I've picked my outside courses for next year but there's a timetabling issue because there are two lectures at the same time in first semester. Will this be an issue in allowing me on the course?

You need to pick something else.

They're not going to let you do an outside course where lectures clash - I wanted to do that in 2nd year and they said no even though the outside course was an additional option offered by my actual degree subject so it made sense that I did it too, but as I was doing joint honours anyway it clashed.

Hi!

Wonderful that I found all this information!
I am an international student that is going to start study Landscape Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art. I could not find the programme in the list ( I guess it is because its not at the uni, although ECA will be an academic partner in an academic federation with the uni in August).
Do someone of you know where I could see the courses of ECA?
I did find the outside courses because it was for both Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
Do you know if it would be possible for me to change to Architecture later, if I change my mind, as for example in the 2 year?
Do you genereally write what outside courses you have studied in your CV when you are out and are searching for job?
Do you know if you can somehow study language as an outside course while youre studying Landscape Architecture?

No, it is in the university. Edinburgh College of Art will become a part of the University of Edinburgh (mostly in the School of Arts, Culture and Environment) on August 1st. When you arrive it will definitely all be the same university.

Resolved.

The first question would need to be directed at the department. The second isn't relevant as there appear not be any outside courses for your degree.

Not as an official outside course. However, you should have access to the Languages for All scheme run by EUSA and DELC.

Question One:
When I applied for a joint degree (Econ/Politics), is it possible to theoretically change the second subject (politics) to something else in the second year should I find a more interesting subject than that?

Question Two:
Is it possible/manageable to take more than one outside subject (i.e. having more than three subjects total)?

Thanks!

If you take the necessary subjects in first/second year, you should be able to change your degree. You should check on drps and stuff to make sure you have all the required courses for the change, though.

As for the extra courses, it will depend on who your DoS is and whether you can convince him/her you're capable of doing it. I took 140 credits in my second year, as I came in with really strong results from my IB diploma. If you can convince them you're capable of pulling off extra credits then it might happen. You'll probably have to have a good reason though.

If you are given permission to study extra credits and it turns out you have overstretched yourself, pass your 120 credits but not your extra 20 credits, are there significant consequences? Obviously you would be aiming to get the best mark you could. I was just wondering if a worst case scenario happened and you didn't, whether it would hinder your progress as they were extra credits. I imagine they would be on your transcript though either way.

Nothing will happen if you pass at least 120 credits, as long as those of those 120 credits, you passed the subjects necessary for your degree. The failed courses will show up on your transcript, though. However, you can drop any course up to week 5 without it showing up on your transcript or anything, and it should be fairly obvious by week 5 whether or not you're going to be able to handle the extra work.

So I've been considering journalism as a future career option and since Edinburgh doesn't seem to offer any actual journalism courses (or if it does and I have missed them please point them out, cheers), what would you recommend as a good outside subject?

I'm already doing Psychology and Philosophy if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

EDIT:

Oh and I forgot to ask, my psych 1 is directly after my philosophy classes all year and apparently it's in a different building. Looking at the schedule I should have 20 minutes to get there but timetab apparently sees fit to give me a warning? Has anyone had any trouble with this?

According to Timetab the location for Psychology 1 isn't confirmed yet - albeit it will be somewhere in the central area. Looking at last year's timetable, it was held in one of the David Hume Tower lecture theatres - no more than five minutes away from George Square Theatre. As a large 1st year course, there's only so many lecture theatres large enough to seat everyone so it's likely to be one of GST, DHT or Appleton Tower, which are all next to each other.

Nothing to be concerned about.
Hi, i was wondering if anyone on here can answer these questions?
1. do your subjects for the first and second years have to be related to each other?
2. Is fine arts taught at both the ECA and the Uni?
3. Are there any characteristics that they look for in applicants? anything in particular that i need to mention in my personal statement?
4. Are they likely to ask for more points in an offer than the stated requirement on their website? I've heard of univeristies like manchester asking for 34 in IB, then giving out offers for 36.

Thanks in advance

Read the first post of this thread and also read the applicants FAQ thread first post. The answers to all of your questions are in there.

No. Fine Art is currently 100 credits worth of work in first year, leaving you with just 20 credits of outside courses. Fine Art appears to have additional rules about what you can study alongside it.

Hi, I've applied to study English Literature single honours.
I'm thinking of doing a French 1B module after attaining an A at Higher, and also a Psychology module. I know there's no guarantee that I'd get onto the Psychology course, but I'm just wondering - if I took Psychology module in 1st year, and in 2nd year took all the reccommended modules as outlined for accreditation on the BPS website (Differential Psychology, Social Psychology, Biological Psychology, Developmental Psychology - worth 10 credits each), would I be eligible to have an accredited degree and eventually, in the event of further training, education etc, practice psychology?
At present, I'm unsure whether I want to be a secondary English teacher or a psychologist of some sort (probably educational). Apologies if I'm not making any sense... basically I'm asking if I would be able to transfer to English Literature and Psychology (joint honours), even though it's not a specifically-outlined degree course? I'd like to have the option to pursue 2 careers... but I know there's no guarantee I'd even get on the Psychology course. Thanks in advance

I have a year of university behind me and am now moving to Scotland and starting a new degree, but I was wondering if I'd be able to use some of the credit I've already earned as my outside subjects. For example, I took German as an optional course at my uni (90 minutes three times a week), it was worth 1/4 of the semester's credits and there was a final exam that awarded me the CERF level B2 (I received an A on the exam). Do you think I have a chance of substituting one of the outside subjects like this? (I would get all the necessary documents from my previous uni)

No. When students transfer they still have to do a full years work. You're not transferring - you're starting from scratch - so you certainly can't make work you've already done count double!

It actually depends on department I guess, I am retaking year 1 as I swapped courses, but I passed with good grades all the courses from last year and didn't want to waste the grades. I am therefore going to be doing a part time year this year to study two subjects, not doing one outside course with the credits from this year. Of course, I will at the end still have a few excess credits but it's not so bad.

Suffice to say that baffa is not in this situation. You cannot do 40 credits of German at the University of European City, quit the university, start a new degree at the University of Edinburgh as an ordinary first year and somehow expect to avoid 40 credits of work in first year with some stuff you did elsewhere. If it was an internal issue (like yours) then there might be room for manoeuvre, and if it was a transfer there might be a possibility for a negotiation. But baffa appears to be starting from scratch in Edinburgh.

I guess, but maybe they will be more leniant and allow him to progress anyway should he fail one course in first year given that he already has 40 credits. Baffa should phone/email and ask anyway.

Thank you for the quick reply! It would've worked in my country so I was hoping it would in Edinburgh too, but guess not then. I will be studying Architecture, so my first outside subject will be in second year and I was hoping I could relieve the workload a bit. I obviously have more credits from my first year at uni, I was just hoping that the German with the qualification would be most acceptable to Edinburgh as they have no way of knowing the exact quality of other courses when compared to those taught at Ed.

EDIT: As I won't have to choose an outside subject until second year I will ask my DoS once I'm there. I was just wondering how likely it would be.
