For me I was way off the needed grades, I still got in, and my course was over subscribed that year. But I went travelling in my gap year, and wrote my personal statement myself, so I think my application may have stood out a bit?

I was told that (for the economics department at least) they have way too many people applying, so they're going to get stricter on admissions. Also I think Portsmouth is the most improved uni in the country in terms of people applying (ie. percentage increase in numbers applying), but of course it all depends on your individual department.

yay another doing maths, add my msn
i was offered 3 C's too and i think 240 points is what ill get, no idea how strict they are on grades for maths though

Mm, I have a friend who is just finishing his 2nd year of Maths and knows people who got a D in A Level Maths despite needing CCC. And you'd think they'd be stricter about missing the grade for Maths than anything else.

So I'd say probably not TOO bad but then, we don't know what's happened this year. There might have been a lot more applications than usual, they might have made too many offers. The best thing to do is put the revision in and get the grades. :P
When I called Portsmouth not so long ago to ask about missing my offer - I HATE politics with a passion  - the woman said not too worry too much, as I've firmed them, and they obviously want me as I have an offer.

I wouldn't worry too much, there's always ways around it
well when i went to the biological sciences open day in feb, we were told that cos of the crisis, the government has capped how many people uni's are allowed to admit in, cos of the finance and what-not, and we were told that if we didnt make the grades then there would be a high probability that we couldnt get in.. whereas before if you missed the grade by a few points then you could still get in, but from what they said .. if you don't make the grade then it will be harder to get in :s-smilie: :frown: which kinda sucks!

ive got them down as my 2nd choice, is that likely to affect them offering me a place if i just miss the grades?? (i only ask cause i had a really bad exam today which might just screw up my chances)

also does anyone know the odds of getting accomadation in halls if you put it as your 2nd choice?

btw my offer was BBC for history

hope i got the right section :s-smilie:

I think you need to put the uni as your firm choice to be guarenteed a dorm. And have applied before a certain time as well.

No chance in getting halls accomodation, even those who put it as a firm aren't guarenteed.
Well I have circumstances that meant my tutor felt the need to step in and write a note to Portsmouth to explain that it's quite possible I wont meet my offer. However as my tutor and HE advisor explained - it's up to the university how much lenient and how much notice they take of it. So they could smile and be like ' we'll still offer you a place regardless' and I'll find this out on results day or I could end up not going Portsmouth this year. I'm just going to try my best and wait and see it's all you really can do!

hey, I have been offered a conditional place at the uni for accounting where you need 300 ucas points to get in. However, this is my 3rd year at college and as well as my A-levels I am also taking AAT accounting level 3. The condition for me to get in is to pass the AAT course even though I have already got 2 b's at a-level (including accounting) and doing another one this year where I will get a B/C grade. AAT is either pass or fail all the exams, there is no inbetween, and I am pretty sure i'm going to fail two of them, so do you think they would still let me in with the a-level grades? The conditions from my insurance offer from bournemouth said I had to either pass the AAT course or get the 300 ucas points.....

well I had glandular fever during my exams, even when to hospital so my grades are going to suffer I think..

I need BBB and my predicted grades are ABB but i think I could possibly looking at BBC (totally bailed C4 maths and biology practical because i felt so awful)

I've applied to do pharmacy and I'm worried I'm not getting in. I'm volunteering in Africa in the summer so wont be able to go into clearing and am a third year at college (i did art 1st year for some unknown reason)

It all very scary when you cant gauge how youve done! :frown: xxx

Hello! Sorry to here you had gladular fever over your exams, I had it earlier this year and wasn't able to shake it off for months! So i know how rough you must have felt..

Bearing that in mind, you must contact Portsmouth sooner rather than later to let them know your situation :] Better for them to know you were ill before they get your results, you'll prob have to get a doctors note for proof, but thats just a technical thing

Due to certain circumstances my friend ended up only passing one of his A-levels and one AS-level and he still got into portsmouth fine :] he was on first name terms with the admin people.. lol

So really, just call them direct as soon as you can :]

Hope this is helpful! Good Luck!!

P.S.
I did C4 Maths (OCR) & if this was the paper you sat, everyone at my school found it particulary hard (I go to a Grammar School so everyone, except me :|, are geniuses!). Plus there was a thread on here saying that everyone found it difficult and a teacher advised in the thread that the exam board would probably lower the grade boundaries :]
