Citalopram And Impotence

I've recently gone on Citalopram and if anything I maybe feel a bit less irritable and depressed than I did - still 5 days is not much to go on. However the one thing that has changed and it happened immediately - is that my libido seems to have disappeared. I can manage to get an erection if I really try, but reaching orgasm is virtually impossible.

Doing some internet reading, it appears that sexual dysfunction is very common with SSRIs but in most cases it is believed to stop once you finish taking the pills. Does any other guys have this type of experience, particularly if you've been on an SSRI for quite a long time.
Well, I'm a girl buuut...
If it's affecting your life, go see your doctor, sometimes they can add on other pills, or change the SSRI or type of AD. Leave it a month or two at first, because sometimes it's just your body adjusting to it.
I've had the same kinda thing, and tbh, when I was on Celexa, I just came off it for a day or two at a time if ever I wanted to have sex/orgasm.

Best wishes
Also, congrats for getting the help and getting on the pills

yeah unfortunately thats a common side effect. I have a male friend on citalopram who has the same problem, but it kind of wore off after a while. It had a negative effect on my libido too, but it did pick up after a month or so, a little.
Give it some time, but if after a few weeks you feel that it's interfering too much, go back to the doctor and explain. They'll change your medication in most cases

The thing is, if the medication is effective I don't really want to change it. I have to wait and see on that front as it's supposed to take a few weeks to work. Obviously if the pills don't work, it's an easy answer. Otherwise I'll have to make a decision.

You might find that as your body gets used to the medication, this particular effect wears off a bit. I mean, citalopram alters the way your brain works effectively, so its inevitible that it will take a while, but once your used to it everything does seem to settle down again

Hope it works for you anyway
Dude, hard luck. I'm on 20mg of Citalopram, have been for 6 months now, and my sex drive dried up within a week. I don't have much problem getting it up, but like you say, reaching orgasm is virtually impossible. I mentioned it to my GP, he said it was a common side effect in men, and that it'd go away after I came off them. Luckily, I have a very understanding girlfriend, and so I just put up with it.

In terms of having an anti-depressant effect, I found that it took well over a month for my mood to pick up. My advice would be to stick with it, it's not forever, and know that you're not the only one with the problem, so no need to feel embarrased

I have the same problem. Can I buy Citatopram without prescription?

Not as far as I'm aware.
Common side effect, i was on citalopram and my libido vanished, however if its an issue (and by the sound of it it is!) mention it to your GP, i've had mine changed to Trazodone as it is less likely to mess up my libido! Basically there are a fair few antidepressents out there, so if one doesn't work (or is intrferring too much) you can always change

(though you probably won't want to be on trazodone as it can cause in rare cases, priapism, a prolonged and painful penile erection which requires surgey to treat!)

I hate to tell you this, but I've been off medication for 6 months and my sex drive isn't what it used to be. I'm only in my twenties. It's depressing.

May be a different case for me, because I had around 6 different anti-depressants thrown at me, and had to take two anti psychotics.

It's better than it was 6 months ago.. but I just hope it goes back to normal eventually.

Dunno about erections cos i'm a girl but after i went on citalopram my sex drive went AWOL for a few weeks. It did come back, so hopefully yours will too.
I've been on Citalopram 20mg for 5 weeks.
Before having citalopram, I used to try and achieve an orgasm once a day. Things were so bad, that having an orgasm was the only thing that made me feel slightly happy and release all those happy chemicals in your body. It was like natures own little anti depressant. It would also make me very exhausted so I'd fall asleep easier instead of staying awake in bed crying my eyes out.
The day I started citalopram I got a very dry mouth and it took slightly longer to reach orgasm.
5 weeks later and now I still feel the urge to masturbate, because I want to feel that happiness again. I can get an erection, but doing anything with it feels more painful than anything and I'll lose it. If I persist at it and carry on for a very long time (30+ minutes) I'll eventually get one but it is the most unsatisfying orgasm and it will leave me disappointed.

To be honest, I just wish citalopram actually worked so I'd feel a bit happier so I wouldn't have to resort to masturbation as my only source of happiness. So far, its just a load of side effects that aren't worth it.

Mine's a bit similar to yours, and i cant seem to get any help anywhere. I never had been to the doctor that much. I am a father of two, 25 and the eldest is 28 so I know that I am not fertility challenged. I have been married for 26 years and we never had this issues before. Lately (at 45), I have not been functioning properly in bed. I always had high libido and I don't see where this is coming from. I've been looking around lately and have read about "andropause." You can google that, or go here: http://testosterone-for-men.com/Andropause-testosterone.php > That's a brief description of what I believe I am going through. I have erectile dysfunction, I am always depressed, I eat more than usual, I have trouble sleeping and I easily get irritated. In short, I am a nightmare to live with. I'm not so sure what the next step is yet but I would be searching for the solution. With what I understand, this illness is like the male counterpart of menopause. I hope to get well soon as this is turning out to be a big problem already.

Sexual dysfunction is very common in us guys. I was on 20mg of Citalopram 2 years ago and shortly after I noticed a drop in libido and an inability to reach orgasm, I could be there for hours with my girlfriend. It's like one of those dreams where you're running down a corridor towards a door and no matter how fast you run the door remains unreachable, it's like a switch that goes off in your head. After coming off, things did improve though : ) Unfortunately I'm now back on 20mg Citalopram due to Health Anxiety and I've noticed the same things, not so much a drop in libido, but the inability to maintain an erection and reach orgasm. I have resorted to Viagra, and although great for maintaining erection, the orgasm still remains illusive and even when I do manage to have one it's disappointing especially considering the amount of effort and time you have to put in. I am 51 and have a very understanding girlfriend. Doctors should highlight this side effect verbally and not dish Citalopram out like sweets.
