My history tutor is also good friends with Dr. Archer as well.............

Hey wouldn't that give you an edge, since your teacher will know what sort of appilicants Dr Archer likes? (assuming he was interviewing you...)

Monii
well it's quite confusing - they're not saying you can't get there without A-level Maths, but on the other hand they really appreciate it

Ah... right, when they say that they usually mean - Be a genuis or have maths.

RxB
It wasn't really either - "require" is very difficult to define in this sort of thing. While they might take people without the subject, not having it is often a major drawback.

Hmm... difficult word to define/understand (especially if someone just reply with one word...lol  ).

Anyways, are you at Oxford right now or are you applying too?

I do PPE at Hertford. To be honest, I didn't really go through all the internal turmoil a lot of people on here seem to go through (perhaps a function of not discovering TSR till post-offer?) and you maybe shouldn't bother - often, it's more a matter of how good you are at maths rather than how much of it you've done (loads of A-level is irrelevant)

First, so right about TSR... i mean loads of nice ppl, but all these damn rumors about everything (Uni likes that, college likes this...blah blah~) just confuses me even more than i am (and believe me, it's hard!)

Do you think the fact that i can only do Fmaths up to As will effect my chances at all? Not as if i can do anything about it...

Last thing, since you study at Hertford - is it nice? (obviously you are gonna say yes...) What is it like? Is it sociable (with other colleges) and how is the relationship between students inside the college? (Groups, everyone together etc...)

Sorry about all the Qs... but uncontrollable urge to know...must-get-answers---

Well, that would entirely depend on how good all the other applicants were- the quality changes year on year.

Teachers at a lot of schools who send pupils to Oxbridge have a general idea of what they are looking for from past experience, but it still doesn't guarantee anything since competition gets harder and the quality changes each year.

Ugh...I got an offer for Merton and am now thinking of just not showing up for my exams! I did an open application, not knowing anything about any of the colleges, and was offered a place there. I have no intention of spending my time at university with my nose in a book the whole time. Ah, well. I can just let down their reputation. But rich, you say? How so? And how's the bar? At least tell me there's a bar...

Merton's not that bad, honest. The people ARE lovely- they just drive me a bit bonkers sometimes since I am not and have never been a hardcore library bookworm. You do not need to spend all your time working away but of course you do need to strike some sort of balance between work and play. I am however being frowned upon for singing in the Oxford Belles, Schola Cantorum and having a lead in a musical (admittedly might have taken on too much this term  ) But ah well, I tell myself people are just jealous hehe. I guess you just need to decide from the start what your priorities are going to be.

Merton is rich in the sense that the rooms are HUGE and lovely compared to most colleges I've been in, the grounds are gorgeous, the food is actually semi-varied (apart from the excess of courgettes) and the Bar, yes we have a bar, sells quadruple Baileys for £3 and is quite a cheerful corner of the college (when people find time to go...) Also, welfare provision is excellent. Not only will they be a shoulder to cry on is things get too much but they give out free food on a Sunday afternoon!

just remember people: The college does not maketh the man - there are people at all college at both oxford and cambridge who are completely different to what the stereotype of their college is. If you choose not to conform to the stereotype then fine, but i found that being around people who do match the stereotype does have an influence on you. For example, being at my college has made me work harder than i've ever worked before because i'm surrounded by people who work loads. Whereas a friend at another college works so much less even though he does the same subject, because people seem to work less overall at his college.

But as I say, you certainly do not end up matching the stereotype exactly....if at all!
Oh hey maybe I'll start working if I get in...

It's more easy to be distracted at some colleges in some crowds - but by and large you're going to be worked hard at Oxbridge on whatever course.

You don't have to work all hours of the day to do well, or even your best. Though I think, doing maths, I could get away with less than in say the lab sciences or in an arts subject when some are determined to read absolutely everything of relevance

Hmm, i suppose so... but my teacher did say our school has been having better luck with Oxford than Cambridge recently... do they also base your applications on schools?

2 School at about the same level, one get 30 in each year and the other only 3... unfair isn't it?

Willa

Yea i know, but in the end if you get into a college with, say, a hard working reputation then like you said you will be "forced" (not technically, but since all your friends do it...) into working harder...

It's hard not to fall to peer pressure...sigh~

Monii
oh that sounds really encouraging

Come on! You be fine! Anyways, you have it upto As right? Is the criteria same for EU students?

Anyways am going to an Oxbridge talk tomorrow... any Qs, tell me now and i'll ask at this thing tomorrow...

Oh joy, that's gonna be me no matter which Uni i apply to (am applying for Eco&man for all of them...)

At least i'm not applying for law...

peer pressure definitely isnt what i'd call it. I'm dont feel pressured into working, I feel I owe it to myself to try and prove to my friends that i'm as capable as they are. There are people I know at my college who strike me as significantly laid back who never seem to do any work. I dont do anything I dont want to do...I want to work hard given the environment I'm in!
WhatFreshHell?

You obviously know nothing of the Exeter attitude to work...

"Well, I suppose I should do some work... oh hang on, there's something good on the telly/someone's going out to the pub/it's a nice day outside/I want to go rowing... sod it, I'll work later..."

Except when there's mods/prelims/finals when it's:
"****, ****, ****! Must work, must work! *hides in the library for six weeks*"

Obviously there's exceptions. Some people live in the library all year round, and some people [like me] who still haven't registered that the culmination of 3 years work is happening in 3 1/2 weeks. But that's a fairly good outline.

Looks like I'll fit in just fine.

Am I the only offer-holder who's only thought about starting revision, and not put it into practise yet? My exams start on May 13th, and finish one month from today!! (God, I'm gonna be so wasted!)
It's so irritating; the only revision I've ever done in the past is for subjects like Maths and History, and the exams I'm sitting this year (french, german, english) I have never had to revise for! I don't know how to revise for German...

well i'm doing the IB diploma - and all british unis give conditional offers based on the IB results...so i'm afraid they're pretty familiar with the maths level there :frown:

so, could you please ask them about the maths for me tomorrow? if an AS equivalent is enough? (it's apparently not for some colleges  ...but i'm quite good at it - i constantly get the best grades from my class and at the beginning opf the year the teacher persuaded me to go to the higher level class... --and i was stupid enough to not to do that  :frown:

Tell me about it, for german i usually just go in and make up some crap for my presentation since i have a appalling short term memory (and believe me the long term ain't too good either). Oh yea, i also have this complex, where i'm fine as long as i don't see/hear/feel the tape recorder... a bit of a prob in orals...

And don't complain, at least upper sixth get to run free straight after your exams... we have to come back and be the slaves of the school and clean up all the mess upper sixth make on the final day... why god why! (i.e am gonna make next yr's lower sixth's life hell)

Well, sounds exactly like me... my 1st exam is next thu and i haven't even touched my books. Actually, don't think i've done any homework since i came back from easter...Lets just say go on hol with friends during easter - V bad idea!

Ok, no probs... i'm sure one more Q wouldn't kill me (I mean it would harm me mentally though  ) Anyways, can't you pick up your teacher's offer now? I mean you can just continue maths and finish it next year... or how do your school work?

I'm going to sleep, just finished my German essay... am dead... (that's why people say- don't leave your homework to the last second...sigh~)
