Your situation is different as I have no idea how ECA works. It's only the 2nd year its been affiliated to Edinburgh University and as none of the current students here are studying/have studied an ECA degree, we don't know how the set up is for students who are now studying via Edinburgh Uni. I'd imagine it'd be different to the normal route.

I had two flatmates studying at ECA last year, plus friends downstairs, and none of them did outside subjects. I'm not sure if this has changed this year, and if you've been told you can take other subjects then ignore me, but certainly last year, despite the merger, they just weren't an ECA thing - I assume due to the time, in the same way they're not a medic thing, and you can't take Medicine or ECA subjects as outsides

hey, does anyone know, is it possible to change a half year second semester course (20credits) to another half one in November/December?
One of my outside subjects is divided to 1A and 1B in first year, and I'm thinking of choosing another half year course in second semester instead of that respective 1B course.
Any hints, experiences, ideas? Thanks in advance!

Go ask the undergrad secretary for your subject. My inclination is there's a good chance you could change it if the course you want onto isn't full already
hey i recently got accepted to Edinburgh for history ma. However I was wondering how difficult is it to take econ 1A as an outside subject. Also provided i do well in econ 1a will i be relatively easy or hard for me to switch into economics or economics and economic history? This is because although I want to do history most likely im worried about its flexibility

Taking as an outside course should be fine but in order to be able to switch you need to do all the required courses that someone doing the degree you want to switch onto (economics/economic history) would have to do (and pass) which may be (probably is) more than the 1A course

yeah but the required courses for econ history already fall under the history ma required courses to choose from the schools electives. 80 credits basically, my plan is 40 credit british history, british society social history 1.1 1650-1880, british economic and environmental history since 1900 all of which I am definitely in given that they form my 80 credits in history and then the 40 credit econ 1a course. Only worry is does it run on lottery and I cant get in for econ 1a.

You get some courses that get super full and they can't let extras in- it happens fairly often with the 1A type politic courses. If that happens then I think it is first is everyone who is required to do it (if applicable), then other people within the same school as the subject, then everyone doing a subject that the course subject does joint honors with

You can easily take economics 1A as an outside course since it does not have a quota. So if you have the spare credits it's more than possible to pick it!

I took economics 1A this year as an outside course!

There's never any 'lotteries' like random selection, it's done based on the things I said above. To find out exactly what your odds of getting in are you'd need to find someone who did the course in the last year or two and see if they chucked anyone out at the start. FWIW most courses are fine

thank you so much for this advice. Also nicck thank you that relieves me. Great advice about econ 1a
just a quick question:

say if you applied to study english, and you take geography and philosophy as your outside subjects for the first two years, after that, are you allowed to drop the subject you originally applied for and instead continue on with one of the two outside subjects for the remainder of your degree?

because I understand that you study 3 subjects in equal amounts for the first two years, so it seems like there wouldn't be a problem with regards to which one to choose to focus on in years 3 and 4.... :s-smilie:

Yeah, you've got it right - you can follow whatever subjects you want in 3rd and 4th year assuming you meet all of the pre honours requirements by taking all of the right courses and getting the right grades.

With English I believe there is a restriction on transferring your degree to English simply because the course is really competitive so it'd be a bit of a back door entry to allow people to apply for another subject, take English in Y1 and 2 then end up doing an English degree anyway. However, English has restrictions on the number of people who can do it as an outside subject anyway whereas other subjects generally have space. I can't imagine there would be an issue if you decided that you wanted to drop English after Y1 or Y2 and then do something else.

I know people who applied for linguistics, then ended up graduating with a degree in Japanese (for example) as they decided to do 3rd year in the subject which was originally their outside. Most people make some kind of changes to their degree, usually switching between single/joint honours and vice versa.

Hi all,

I am an Edinburgh applicant with a pending application for History (V100).

Just a quick question; would I hypothetically be able to take Law and Social Anthropology as my outside subjects if I came to Edinburgh? Is it just an issue of practically/timetabling? Or are popular courses difficult to select as your outside subject?

Excuse my ignorance, this had probably already been answered somewhere on this thread.

Feedback much appreciated!

No. The History DPT requires 80 credits of study in first year History courses during first year, which means you wouldn't have sufficient credits remaining to take both Anthropology and Law. You could take one or the other.

I have a few friends taking Law and Social Anthropology as their outside subjects so I don't think that it'd be an issue of popularity if you decide to take one of them.

Perhaps this has already been asked, but how likely is it that I can pursue an International Relations degree and Spanish in my third and fourth year. I understand that joint degrees can be negotiated with administrators. How often does this happen? Also, is there an additional cost associated with this?

Pretty unlikely. There's no joint degree offered and individuals DPTs are no longer supported by the university (essentially, if there's a popular demand then it will be made an official degree, if there isn't you're just being awkward). The only ray of hope is that I note the IR degree has what amounts to 20 credits of "outside course" each year in years 3 and 4. Spanish Language 3 and 4 are 20 credits each. Providing there is no timetable clash, you should be able to study those elements.
Hello

I've applied to study MA Religious Studies and I'm a little confused about the whole combination course thing.

From reading the website it says I could specify in one religion and a language, specify in two religions or do the combined course thing.

http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/divinity/studying/undergraduates/degree-programmes/religious-studies

(it's under course options)

I was just wondering if I got that right? Or will I have to take another subject on top of the language or extra religion?

Thank you!
