college bars seem to have normal pub closing time type hours.. though Bezza is at Magd. & apparently Hilda's as a private members club have a 24 hour opening!

what i would call "student bars" i.e. commercial ones in town are standardly open till 2am..
Just to ignore the topic of conversation and go back to the actual thread topic, is Magdalen supposed to be quite conservative and posh? Someone told me that, but I've never actually heard anyone on here say so.

well, do Bezza, grey faerie & I seem especially conservative & posh..? tis an honest Q really.. (hah..just noticed Nick is a member of the conservatives on here! )

hmm - i'd say our stereotype as being politically 'apathetic' is more accurate than conservative! we have a few prominent OUCA types, but then, sufficient left wing idealists too so it seems fairly balanced. & we're largely uninvolved in the Union & general hackery.. the other main stereotype i've heard (& see some basis too) is "insular".

re. posh - well, there is a decent selection of ex-public schoolboys  but that's probably true of any college. & i certainly don't think your background or schooling is a particular issue here, although obviously we do have a few "rah" cliques, but then so does everywhere i imagine..

how exactly do i measure posh conservative-ness?

best thing to do is just visit at some stage i guess. :p:

Interestingly, I'm fairly sure that Lincoln's bar is a "private members club" (as are most of the college bars and it is this that allows them to sell alcohol so cheaply...that's what our JCR Pres said anyways) but despite this the usual licensing laws apply....last orders at 11pm, closed at 11:30pm...hence why I'm starting to hear people shouting/laughing/hearing funny noises in the quad outside my window which is just above the bar...think it'll be a long time before I get to sleep.
Reply 86
hmm, well ours is a business i think, so lack of JCR control on prices :frown: , yet can stay open later..

& Hilda's definitely were doing 7pm - 7am on May eve..

ooh, the intricacies that must exist with regards to laws surrounding alcohol sell! almost makes me want to be a laywer*.

*not enough though! :p:

:frown: sorry for being such a stereotype :frown: I'm not posh though so that makes up for it! I'd say there's a really wide variety of people here so you're always going to find people you have something in common with

That's not technically a bar. It has a late license, meaning either it serves food, is designated as a club, or is a private members club with a private license. Most late bars fall into the first catagory, by serving snacks that are never asked for.

Oh my God! I mean i wanted to row... but now... i'm so not a morning person (goes moody and shout at random people...poor souls who have to put up with me~god bless them...)

I'm rowing and no earlies for me  I'm in the second VIII and they didn't have enough people so they're making it nice for us in order to convince us to row, so no early mornings. Yay! (although having said that, it's 7AM and I'm up.. I wasn't an early morning person either but I'm turning over a new leaf now  )

As for your Qs, the tutor said that she doesn't really know, but she thinks if you are a all round good student and has other prove of your mathematical skills (e.g. if u been in a competition or extra qualification) then it would't really matter. However she advise you to check with the college of your choice...Sorry if this isn't much help...but there were only one tutor there and i don't think she specialised in Eco&Man...

oh you really asked her - sooo sweet of you!
at the moment i can't decide whether to apply to oxford or not...i love is as an institution in general, but i prefer a different course (int. management with french) which oxford doesn't offer :frown:

hehe, sorry off topic there... anyways the only thing i know about Magdalen is that it's suppose to be one of the most beautiful place to be in oxford (The deer park and the tower...)

I think it is also v strong academically...

Oh the amazingness of University (takes a moment in awe of it... )

Do you have to pass some sort of special test inorder to make the rowing team?

Don't worry, it's nothing~

Anyways i don't know any Uni which offer int management as a course as such... I mean Warwick offer it to the extend that you have the choice once you get into a management course...however on your degree it will still only say "Management" (stupid, i know...)

In LSE you can do a joint course of Int Relations and something else (e.g. lang, eco, law etc). They briefly said they offer a range of joint degrees with IR...

About Oxford, to be honest if you are really thinking of coming to Uni in england (which i assume you are, since you attended a british school and all) then i suggest looking up some other Unis, since oxbridge do offer a limited range and combination with Eco/business studies (don't think they offer this)/ management... a Uni with a larger business department is worth looking up! However do apply to oxford... i mean it's a once in a life time thing

well there are quite a few unis offering exactly what i want (though it's called differently) - and Warwick is one of them...I really really love Oxford but i'd enjoy *my* Business (or Managemt) with French more than econ&management

I think it depends at what level you want to row. I'm in the second team of my college and we didn't even HAVE a second team last year so they've basically just let anyone in. I imagine you have to do some kind of selection process to be part of a University team or a First Team of a college that's really serious about rowing and has lots of good rowers!

first boats (and 2nd boats in big colleges) are "seat raced". This is where the trialling rowers competing for a place in these high up boats go out in two boats. Either 2 fours, or 2 eights depending on the number of people trialling. Surplus stand on the side of the river when not being raced. You then race the two boats over a set distance (not v long cos you get tired doing it over and over) and see who wins. Then they swap some people around and race them again and see who wins then. Then they can work out who is the better rowers.

It's also done on 2k erg times, and general commitment/keenness

Our college (well the women at least...can't speak for the men!) make us do 2k erg tests every term to reassess the crews (however, they also consider your technique in the actual boat). However, when we joined as a Novice, we had an introductory outing, then a few days later we had to do a 500m sprint on the ergs followed by a tank session in which they assessed our Potential at rowing, and then they allocated the Novice Crews (although there was a little bit of switching around). But, like Kate said above, some colleges don't take it quite so seriously (I'm not entirely sure why we do  ). If you want to try out for Uni squads you have to arrive several weeks early and be a pretty amazing rower already (most ppl will have done GB trials, if not rowed internationally) and I must stress that I don't specifically know the erg times of the currents Blues (Binya, where have you gone) but I woulde imagine you'd need to pull around/under 6mins for 2k.

Guessing thats the men! , if its the women then  lol have you any idea about getting in the womens blue boat? as people at my club keep saying i should go for it when i arrive but i really don't think i'm any way near fit enough!
Reply 97
Well if you row already then that's a pretty good start. The women's blue boat can probably all pull under 7 mins (that puts me to shame), some of whom I know have pulled close to 6:30 - which is a horrid horrid thought for a guy like myself.

Yeah, at Oxford, we were told that if you could pull around 7:05-7:10 then they would certainly consider you at the beginninbg of trials. Two of my mates (and former crew members) tried out for the "Development Squad" which takes place this summer. To get on to this, they don't really care what sort of times you pull (they have to be reasonable, ie around 8minutes to start) and then they train you intensely for 2-3wks in April and then look to see how much your erg times have improved, so they can assess your potential. Unfortunately, one of my mates missed out :frown: but the other one got in. The one who succeeded was f*cking amazing though! I remember doing 2k erg trials with her and she pulled 7:15 and tht was her first ever attempt at 2k (we'd been rowing about 8wks)!!!! (I pulled 8:27 which I thought was pretty damn good, until she got on and finished more than a minute before me!). I use to hate having to erg and do sprints with her (I was with her in the Novice crew to begin with, but now she's in our first's and i'm in the seconds) as she'd always pull ridiculous splits at seemingly effortless rates! It was thanks to her power and ability that we did so well at Novice level!
