Chrysalis: Counsellor course

Hello all,

My sister has asked me for some advice, I'm not sure what to suggest. She wants to become a counselor. The problem is that she cannot afford to work on anything but a full time basis. She has found the following course, this would enable her to work full time and study:

Year Advanced Diploma in Counselling & Psychotherapy http://www.chrysaliscourses.co.uk/course.html

As she doesn't have any A level's, this seems like a good route. However, I'm not sure if this course is recognised/respected by employers. I don't want her to end up spending alot of money on a course that is not going to lead anywhere. I would really appreciate others advice on the best course of action. Failing that does anyone know where she could go to get advice on this matter (she is in her mid 20's)?

Thank you!!!!

I'd say that for counselling she should make sure her qualification is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Pychotherapy (BACP) - list of accredited courses is here

"I enjoyed the course, although the essays and case studies were hard work. You get what you put in really, as there is a lot of home study required saying that Chrysalis Courses are the best!"
I am finding the course very stimulating. The tutor is lovely, and the lessons well structured. Chrysalis courses are amazing and great value, study with them!
"I am a year 1 student doing the hypnotherapy course, so far, very interesting and I am enjoying studying with the team at Chrysalis Courses!
Both Chrysalis course and trainer were very professional. I would recommend it to anybody.
The trainer delivers the material very well. It was easy to understand the material with little previous experience in Hypnotherapy, great work all at Chrysalis courses

Hi there - I am studying with Chrysalis and am in year two - I am about to embark on case studies and wondered - if you have finished your counselling course if you have a case study from year two that I could look at to see how I need to set it out?

I already have a person as a volunteer for stress and have an idea of exactly what I want to do with that - what I need is one from another problem area so that I can see what direction I need to head in
Sorry to ask but hope you can help me
Many thanks in advance

Chrysalis has just been chucked out as a member of the BACP - they didn't even attend the hearing and they changed their name just before it - this enabled them to say that it wasn't about them!

If you search the web you'll find many very negative comments about Chrysalis. There are a few positive ones, but it does seem as though many of these are posted by Chrysalis themselves! For instance, there are five very positive reviews on Yell - but they were all posted the same day!!!!

They claim that their courses are recognised by the Hypnotherapy Society and the Counselling Society - hardly surprising when the person who started Chrysalis and still effectively runs it just happens to run those organisations, and Chrysalis and the two associations are all in the same room. (Check this - it's an address in Sussex!)

Hi I'm a moron that stupidly believed that I was emparking on a new career through Chrysalis Courses. In my second year. First year was pointless considering the expenses and I've now found out that Chrysalis went in to liquidation May 10th 2014. You would think thus would be information that a student of Chrysalis would be aware of. Does anyone know anything that can help? I've put my life savingings into this and I am bound by contract to pay regardless of attendance or completion of the course.

First of all, I have no connection with any course provider.

My thoughts- If they have changed their name to avoid censure re investigation .. Hardly the actions of a course provider with high professional & personal integrity is it??

I can't see that you could still be bound to a course financially that has now gone into liquidation.. And more importantly, would have had their qualifications called into question. (I'm not legally qualified in any way)

You need to check this out with a lawyer... Many will give an hours free consultation.

Sounds a rubbish situation - really sorry you've wanted so much time and energy and money.
Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. The reason I said I must pay regardless, is due to a member from my first year left, and has now reappeared in second year. She said that Chrysalis told her if she completed the course or not was irrelevant. She was obligated to pay. Thanks again

Really worried now... I can't find any information that Chrysalis went into liquidation last May. Could you post some more info please? Currently studying 1st year Hypnotherapy and feeling rather cheated!

Hi

There are several threads....but this is just web stuff...

I would check with Companies House to see if they are still trading and/ or if they have gone into liquidation.

If it were me..I would not give them ANY more money til you know the exact situation. The fact that they told someone else they had to pay....well......You may be throwing good money after bad...(Aeons ago once lost 800£ for goods after I sent a cheque and the company promptly went into liquidation...I got £8 back...about 18 months later,,,along with all the other folk they owed money to).

Check with http://www.bacp.co.uk/ . They should be able to tell you why/if the provider lost its validation...

Good Luck!

Interesting that several people seem to have joined the forum especially to talk about how good Chrysalis is. It seems they have better social network PR skills than remaining accredited!
