I know someone who did three languages in first year and dropped the third in second year. It's not impossible, but it'll be hard work.

Just to make sure I'm not being dense... Spanish and Portuguese is actually a Single Honours degree instead of a joint one because you do Portuguese as part of SpanishB, right? So, I could theoretically do two extra subjects? That messes with my mind, ha ha.

EDIT: Ah, nevermind, I get it now. Because I'm a beginner, I do Spanish A in first year, and then Portuguese in second year, so I can take two extra subjects in first and one in second. Ignore my reading fail...

Do your outside subjects have to be from the same school? So if I'm doing a Linguistics degree in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, is it possible for me to do Social Anthropology as one of my outside choices, even though it is taught in a different school?

Yep - I do Philosophy and have Scottish Lit and Religious Studies as my outsides

Excellent

Is RS good? I found it really interesting at GCSE, but it was very basic, so I don't know if Id' enjoy it at degree level?

Aslong as it's in the same college, ie HSS, then it's fine. There's some trouble with crossing colleges, but that's no problem for you.

I really enjoyed the Islam part. Judaism was good, too, but a bit more basic, and Christianity was interesting in parts (especially the lecture on Christian mission in China and Japan, and Christianity and Science) but incredibly dull in others, and the Christianity lecturer's power point presentations are terrible.
Tutorials are awkward and I'm not entirely sure what my tutor wants when it comes to tutorial sheets (I've asked but he doesn't really know what he's looking for himself, I think :s-smilie: hoping for a different tutor this semester), and each week one or two people have to do a presentation on the reading we were all supposed to do anyway which is a bit pointless imho.

Definitely not the perfect course but quite good overall, and I liked the focus on the interaction between religion and modernity.

ETA: I'm not from the England (nor from the UK) so I don't really know what you do for GCSE.

You can look at all the courses Edinburgh have to offer here: http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/

But to save you some time... http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/09-10/course.php?code=U00295 and http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/09-10/course.php?code=U00296

I do anthropology if you want to know anything, although the course has changed substantially since I took it... linguistics I can chat about though, although I believe we already have done!

We have indeed! I don't think I ever thanked you for emailing me the course stuff.... it was awesome, though, so thank you

And I suppose the main thing I want to know is is Anthropology good? Does it work well with Linguistics?

That's a great post.

I'll be starting with MolBio (second year). Would you recommend sticking to the subject area or exploring different ones? Are there any other restrictions as to what outside subject one can choose (besides timetable clashes of course)?

Another second year entry! Although I'm changing course

Hello there. You'll find that there are quite a few of direct entries around. Good luck!
If you're doing a joint honours degree...is it possible to just do more modules in either of those subjects rather than taking another subject ie. having a 40-80 split?

If more modules are offered in your subject, then obviously yes. But in many subjects this isn't the case - there is simply Linguistics 1A and Linguistics 1B which make up 40 credits between them and there simply aren't any other linguistics courses.

It seems with your course you have a spare 20 credits once you've done the compulsory ones, and you have spare music ones, meaning normally they'd let you either do another one from music or take a random outside course for a semester, it'd be a choice for you and your DoS to make in freshers week.

I did outsides from a different college - college of science and engineering when in humanities.

You just tell your DoS what you're doing and I don't believe they can/would want to stop you.

There's supposed to be a rule about class sizes, and so there is the reserved right to stop cross-college outside subjects. It's only a reserved right, it's apparently rarely used.

I was just saying if you stick within your college that rule doesn't apply, so the only thing to worry about is class time clashing.

I'm being really, really dense! But can someone please help me...

I'm studying nursing. But I don't really understand - can I take ANY other subject (obviously not things like law or medicine)? Or are there things that nursing students generally take? Because I have no idea what I'd want to study, my only other interest is Geography but that isn't very relevant (does that even matter?) plus it is probably taught somewhere totally different. I suppose I'll have to choose something close to the School of Health...what is?!

This whole outside subject thing has totally bamboozled my mind!

In first year and second year you have 40 credits per year of outside courses. These can theoretically be taken from any school, although in reality you'll be limited to stuff that doesn't clash with your nursing timetable. You'll have to speak to your DoS about it all. For more information on how to look up outside courses see the OP of this thread.

Don't know how helpful this is but I know somebody who did nursing and she did History of Medicine as an outside course. It's a history course but obviously it's relevant to nursing too (plus it sounded really interesting, from what she told me).
