Irlen Syndrome/ coloured lens

good day,

i have recently been identified to have irlen syndrome , which is like dyslexical but more to do with lack of concentration and is based on the eyes.

I have to have coloured green lens

I was wondering if anyone else has irlen syndrome thingy and if the glasses are really worth it?
Did you have to pay alot of money and do you look like across bewteen elton john and a complete dork?

much obliged

i just have a piece of pink see through paper which i put over work and my exam papers are printed on light pink paper because i find it easier to read then on white paper.
i did get offered the glasses, but this sounds really bad, im just too vain and i find the pink paper works fine for me

hmm I sound like I hypocondriac(which is why I never go to the docs) but I have been told im dyselxic and dyspraxic but I have a thing about depression and light(I.e S.A.D.S IMO)

But it may be colour as I struggle to play modern computer games as they have dark colours and boom boom boom music and find playing old SNES games that are colourful better.

Heya!

I got diagnosed a couple of months ago.

Firstly, you can order special coloured pads of paper (Pukka Pads are fab for this XD)

You can also get sheets of perspex to go over paper, like an overlay. That's pretty good.

Also, depending on yourself and how serious you are, you can get special glasses. These are sooo expensive though, so I decided that it wasn't worth it for me.

Erm, you can also request all of your exam papers in whatever colour suits you best. You'd have to talk to you student support people for this.

Good luck, and pm me if you need any more help or stuff xx

I don't have personal experience with this, but I know two people in my year didn't get the glasses (felt that they were too expensive) but got coloured overlays for reading and coloured paper instead.

It sounds like you should go see a screener for Irlen. Theres a website that you can visit to find out more, but the colours bothering you sounds very similar to what I had. It isn't picked up by normal tests, cause its to do with the scoptic nerve, not with the eyes XD

Howdy, thanks for your help i didn't know you could get pads
the teacher at my school is completely addicted to getting me tinted lens, i had a suspension they were expensive because when ever i started talking about it she would start talking about her baby she is pretty mental.

she booked me a appointment next week to get some ah!

what colour are you...i'm light green.. um one more thing i was wondering can you close your left eye just by itself?

I'm really dark blue, I have to have two overlays.

I can close both eyes independently.

You can just ask to be analysed. Who are you being screened for the tests by? There's one coming to our college very soon, I think, but I live in deepest darkest Essex x

I found this website really useful.

http://www.irlenuk.com/

Also, with the glasses, they aren't avaliable on the NHS. I've been getting on absolutely fine with the overlays, and what with all the work being photocopied onto royal blue paper, I'm coping fine. Make sure you don't feel pressured into getting the glasses, as some people also find that their colour changes xx

I just realised that my DSA assessment recommended me seeing this specialist eye place and gives me £170 for special tinted lenses ansd £40 for a frame so maybe they do think that.

i have irlen syndrome. i have a blue-grey overlay. and dark grey glasses (i bought the frames and lenses - dsa paid for the tinting) i am supposed to wear them all the time, but in reality i rarely ever wear them. except for reading etc at home. they are really helpful tho so i would like to wear them all the time

erm i am off to work now. feel free to pm me about it if u want, and i will reply at the weekend properly.

dsa=disabled students allowance... something you can claim at uni.
i'm training to be a teacher so although i was told to wear them all the time, i never do. when i do wear them eg working at home in the evening, they do help me focus yes, since many of my symptoms disapear: eg headaches sleepness etc. when i look at a black and white page, i see "rivers" down the page. with the specs these just about disapear. i still cant read for very long at a time, because i need to practice getting used to that really, since i've avoided reading to such a huge extent till now, to somehow subconciously "protect" myself from my difficulties in a way.

the colour of my glasses was specifically found, after a long session of testing. it is not the same colour as the overlay i use. (most people have a very different colour in their glasses). it filters out a lot of the red spectrum of light i think, the red wavelengths (something like that), because this is the part of light i have problems with. this means my brain can handle it better and cuts out my problems. but when i look through my coloured lenses, the page looks the same colour, as do my surroundings. white is still white. just the glare has been cut out.

being able to close one eye at a time is not related to irlen suyndrome i dont think. just co0ordination.

i am guessing you are still at high school or college?

when you look at a page of black and white writing, what do you see?
