Ooh, really? Thanks.

Erm.. well I was going off the compulsory courses for single honours Biology. Actually, now I'm kinda confused. Going off the information I found earlier these courses were Origin and Diversity of Life 1, Quantification in the Life Sciences 1, Environmental and Community Biology 1 and Molecules, Genes and Cells 1. I assumed these were the core classes, and these were the only courses Timetab brought up under "Biology"...

But now I cannot find that information anymore, maybe I was looking at an outdated course list? Especially considering it doesn't seem as if Edinburgh even offer single honours Biology anymore and Bio seems to be split up into constituent parts.

Hmm, I'm just confused now actually. Timetab doesn't bring up any other courses other than those four..

Edit: Oh, wait a minute.. I see. Most of the Biological Sciences course are the same. For example: https://www.star.euclid.ed.ac.uk/ipp/utbsmol.htm
The subjects only differentiate in the second and third years.. So really, yeah.. there is only a limited number of Biology courses that I could take. It only seems to be Origin and Diversity of Life which doesn't clash with my Maths courses.

Here is a link to the list of biology courses. You can have a look at that and see if it clears anything up. I think TimeTab is still on data from last year, so if there are new classes or something, they probably won't show up.

Maths, but unsure which outside courses to take. I want Biology, but a lot of them require prerequisites of other courses, so I'd have to take a lot more credits worth of courses, just to be able to take them..

I had that problem with Economics. I just went ahead and chose an Economics module which didn't lead onto anything else.

Biology's a difficult one though cause there's lab stuff, etc. etc.
I might give Philosophy a go actually.. I loved it at A Level and I'm interested in it. The Logic 1 course looks really interesting, it's just a shame they're not teaching Philosophy of Science this year. :frown:

I was going to do Logic, apparently it's really difficult! Each man to his own though  You staying at Pollock? I stayed at Chalmers St. in my fresher year.

I won't have to have made up my mind by the time I meet with DoS will I? I assume I can discuss all my possible options with them rather than making the decision myself, lol.

Yeah, I'll be at Chanceller's Court. Looking forward to it!!

Here's the DRPS for BSc Maths, it's pretty much the same as the other courses with regards to outside courses: https://www.star.euclid.ed.ac.uk/ipp/utmathb.htm

Here's a general database of all of the outside courses: http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/10-11/index.php

My mate lived in Chancellor's Court, it's really nice.
Does anyone know if it's possible to take outside courses even further in second year regardless of degrees. This is a long shot but I'm just wondering. So I guess I'm saying instead of coming out with MA Sociology & Politics after 4 years, one might come out with say, Politics & Japanese or Politics & David Beckham Studies etc. Just a random stab, would this ever be possible? Reason being, I'm going on to the aforementioned course but my passion for Chinese language and ability has really improved but my loins still brew for the tasty beverage of politics. Just wondering, any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!
I think I've got this right. So I should be able to do Economics 1A, Accountancy 1A and Bussiness Studies? And is there likely to be overlap between Economics and Bussiness Studies?

Correct - that was pretty standard for Business Studies students 4 years ago. Don't forget that Accountancy is split into 1A and 1B - one in each semester - so you'll need both for the 40 credits.

Note you'll also be doing a bunch of computing tutorials (worth no credits), which are a waste of time. You sign up for them individually (i.e. can pick different times for each one).

I don't recall much overlap between Business Studies and Economics. The former essentially consists of a couple of introductory lectures from each area of the Business School (e.g. human resources, operations strategy, business economics, management science etc). Economics on the other hand is very dry, mathematical demand and supply. The School of Economics used to be part of the Management School but they split about 2 years ago - hence both are quite aware of what each other do and the fact that most of their students take courses from the other as well so overlaps and clashes should be minimal anyway.

Great! thanks for your reply
Oh I didn't realise Management was an option too, now I'm not sure which 2 out of Business Studies, Accountancy and Management to pick for my 2 outside subjects. (I applied for Economics)....

Management is Business Studies. There's only Economics, Accountancy and Business Studies. Sorry for any confusion.

When I started there was a single school called Management School and Economics. It then split to form the separate School of Economics and the Business School (Business Studies and Accountancy). But two are still very close.

In the first and second years i'm preeeeetty sure you can switch to whatever degree combination you please, provided you have done the required modules. At least, that's the impression the first post in this thread gives - give it a quick look over. I'm also doing SocPol and also am wondering if i might want to end up with a different degree.

ALSO this made me laugh out loud. Brewing loins? Well put. :yep:

Your belief is correct (as is my post)

Basically, if you want to swap degree combinations you need to fill in a form around March time in either 1st or 2nd year (or both!) then get someone from your school to sign it (either your DoS or some academic secretary, depending on your school's rules) then providing you pass all of the necessary modules and they don't get inundated with requests to transfer to Gaelic, or whatever it might be you want to switch to, then you'll get an email at some point in the summer after results telling you that the transfer has been approved.

Most people change at least once, some people change their degrees after year 1 then again after year 2 if they change their mind!

If the subject combination you want to do doesn't exist as an actual degree on DPRS you can ask for them to create a combination for you, providing the timetables for 3rd and 4th year don't clash etc. It normally involves going to a meeting with an important person and putting forward your case, then as long as both departments agree to it then it seems to get approved! Again, you have to apply in the same way as mentioned above. For switching to language degrees you'd need to do it in 1st year as by the end of 2nd year you'd be arranging your year abroad so it'd be too late to suddenly decide you wanted to swap.
oxymoronic

swap.

Thanks so much to you and mishintio! This has helped so much and made me very very happy. It's 3 am and my tired eyes have widened in to pools of sopping wet joy :eek3: thanks
