It doesn't matter - if you're predicted AAA then go for it.

That's it.

I know right. i have wanted to go into law (i'm doing my GCSE's atm)

I always thought of Durham as a top 10 uni but was astonished to hear terrifying tales about the place.

It is top 10 and I think most people here aren't saying its bad for say employer reputation. Just that the department doesnt care about its students and ****.

High As A Kite
I know law is seriously depressing and requires a lot of hard work, but i know i can work hard.

Wooah. If you think that you shouldn't go into law. But I did some reading this year to decide on if i was interested in Law and I found it fascinating, and not depressing xD Hard work, yes I think it will be

Out of interest, What A-Levels and grades at A-level did people get to enroll at Durham - if you don't mind sharing

I got offered a place at durham to read law from october this year. So havent started yet. I got 3 A*s 6 As a B and a C at GCSE, 5 As at AS in History, Politics, English (Lang/Lit), Religous Studies (Philosophy and Ethics units) and Critical Thinking, predicted 4 A's this year. Its tough to get in no doubt.
P.S Guy above is right, if you are predicted AAA when you are applying to uni, apply. Plus I went to the post offer open day at trevs college and we had the most insane two days. The uni is incredible.

My A-level law teacher studied at durham and really didn't recommend it - on the basis that the staff then were useless and totally non-supportive or helpful. And this must have been 10/15 years ago, shame to hear its still bad.

the funny thing is there's worst law departments out there : LSE (at undergrad level at least)

aye, its so hit and miss - i guess if your a student and you've only ever been to one university then you don't know any better at the time - but id hate to resent it later in life...

personally i don't think its so much to do with the uni choice more the subject : you don't really know what a law degree is going to be like until you're actaully doing, for me i've done some background reading and found uni open day sample lectures good but i could potentially end up utterly hating it (yet i have to admit the risk was always part of the appeal...)

Right just found this and thought Id follow up as Im coming towards the end of my 2nd year now and this is one of the first things that comes up if you search durham law.

I don't really understand the posts in this thread. I've found it excellent. The workload is not that bad at all, law as a subject is really interesting (for me anyway). I'm not sure why people think its so competitive and soul destroying etc. I don't think lawyers are pricks at all. Im baffled really. Maybe its because Trevelyan is a good college with a nice bunch? Most of the lectures are good, most of the tutors are good. I just don't see what the problem is.

How don't they care about students? I mean they haven't shown me a huge level of care but I haven't asked for it and how would they? Cakes for students at tutorials maybe.

Just posting this because I don't want people finding this on google thinking that durham law is awful and getting put off I'd recommend it any day of the week to potential applicants

I feel I've got to jump in here as a 1st year at Durham studying law.

Yes, I also get the feeling that a number of the lecturers are slightly aloof and dislike dealing directly with the students, but that is a minority. And after all, they are terrifyingly intelligent people.

As for no real bonding between Law students, I accept that the Law society is pretty **** and rarely gets stuff done (apart from the amazing law ball). That said, due to the college structure in Durham, with respect I have never found the need to get to know other law students that well, as I go to every lecture with my friends from my college who study law. And if I wanted to get to know more law students, I'd just start a conversation with them in a lecture or tutorial.

Also throw in the fact that Law students enjoy complaining. As a general rule, myself included, we are a very arrogant bunch who think we are very clever, and supremely confident. We dont like things not going our way and we nitpick often.

Just to pick up on another of the point, I've only had 1 phd student give a lecture to me all year, and that was really good quality as well.

Finally, you've got to understand that studying an incredibly challenging subject at one of the best universities in the world is not going to be easy, and you need a lot of personal strength and motivation. I've seen Durham compared earlier in this thread with Newcastle (dead average) and Northumbria (barely a university) which is just bizarre. Of course Durham is going to be more competitive than them.

If you are terrified of competition, dont do law. Or go do it at Northumbria.

Durham's not one of the best universities in the world, it just thinks it is. check out the ARWU stats.

League tables are *******s.

Anyway, where's the cut off between 'the best' and 'not the best'?

What are your other choices?

Durham is an incredible university and place to be in the general sense.

my other choices were queenmary KCL SOAS. but i've firmed durham
What Tufts said tbf.

The students are horrible khunts and right now your elective options are limited to gender studies and law and variations thereof. Some top lecturers on some courses, some pretty shambolic ones, you'd definitely get the same quality of teaching at LSE/Bristol/UCL/King's/etc., don't bother.

3rd year top of performance spectrum.
Okay, I've been reading this all and I couldn't help but notice that the answers are quite old. Could somebody please give me information about the current situation? Is it still that bad?
