Wolfson College (Oxford) Students and Applicants

Ok, so I got this offer for my MSc and I was over the moon for a month or so...then I received the college offer and I wanted to pick up a piece of paper and cut my wrist with it slowly and painfully (lol, just kidding), cause they put me in Wolfson which is the one single college I've been avoiding when considering my choices cause it seems everything but an Oxford College and cause I didn't want an all grad college.

So here's some questions:

- anyone here is or has been at Wolfson, how far is it in minutes from the center and how's life in there?
- how much of your graduate life is really spent in the colleges and can you somehow get involved with or go to other colleges to hang out (e.g. bars, societies, etc.)?
- if I apply for a Dphil after taking a year out (which is what I'm planning to do), can I apply to some other college or am I stuck with Wolfson my whole life?
- should I get accommodation nearer to the city center or I shouldn't be bothered?

I'm probably coming up with too many questions so I'll stop...Thanks...

Ask Fluffy. She did her DPhil there. I don't find Wolfson that far away, even on foot, but other people might not agree.

I hardly spend any time in my own college. Tend to go elsewhere for fun.

Yes, you can apply elsewhere.

Depends whether you are bothered about the extra time you need to walk or cycle the extra distance to Wolfson.

Oh thanks a lot for taking time to answer all my questions

I just need to clarify one thing. When I said applying for a Dphil after taking a year out I meant AFTER I've done my MSc at Oxford. I read somewhere that it can be difficult to migrate as an undergrad moving on to grad studies, so I was wondering if it can be the same for Msc to Dphil.

Thanks a lot anyway!!

What do you mean? Difficult as in getting a place? Or difficult as in adapting to the study environment?

Difficult meaning that I read colleges are reclutant in letting you move to another college after you've studied at their college (say, I study at Wolfson and for Dphil I want to move to Univ). I don't know whether this is just an urban legend or something. I know that overall colleges are influential for undergrads, though, so for grads it might be different.
Anyway, yeah, I kind of mean 'getting a place'...

There are a couple of MSc students in my research group who moved college for DPhil so it's certainly possible.

I'll be doing Experimental Psychology, MSc in Research Methods. After that I plan to take a year out and then apply for PhD in the states, but I want to apply to Ox again anyway, I just love that uni

What about you?

Yay, I just LOVE it. I already know my way around as if it were my town! When I was in my fresher year I dragged my parents down to Ox and said "I'm gonna come here!" and they were like "yeah, right..." Guess dreams do come true at some point :P

If you're first year then we'll probably be departmental neighbors nxt year :P

I really wouldn't be too down on it if I were you; sure it is a good 25 minute walk from the city centre, but you got grounds backing onto the river and really comfortable looking buildings in compensation.
