, but the lenses are alot cheepa online

I doubt the opticians are going to refuse to let you pay for an eye exam :P

I forgot about this thread, but thanks for the advice everyone! As soon as I get a job and get some dosh coming in I'll definitely go see the opticians. They're definitely cheaper online, so I'll see how it goes. Thanks for all your help!
