Can you pick a language as an outside course if you don't know anything beforehand? Specifically I'm thinking Italian, it seems to have no requirements if I'm looking at the right bit. I see French says you need Higher/A Level or whatever but Italian doesn't. Thanks!
Hi I am going to be starting a Japanese MA degree in a few weeks and I need to choose an outside course worth 40 credits from level 08 courses. I have been seriously considering this and I am very interested in studying Chinese. However the level 08 Chinese is equivalent to a full first year Chinese language degree level and it states on the courses website that "if being studied as an outside course, introduction to Chinese language is highly recommended" however that course is a level 07 course and lasts for semester 1. Would this matter? I know this course is worth 20 credits, however if I was able to take it there is a level 2 for semester 2 worth another 20 credits. And if I found I wasn't enjoying it I could study something else I'm interested in such as an Introduction to Italian worth 20 credits for semester 2. I hope this made sense and any help on if this would be possible and also opinions / personal experiences with these Chinese courses would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

if you are doing an MA in International relations and Law, is it possible to change to pure LLB or LLB in Law and International Relations?
Thanks.

This is really one for your personal tutor or teaching office, I'm afraid.

Is course X good or bad?

Look on the course reviewer here which is a list of all of the current courses offered for first years, with reviews from students over the last few years. Bear in mind some subjects might have drastically changed the content since the review was written. Some subjects are more complete than others.

Anyone knows where that course reviewer is now????

Long gone I'm afraid. It wasn't much use while it was around - it transpired people weren't interested in writing reviews. If it was available now, it would be unhelpful as reviews would be years out of date.

Does anyone know if u could hypothetically take 2 diff beginners language modules?
im v interested in the modules available in russian + scandinavian studies and i would love to take both beginner russian + danish, does anyone know if this could be possible (regardless of timetabling etc)

Timetable clashes aside, it is possible. This depends on the credit load mandated by your degree programme courses, as Danish and Russian would require 80 credits over the year - so your programme would need to require you to only take 40 credits in year 1. This might mean it wasn't possible, depending on degree title. In addition, those interested in taking two languages ab initio tend to be cautioned that it's rather hard work!

If a student fails a 20 credit outside subject in their first year of a single honours maths degree, what options are available to them to ensure progression to the 2nd year given that resitting the outside subject in August 2015 may result in another non-passing mark? Thanks.

For progress into Honours (3rd and 4th year) you'd need to have 240 credits under your belt
So my advice is to do some research into easier courses in Semester 2 or Year 2.
If this does happen then seek advice from your personal tutor

Thanks for the info.
Hi guys so basically I just got an offer to study Politics and Russian Studies (BBB) which I'm over the moon about but I was wondering if there would be at all an opportunity to take up Arabic or Persian even if that would mean dropping a subject later on? Thanks!

Definitely it is very easy to swap subjects, especially if you do well in that subject in first year.

I think so, I think you could do a joint honours but not not with three subjects. You could study all three subjects for the first two years though so you would get a feel for which you like best/feel strongest in anyhow.

Thanks this is really helpful!
I'm on a joint honours degree so I've got 40 credits for outside courses. My question is do the courses need to be from the same subject for the 40 credits, or can I choose a course from, say, economics and another from politics which worth 20 credits each? And would it be possible that both of the courses are in semester 1 (or 2)? Would the workload still be manageable in this way?

Thanks

Also, can I do year 2 courses in year 1, or vice versa?
