Hi, I have recieved an offer to study english language and history at edinburgh next year, but since applying have decided i no longer want to study english
language as a degree. However, i have heard edinburgh is flexible so is it possible
that when i get there i could switch to a single history degree or maybe do
english language as an 'outside course' in the 1st year and ditching it before 2nd?Thanks  x

Yeah, that's perfectly possible. Just speak to your DoS in freshers week when you get here  They might say you've got to do a year of English language before you can switch and then you'd need to ensure you did all of the right modules in first year, or they might just swap you onto the history degree from the outset. See this thread where I've moved you into for more details - the thread you replied in was over 3 years old!

Is it allowed to visit randomly other lectures just in my free time? I´m from Prague and it is quite common at Charles University.
Thanks:smile:

I don't think anyone will stop you, but you may need to get permission from lecturers/whoever if it is a very small course or if it is a course that is very full so that there is not much room in a lecture theatre.

For instance, no one would know/care if you sat in on first/second/third year maths lectures (because they are quite large), but I don't if that's the case for everywhere.

As has been said, depends which course it is - if you turned up at a lot of first/second year lectures then no one would know as the courses are huge but if you turned up at the same courses in 3rd and 4th year then it'd be really noticeable as the courses are much smaller.

Hey I'm trying to decide my outside subjects - I'm taking English Literature. I'd like to do French, and perhaps English Language, however I can't find "English Language 1" or the codes stated on DPS... I am trying to figure out whether there is a clash and thus, whether or not I can take the two - they, according to the information I manually found on DPS, seem fine, except for Friday: the English Language lecture finishes at 3 and the French one starts at 3. Is this a problem? I can't seem to find concrete information about the lectures will be, but I'm thinking David Hume tower? Thanks.

English language and linguistics seem to have combined for first year as of 2011 entry, so the course you want is called 'linguistics and English language 1' - you can find it from the schools list, then select philosophy, psychology and language sciences. I can't remember whether I have the 11-12 or 10-11 course requirements link in the first post, the 11-12 one probably wasn't available when I updated it for this year so I can do that now.

And yeah, you'd be fine with having lectures like that - the lectures are 50 minutes long so you have enough time to get from one to the other. The linguistics/English lang classes will probably be in Appleton Tower, or in one of the other lecture theatres around George Square. Either way you'll be able to get from one to the other fine as French and English language/linguistics is an actual degree too so both of these courses will be compulsory for these students.

Great, thank you so much
I'm beginning History of Art in September but was wishing to change to a joint History and History of Art degree. I emailed the uni but they said to change at freshers week. I was just wondering how competitive History classes are to get into as outside courses if i can't join my degree? stressing a little bit

There's loads of history options to chose from (something like 15) so as long as you opted for a combination of two history courses that would allow you to progress into the later years it would be fine. I think some of the history classes are fairly small.

The History classes are huge, and lots of people do them as outside courses. I had no problem switching into European History 1 a few weeks into the semester, so you should be fine doing it in Freshers Week.
Sorry if this has been asked before,
but do you need any prior knowledge in any outside courses to take them?
If I'm an economics student and I wanted to study psychology and ...say geography... would it be okay if
I have interest in them but don't really have any knowledge?

It depends, to some extent. For example, if you haven't done anything past GCSE maths then you wouldn't want to do the first year maths courses. Same for physics. I'd imagine it's the same in most of the science, though it may be easier in informatics. I think, however, that it would be a lot easier for things like psychology or geography. However, it is best to talk to your DoS about it during fresher's week. They'll be able to give you a definitive answer for a particular course.
I am interested in doing Architectural history as an outside course and it seems that lectures will be held at Edinburgh College of Art. I would have another lecture in the area of George square ten minutes after that lecture ended. Would it be possible to get from one to the other in that time? I am not familiar with Edinburgh and it seems that according to google maps it would take more like twenty minutes.

Shouldn't be a problem.

They're about a five minute walk between them. Google Maps shows the ECA's furthest entrance from George Square. There's an entrance on Lauriston Place (just West of Keir Street). From that door, it's a couple of minutes walk down Lauriston Place to Middle Meadow Walk (the tree lined walk with an RBS and Starbucks at the top of it). Down there, first left and you're in George Square.

Google Maps doesn't show MM walk as connected to Lauriston Place, so won't route you down there, but it's perfectly possible to make the walk.

Quick question: I've pretty much decided to switch my outside subject to something more related to my degree. I'd need 40 credits, and the ones I'm most interested in would be 2 worth 20 each, but they're both in 2nd semester. So, my question is would I be allowed to have 80 credits next semester, and only 40 this semester? Or do they prefer you to be doing 60 credits each term?

Your DoS would probably rather you spread yourself evenly, but if you're set on that combination, there are no clashes and you make it clear you can cope with the workload then it should be fine.

I did 80/40 in the first year and nobody said anything about it to me . It was hard work around essay time (all my deadlines were really close to eachother) and I almost had too much time in second semester but it was fine other than that.
Probably a weird question (what else is new lol), but is it possible to take more courses in your own subject? Like, if it's your first year, is it possible to make one of your "outside" courses a second year course in your main subject? Or some optional course in your subject?
