I got a C in one of my AS's, and have an offer from Oxford

This made me laugh  especially as I only have 2. Maybe my offer was in error...

I don't have any, and I only have 1 A.

That said, had my philosophy synoptic today and as a result probably won't be seeing you guys in October.

i just got news that my friend's bro got rejected from cambridge medicine with the reason that his average ( 92%) was not high enough as last yr's candidates had an average of 96%... this is getting more and more worrying... 87-90 was already bad enough and now 96...

I'm sure that I heard that they've included a space for them on the newest application form (i.e. the paper one, not necessarily UCAS).

There is indeed a space, but you don't have to fill it in.

Hang on... do you mean to say that Cambridge have reintroduced the CAF?

They never got rid of it.
Generally I find that AS levels are too easy not to get super high marks in, if you're Oxbridge material. And even if you make a few careless mistakes you can still get 100%. Some papers have conversions such as 85% raw ----- > 100% UMS.

So while the difference is minimal between 90% and 85%, I do struggle to see why top candidates would lose that many marks in the first place, unless if they didn't work hard enough.

I'm pretty sure they did, because Oxford did at about the same time...

Ah right, I'd always thought that Oxford got rid of it but Cambridge kept it.

(1) have you read the thread?
(2) why are you acting as though your life's on the line?
(3) I find it quite convenient that you 'just got news' of it considering offers/rejections took place over 5 months ago.
(4) People never trust a 'friend of a friend'/'sibling of a friend' scenario.

What do they care about?

Probably nothing.

At a conference about this at Haydock I was told by one of them that the AVERAGE module score for entrants is 87%. Sounds a bit iffy to me but that's what they said. Either way, Oxford don't see your mark.

Standards are dropping.

Dont know about applying at cambridge and all that but...
my mate has got a offer for law at cambridge and his offer says: atleast 90% in each subject. :yep: saw it on track myself
maybe he was 'ok' at the interview thats why his offer is so high

wow, even the standards in cambridge have slipped...

Load of crap (87% to 90%). Apply by all means if you get an A overall, that is what they care. AN A IS AN A. Only places like Hong Kong look at the bloody scores which I think is ridiculous

only place with common sense?

I know, what a pile of crap - getting rid of it.

I'm not surprised by this fact. Especially if it's only 3 A-levels.... it isn't particularly hard to get high %s if you only do 3...

Actually Cambridge got rid of the CAF first (although they've still got a Supplementary Application Questionnaire which contains most of the information which used to go on the CAF, I think). Oxford dropped the OAF shortly afterwards, though.

This is true. The Cambridge SAQ has all the grade questions.

So, in fact, they just renamed it?

I believe the SAQ is an online questionnaire, whereas the CAF was just a paper form.

I think they got rid of the CAF in the interests of simplicity (supposedly to put fewer "disadvantaged" students off applying) rather than because they didn't need the information. One form is easier to complete than two.

No, the SAQ and CAF have both been around for a while - I had to do both.

BTW, I got a D in two modules, but I'm sitting here in Cambridge now...I probably should be working...

(1)yes i have read the thread bt i just wanted to add this news is cos i believe there are people out there who are reading this thread not to reply to it but for more information for referencing
2) i dont know how u inferred that but to me, it is a life changing decision ( university choosing and all). and if u were like me, someone who left ur own country to come to uk specially to get used to the uk system to make a sound choice for UK UNIVERSITY, perhaps u might understand my anxiety abit more.
3) i dont know why am i explaining to u how i found out but anyway it is only recently that the mates around me are talking about oxbridge, since university applications are starting only in july, and i didn't go round enquiring about oxbridge till only recently ( that is sorta a fault on my side i guess) and i believe 1-2 days is sorta more JUST than SiNCE FOREVER
4)in this case, the person's brother AND the teachers in the school mentioned it( there are only about 3-4 people in my sch going to oxbridge every year outta 60 in the level..so basically it is quite a well known news in such a small community) so i do believe it.
