It's great, if you know where to go.
Nights out are expensive most of the time at the weekend, but nights out during the week are dirt cheap. We have a higher-than-average student population so the city is very student-friendly.
From a day-to-day living perspective, food shopping is fine, you have a Lidl right next to Hillhead, as well as Sainsburys, Tescos, and Asdas all over Aberdeen. There's also an Aldi at the beach. You're not just stuck with one place to shop.
Generally, it could be better, but it could be a helluva worse.

The only thing that's pricey is rent - it's getting similar to London now.
I believe Marmite meant its cheap to go out during the week  90p drinks at Liquid on a Thursday, £1 at Tiger on a Monday...
As for other stuff, there is Lidls, there is Primark, and Poundland, and TkMaxx. It is defo possible to survive on a budget! For the other end of the scale, I do know people who get all their food from M&S... Plus all 3 supermarkets deliver if you can't be arsed wandering across town with your stuff - I know Tesco is only £3 if you pick the right slots, and you'd spend that getting the bus there and back anyway!
There's plenty of part time jobs going if you find outcome is exceeding income - espec bar, restuarant work.
When you move out of halls, remember that it's cold up here! So your heating bill might come in a little higher than it would elsewhere  But I guess that depends on the person...

Can anyone shed some more light on this? I'm going to have a budget of around 670 Pounds a month, would that be alright?

Would I be able to "survive"? Or to actually "live" a little?
£670 a month would be fine, you'll be around half that for rent, and the rest is plenty to live on.
I get paid £440 a month, and I don't pay rent, and I normally have about £100-£200 left at te end of the month.
Part time jobs are easy to come by in Aberdeen.

Wut. Maybe I should work at B&Q! I get £350 for 15 hours a week :frown: That is minimum wage though. Starting new job next month though so pay will be a fair bit higher
How many places are willing to let you have 3 weeks off at Christmas, 2 for Jan exams, 3 for Easter, 2 for june exams, and 4 months in summer? I think that's the main barrier to me finding employment

Ditto! I want/need a job when I go to Uni in september but I don't want to be stuck up there at Christmas! I think I'd just quit my job in summer and find a new one when term started again

My flatmate gets over £7.50 for working in a bar. (I won't say which!)
What about manual labour? I've almost got a summer job back home with a scaffolding company - what's the chance of a job like that in Deen?

Few and far between.
Are you forgetting Aberdeen is full of Eastern European workers who basically specialise in manual labour?

Ooops - yup :frown:
I love it! NIghts out pretty good, and because most of the clubs/pubs etc are close together, theres never far to go and you dont have to decide where to go before going out. RGUnion, the best place to start a night out. End of.
As for employment, everywhere (esp supermarkets) offer holidays, so book in advance and your fine. And, you might be able to get dual store, ie, work here in term time, and in your home store at summer!
But yeh, its great. As everyone has already said, cost wise it depends on you. Go out at weekend and you'll spend a fortune, any other time and your good. More or less the same as most cities for shopping! Only real cost is rent if your in a flat, that can be pricey! Best of luck with whatever you choose to do!

Hmm this seemed to be the most likely thread on Aberdeen to answer my question. I am from Aberdeen but I lived an hour away and never payed any attention to supermarkets, now i'm going to uni there in September just wondering where the closest ones are around central Aberdeen. I know there's a big Sainsburies and Asda at Garthdee but is there anything like a Tesco Extra or something near by? I looked on the Tesco website lol and there was like 2 outside Aberdeen and no more which I though might be kind of wrong considering there are Tescos EVERYWHERE. Just thought i'd ask now cos when the time comes I dont wanna be wandering around aimlessly looking for a place to buy food and end up getting lost!

Oooooooh, when will it open and where will it be? My MacBook is getting old and I was thinking about getting a new one, but can't really decide if I want to buy it now or once I get to Aberdeen. An apple store in Aberdeen would help with the decision.

(Also, would love to work there!)

It's due to open sometime this Autumn I hear - Union Square site

On the chance of getting a job and some sort of additional employee discount on top of the student discount I'll be holding off replacing my 'close-to-death' macbook. Besides, I think with Apple it is always best to leave a purchase to the last minute incase they announce updates.

ASDA: One at Bridge of Don, one at the beach (not far from Hillhead), one at Garthdee.
Tesco: One at Danestone, a Tesco Extra just off campus, one in Torry.
Sainsburys: One on Bedford Road just off campus, one at Garthdee.
Aldi at the beach.
Lidl at Hillhead.
Iceland on Holburn St.
Sainsburys on George St not far from Woolmanhill.

There are countless supermarkets in Aberdeen, and loads of them do free delivery if you order online and spend over a certain amount or use a SnapFax.
