Outside subject(s) in 1st and 2nd year *post here with questions*

So I still haven't really decided what I might want to do for my new outside subject for 2nd year... I was thinking of History of Art, but recently I've been contemplating picking up a new language.

Now, I'll already be doing French 2 this year along with eng Lit 2, so I was wondering if anyone had picked up a new language on top of already doing one in either their first or second year, and how they got on. I was considering Italian, but possibly also German as I have done some German before when I was at school...

Thoughts? Would it be too much?

I did Spanish 1B in first year alongside doing Swedish from scratch. I didn't think the workload was a problem at all. I do English Lit too
Static.

Hi five for Eng Lit!

Fabulous; so did you do Swedish 1A, or one of the introductory courses or something? I was reading around on DRPS about Intro Italian or German, and both were saying places were reserved for like engineering/sciency students and those not in DELC (which I would assume I kind of am, being an Eng Lit-er and also doing French 2).

Did you/are you keep(ing) up one or both of the languages after first year?

I did Swedish 1A, yeah. Even if you could take one of the 'intro' courses (which I don't think you'd be able to do as you're already an LLC student), I don't think you would have any problems at all with a normal 1A course alongside French 2.

I'm not carrying on with Spanish because I didn't particularly enjoy the course, although I'll be doing Swedish because I'm actually joint honours English Lit and Scandinavian Studies.

Nothing to panic about. Nothing happens until you meet your Director of Studies during Freshers Week who wil talk you through the course choice.

You're looking at the wrong DRPS. You need to be in the 10-11 one, while you were looking at 08-09. https://www.star.euclid.ed.ac.uk/ipp/drps_bio.htm That's the link to the current one. It should tell you your core courses, and then you'll see how many extra credits you have for optional courses. You don't need to make any decisions until you meet with your DoS during Freshers Wee, so don't panic.
Thankyou so so much guys.... It was just with everyone wanting timetables and everything I thought I had messed up really bad.

links updated for the 10/11 academic year - sorry I've been a wee bit late on the uptake there!
I've constructed a possible timetable for my first year but each course I want to take has been given three time slots each week in the timetable. I'm assuming the timetable is just showing me when the lectures/tutorials could be and then my DoS will choose which one I actually go in, but I'm not sure. Please could someone put me on the right track ? I've got a feeling I'm wrong.

What courses? Some courses have several different lectures in a week, others have a selection of times to attend the same lecture and there are also some courses where you attend different lectures during the week depending on your chosen specialities.

I think mine might be the second one. It's for history, and then hopefully I can get Swedish as my outside subject (Scandinavian Studies). It's showing me 9 lectures a week and I think that may be too many for history. Thanks for your help .

Yep, that'll be all the various History lectures. Swedish shouldn't be a problem as all the "A" courses within Scandinavian Studies tend to run in the mid to late afternoon which generally avoids clashes.

Thanks, that's what I thought, but I wasn't completely sure .

I don't understand how you would have time to do more subjects than required for your main degree!

It's only for the first two years which, for the most part, don't count towards your final degree.

At a lot of other universities, particularly English ones, you also do several different modules even if you are only officially studying one subject - I was at UCL for a term a couple of years ago doing a History BA, but I was actually doing 4 seperate classes (and the appropriate work load for each); a core historical survey course, a historical theory course and two 'options' (American post Civil War history and an Enlightenment course for me).

For English Literature, we effectively only do one module of English Lit a term in first and second years, and so we only have 4 contact hours (3 lectures and a tutorial) - that's a loooot of spare time, and the university make us single honours students do an extra 80 credits (so, 2 full year 40 credit courses, or an appropriate combination of 20/40 credit subjects) to make sure we don't become complete dossers

It's also great for experiencing new things - picking up something you've never actually studied before, for example, like a new language - and getting a bit more variety in your education, and there's plenty of time to focus just on your degree in third and fourth year, where at least Eng Lit honours students do a variety of different modules.

In my first year, I also enjoyed the challenge of balancing a few different classes. If you get really stressed with one, as well, you can always leave the work for a while and do something completely different, and if you end up HATING your honours choice, if you earn enough credits in a subject for first and second year there's the potential that you COULD switch (so long as all the various departments and people are happy, and there's space). I'm carrying on French this year as an outside course for example; if I wanted to and did well enough this year, I could switch to English Lit with French.

Is course X good or bad?

Look on the course reviewer here...

Am I the only one that is getting an error message with this link? It used to work for me...

It isn't working for me either. I had a quick google but all of the links give the same message.

Yep, me too. Bugger. Just when I really need it, too...
It'll be a victim of the new EUSA website - they launched their new and rather rubbish website over the weekend. It's not finished and it's not very good. You can view some of the reviews, with reasonably difficulty by looking at the google search and then viewing google's caches of the pages, here.
