sure, or is it only for current oxford students? You all seem to know eachother...

That's true, there's quite a large group of us on here who know each other for various reasons or another (there are also a lot of Physicists on here...I wonder what that says about us!)

P.s. i've started those rowers off now haven't I?

While we at it, which college would you guys say have the strongest sports teams (rowing and otherwise...)

Different colleges are usually good at different sports, although obviously the larger colleges usually field much better teams! Oriel, Magdalen & Pembroke are usually the big rowing colleges both at college level and for the Blues squad...but New College seems to have some good women's crews (possibly as they're being coached by a Lincolnite! ). Teddy Hall are always known at the Rugby College....Us Lincolnites seem to be the Sailing lot after last weekend's Cuppers Results!

Wawick is a good uni, but i really didn't like the campus... it's so isolated and big... i would imagine you'll feel v lost there...
Argh, deciding which uni to apply for is so difficult~ how many are you allowed to apply?

That's what I hated about Warwick...it feels like you're in a little bubble and in your 2nd year when you have to live out you're miles away in Coventry/Lemington Spa.

You can apply to 6 universities (4 if you're doing Medicine/Veterinary and I *think* Dentistry). You CANNOT apply to Oxford AND Cambridge unless you're an Organ Scholar or a grad.

ice hockey - defending cuppers champions

Oooo I thought Lincoln were Ice Hockey Cuppers winners....but then again, I'm really not sure, so you're probably right...I'm fairly sure we did very well in cuppers last year at least (again I could be wrong, but I got told by my college father we had some v.good ice hockey players)

that one didn't have a star by it..
hmm, we have a/the plaque in our bar & boyf (far too much of a multi-talented sportsman, damnit! ) was on the winning team..

tis possible there's been another cuppers since then though & my sense of time is well & truly screwed & I'm getting old..!

Lol! No you're probably right Elles...like I said, I don't know much about it, my college dad was trying to convince me to take up Ice Hockey! lol.

Yeah, at Oxford, we were told that if you could pull around 7:05-7:10 then they would certainly consider you at the beginninbg of trials. Two of my mates (and former crew members) tried out for the "Development Squad" which takes place this summer. To get on to this, they don't really care what sort of times you pull (they have to be reasonable, ie around 8minutes to start)

ouch 7mins!....well not quite there lol (some of the top men at my club only do 6:30 to 7:00!! ), but i'd be ok for the development squad!

I don't know much about most sports in general, other than Lacrosse where currently St Catz/Queen's seem pretty good - but it's especially variable from year to yera & a fairly fringe sport..

..but to give a one college-centric view for Magdalen:

rowing - very strong; Head of the River in 8s, men's 2nds with 6 bumps in Torpids; women's firsts beeing consistently climbing over the past few years; typically 3/4 men's boats & 2/3 women's
tennis - defending cuppers champions*
water polo - defending cuppers champions
ice hockey - defending cuppers champions
croquet - defending cuppers champions
football - cuppers champion year before last
netball - 2nd div*
rugby - 2/3rd div*
cheerleading - quite a few on the uni squad
hockey - no idea, but certainly a few blues/half blues
lacrosse - enthusiatic! :p:

those are the obvious ones i can think of! * = the more hazy memories.. am open to corrections

Think i better update the summary at the front... suddenly so many info about Magdalen~~(shame it doesn't do economics... )

Anyways you guys are the defending Ice hockey champs? I do a bit Ice hockey myself... but it's mainly figure skating for me though

no, i know that I can apply for 6, but i'm in england... Monii is in Czech republic so i don't know if it's different...

Anyways on the Wawick opening day i had to run around like some sort of headless chick (i'm not weird~seriously!) the economics talk was in the arts centre, which was miles away from the Maths building (Law talk was there  )...

But i probably apply to Wawick anyway, i need to fill up my choices...

As for Physicists, i have a friend who wants to apply for physics in cambridge, but again he is mental... can never do physics, too hard  :p:

I think you have to get put forward by your college for the development squad and not meaning to sound harsh but you have to REALLY be very good and be quite novicey and still pull 8mins. There are several ppl in my boatclub who pull around/less than 8 minutes, but only 2 of them were put forward onto the development squad trials, so I really wouldn't get your hopes up. If you're not getting erg times around 7:20 then it's not worth even trying for the Blues yet. Best to try out for your college team (you'd probably get a seat in the first boat, or in some of the larger colleges, possibly the seconds) and then perhaps by the summer/2nd year you'll be ready to try out for the Blues. But bear in mind that rowing for the Uni will take up a lot of your time, possibly meaning having to sacrifice social life etc.

oh i didnt mean to sound like i would get straight in, like i said in my first post i personally don't think i am good enough its just people at my club telling me i should try so i just wondered what it would take......
Also i don't know if i even want to do it due to how much time it takes up....

Lol, it's fine don't worry! I just didn't want you to get your hopes up already - it'll be better to arrive and be told you really are good enough and to then try out when you have a real chance, rather than thinking you'll easily get in and then being terribly disappointed! If you're worried about time aspect, may I suggest you enjoy Oxford for your first year and settle in and see if college rowing provides you with the satisfaction you require. In your second year, you won't have any exams (well unless you do Physics, Compsci and possibly some other subjects) so in a way your 2nd year will be less stressful and then you can always decide to try out then. I don't know how many hours a day they train, but I know my friend in the mens lightweights trained twice a day (gym session and outing) and it does take up a lot of your time...whether that's the same with the women's boat (I'd imagine it's slighlty less intense) I don't know. Good lucvk anyways - I'm sure you'll love Oxford!!!

EDIT: Just noticed you're a Physicst! YAY!!!!!!!!! Physics rocks (apart from the fact I can't actually do Physics!)....unfortunately that does mean you'll have exams in your second year, but at leats our actual finals won't be as stressful! G2g as I need to go and do a Mechanics Paper!
