Outside subject(s) in 1st and 2nd year *post here with questions*

During freshers you will have a meeting with your personal tutor and he will sign them up for you!

Are you only required to take outside subjects with some degrees? So people doing philosophy can do straight philosophy for four years whereas people doing anthropology are forced to take outside courses in first and second year?

I am enrolled to do social anthropology but really want to change my degree to philosophy, is this something that can be done?

So could I do the full 40 credits from social anthropology (this is the degree I am enrolled for) and the 80 credits from philosophy?

How many philosophy credits would I need to pick up if I wish to change my degree to philosophy in second year

As far as I understand, the academic year begins 13.09.2013? And the whole week before is Industion Week, right? So, it is only for freshers or does everyone can attend? Also, if I had a flight on 9.09.2013 (monday) would I miss something, or is it generally not so important when I arrive? Are there set dates, during which freshers are compelled to arrive?

I have a couple of questions about the outside subject which I was hoping someone might be able to help me with...

I've been accepted (conditionally) for English Lit and Art History starting in September. Ideally, I would love to take French as an outside course as I would love to study for a year abroad there. However, I didn't take the subject as an A-Level - is it therefore not possible?

Also, can individuals taking Art History also take Architectural History as an outside subject? Was thinking about this as another possibility.

As for the French courses:

-French 1A requires: "A pass at Standard Grade (SCE) or GCSE or evidence of equivalent proficiency in French."

Does your diploma at the end of the four years mention the outside course you took in the first two years? Say I want to study Philosophy as an outside subject, with an MA in Economics and Politics. Would there be any evidence of me studying Philosophy after I graduate?

I'm going into second year at Edinburgh and I have a bit of an issue - how you can help me out!

I was told by my person tutor that I am required to continue one of the outside courses I took last year. My main degree is English Literature (40 credits), and the outside courses I did were Spanish 1A (40 credits) and two Sociology courses (20 credits each). I am not too keen on continuing Sociology and the Spanish 2 course looks too advanced for me (studying medieval spanish texts, for one). I thought of the Spanish 1B course but my friend pointed out that I sat that exam next year (Spanish 1A and 1B had the same exam) so I wouldn't be liable for it. I suppose my question is whether I absolutely need to keep going with one of these courses or can I pick something else? Bearing in mind English Literature 2 is only 40 credits..

It will depend on how strict a requirement this is within your school and also how well you did in English literature. I believe 60% is required in 2nd year to progress into 3rd year of the English lit course (although don't quote me on this as it may well have changed since I was a student) so if you were to only achieve a 1st year mark in the 40s, 50s or low 60s they will likely want to ensure that you have an "insurance back up" of another subject to continue. If you do really well then this is less likely to be a worry. If you're really adamant that you only want to do English lit 2 they may well say yes but then it's on your head if you fail to get the necessary grades for year 3.

You can't do Spanish 1B next year as yes, you have already sat the same exam as the 1B students at the end of this year. Take a look at the Spanish modules though for next year as when I studied Spanish the 2nd year course had a number of cultural/film related modules which weren't really Spanish language.

As you've done 1st year sociology you will be eligible to do other courses within the social science school and also some in the history school too. When I was a student the first year sociology course made you eligible for second year social history, for example. This is an avenue you should consider if you haven't already done so.
