Bernard Myers House/Julian Markham - any experiences?

Those are my top two choices for accomodation (I'll be studying at Camberwell) and am just looking for some opinions about them, maybe from people who have/are staying there?

I havnt stayed at either but I want to apply next year and Julian Markhma Will be one of my choices
It doesnt look so great on the outside, but it's in a nice area, just outside of camberwell, and it had good facilities.

Bernad Myers looks well nice on the outside! But the location isn't so good. I know its close to the college. But If i went to Camberwell, I WOULDNT live IN Camberwell! Its rough AND dangerous!

Julian Markham is MUCH closer to central lodon. Think about the taxi fair after a night out. MUCH cheaper!

I would chose Julain Markham. Have you not made a third choice?

What course you taking?

They've already sent me that book in the pdf to make my choices. I was just looking for students opinions really. My third is Brooke House (or something like that!) but I wouldn't really want that one.
I'm taking BA Photography, I think I'm definitely going to put Julian Markham as my choice 1!
Maybe I'm just spreading rumours or something since I haven't actually been to the area, but when I was picking halls, this link kind of put me off Bernard Myers house:

I know it just the opinion of a few people...but they all seem to be saying the same thing, and personally I wouldn't want to take my chances.

I heard that a few of the halls are targeted by thieves, and that link just kinda fortified my views of the accomodation.. i've sent my application "just in case" and i've basically applied for the cheapest ones... if I don't get a place i'll be "house sharing" with friends who are going to LCF and also a guy I know who is doing BA Photography also  can't wait to start in September, hopefully it comes quickly haha

Yeah! I really wanted to get a house share with some of my friends that are going to Camberwell too, but they're all wanting to go in halls so I don't have a choice really! I sent off my form today with Julian Markham as my 1st, Manna Ash as my 2nd and Bernard Myers as my 3rd. I hope they tell us quickly!

I figured i'd just apply for halls as that way I know I have something as a back up if the house share plan goes out of the window haha! I hope we find out soon too, that way I can decide what i'm gona do!

thats what i was worried about, crime. if i decide not to live in halls i'll either be staying at home or in plaistow and i dont really trust plaistow at night but i dont want to stay home either haha! its gonna be a hard decision for me
ive been given julian markham house as my halls even though it wasnt one of my choices anyone no what its like in that area heard its a bit rough ?
thanks victoria
Been to and stayed at the majority of the Halls mentioned in this thread for at least a night, and live in private accommodation very near by julian markham and go to uni at lcc. Honestly, there's nothing to worry about at all.

By the end of the year you'll probably find yourselves completely enamoured with parts of South East London, especially if you go to camberwell...these places aren't beautiful middle class suburbs but I've really never heard of anyone actually getting mugged, robbed or stabbed or certain halls being targeted by thieves.

I lived in Bernard Myers House for my duration of my first year of university (which was 3months). I commuted to Wimbledon College of Art each day from the place.

I shall write out a list of the pros and cons of my time in that property (before I transferred to a different one) as it will be easier for you all to read and understand, instead of me writing out long-winded sentences.

Pros:

Nice room, good storage facilites.
The room was in a nice pod.
The kitchen was nice, spacious and had good storage facilities.
The postal system was quite good.
The security system was very good.
There was a small coscutter supermarket just round the corner from the Halls, as well as 24hour off-licence.
Very good bike storage!

Cons:

The storage facilities in the room were under the bed, at the end of the bed, under the desk and the wardrobe. Wardrobe was good as it was a proper wooden one. However, the under the bed storage was, despite being a good idea, AWKWARD. You had to lift your matress up (which isn't exactly light), and then lift up 2 rather heavy wooden boards and rest them against the matress in order to be able to place or remove things from under the bed.

End of the bed storage was okay, but not great. as the space was about 4 foot long, and about 2 1/2 foot deep, but only about a foot wide, so that proved hard to place much more than laptop bags, cushions etc. down there.

Under the desk storage wasn't bad as there was alot of space lengthways and it was about 3 1/2 ft high or so, which meant a good amount of height for a suitcase or something. (I personally brought my own small fridge from home which fitted nicely under a part of my desk.) The problem with that area of storage was though, it wasn't very ideal once you started getting loads of stuff to bring home from uni.

The transport system for that area, is to be honest, crap. The nearest bus stop is about a 2 minute walk round the corner from the halls, but there is only 1 bus service that goes from it (343) and it is never on time. It's every 5-10 minutes til a certain time, then from that time til 10 at night it's 8-12 minutes, then it goes back to the every 5-10 minutes; however, from personal experience I have found it is usually every 15minutes at the best of times.

You can walk to Camberwell Green and pick up various routes from there into Central London, but it's not the sort of place you want to be wandering around in at night in all honesty. The nearest tube station is Elephant and Castle which is a good 10/15minutes bus journey away (traffic permitting though!). E&C is probably also the closest station with a British Rail connection too. Either there or Denmark Hill Rail, which is up the road from Camberwell Green.

Bernard Myers House itself though, has no common room at all. So unless you're at the same college as people, the chances of you getting to meet and socialise with people outside of your pod aren't great. (I speak here from personal experience). The Halls is primarily used by students studying at Camberwell College of Art or LCC (London College of Communication in Elephant and Castle) but the odd student from LCF (London College of Fashion), WCA (Wimbledon College of Art) and CSMCAD (Central St. Martins College of Art & Design) use it as well.

The property itself is located right opposite a large and very grim looking council estate, which most people avoid cutting through at night, even if it means adding an extra 5/10minutes onto their journey.

BMH is one long building, but split into 4 blocks, A-D. Each block has it's own post boxes on the ground floor - 1 for each flat in the block. Good system, however, there are 4 floors in 3 of the blocks (I can't remember about Block A, because it was the reception one and was structured slightly differently) but there is no lift in any of them. It is just one large staircase that goes to each floor, but with a landing after each flight.

This makes moving into your flat at the start of your tennancy their and moving out of it at the end of your tennancy rather strenuous, difficult and exhausting. As does going down to get your post and then trapsing back up to your flat (if you're on the 2nd floor or above). Now, I was on the top floor of my block, in the last flat and I moved in on my own as my parents had had to drop me off with all my stuff and rush off to a friends wedding.

As you can imagine, going up and down a dozen flights of stairs with heavy luggage, a small fridge, a tv etc. wasn't exactly an easy task, even when a few of the lads in the flat below me came and gave me a hand, it still took an age.

I raised the question, "what if someone had an accident and wound up in a wheelchair, but lived on the top floor of their block?", to which I was answered "Well that's not likely to happen now is it? If it did however, then we'd cross that bridge when we came to it."

My final "con" about Bernard Myers House, is that the showers aren't particularly powerful, nor is the head that wide on it.

If there is anything else you would like to know about this place please feel free to contact me with your questions and I shall be happy to answer them as best I can .

Harry,

Hi i'm starting at CCW, i found your post really informative, the best of all i've read so far. I'm moving into Bernard Myers in late August, i just wanted to know if you had any photos of the facilities, of your flat? the websites are all so limited  Also do you know if there are open days? I've not actually been round for a look? Thanks, Ava
Did you by any chance stay in victoria hall?
