You can still get a job with a 3rd class degree, right?

OK so, my dad went to Bristol, got a high 2.i, went to work in Africa and when he came back got a scholarship that payed for all his MBA at LBS... But that was 30 years ago, so do graduates still get scholarship easly with a 2.i or now would they need a 1st?

It depends. Scientists find it much easier to get funding - they're normally fine with a high 2.i. Artists would need a 1. :frown:

So to summarise, it doesn't count towards any other mark other than your part IA---IB and II are entirely independent. But it does matter.

But it matters to your overall degree... since in Cambridge you don't get an overall degree result (just marks for each of your years) the results from each year should be declared on any CV, etc. This causes interesting problems for lawyers, for instance, who need a 2.2 degree to qualify -- since we don't get a degree result, the Bar Council/Law Society look at the last two years of results... so a very bad idea to get a 3 in your second year (even if you gets 1s in the 1st and 3rd year)!

Also, regarding 1*, you need a 75% average to get a 1* overall (which is bloody hard) or 80% in an individual paper to get a 1* in that single paper.

If only that system was in place for Engineering

But most people actually only quote their part II classification since most employers don't know or care about the tripos system---they're interested in your most recent classification. So it doesn't specifically count, because as you say there is nothing to count towards. As with everything Cambridge, it's all conventions.

It certainly matters though! Wish I hadn't got a 2.2 in the first year!
