A warning to everyone applying to do Optometry starting September 06.

City and Manchester have raised grades from ABB to AAB.

APU and Glasgow have raised grades from BBB to ABB.

Its gonna be tough next year peeps! But still apply cos Optometry is blatantly the greatest!

Manchester have not increased grades to AAB, I'm talking out of my arse again. Sorry for frightening people hoping to go to Manchester!

They're tough anyway! lol But I will give it my best shot - and if I dont get the grades, I still have other options. But optometry sounds cool. I've just started working in an opticians and am really enjoying it!

Definiately still apply, Can't you get just like a day or something watching an optom. Ask one, I'm sure they'd be happy to run through the tests and stuff with you.

i got into everywhere i applied except glasgow - i got ABB at AS LEVEL in phys maths and chemistry .
i applied to - aston , APU , CITY , CARDIFF , GLASGOW CALEDOWNIAN, bradford
and APU is my insurance and Aston my First choice.
i got a job with the local univeristys clinical supervisor (sheer luck) and i think that helped me along.
i failed my AS levels first time around - and i dont think anyone really minded.

I was speaking to different people about Optometry.
Is it true that once youve qualified its really difficult to find a job as an optician?

Also, people have said that the salary for an optician is quite low..is this true?
typically, what is the starting salary of an optician who has just qualifiied (i.e. 3 yr course + 1 yr expeerience) ?
I was quoted as low as £16,000 - £18,000 - can this be true?

On the whole, if someone is not keen on medicine/dentistry, who would say that Optometry is quite a good career?

its same sort of carrer status as a pharmacist, but its quite hard to get into, its bassicaly as hard as medecine offers go from AAB to ABB soo they are very high!

i was just wondering y would anyone do optomery? (common u can't seriously make me belive that u find it interesting)

y do optomery as opposed to dentistry?
they are both equally boring jobs, except dentists get paid much more.

is it because u feel that u'r gcse grades limit u?

no optometry requires no chemistry thats y i did it, if i did chemistry id deffo have applied to dentistry or med. i do Bio and Physics tho therefore optometry was the option.

i think there is less responsibility with optometry.

Dentistry is academically more difficult.

whats the starting salary for an optician? (just qualified)
and is it hard to find a job as an optician?
I'm about to start my optometry degree, and already have a pre-reg offer from a leading optical franchise as i work there as an optical assistant at the moment.

Starting salaries are not as low as that, they're generally around £25k, and it depends on where you work.

Optometry is actually really interesting, if you'd read much about it and thoroughly researched into the possiblities, you'd find that the career is much more varied than just testing eyes in a darkened room.

Yes it can be hard to find a job, but get your foot in the door somewhere early (like I have) and you should be okay.

Optometry is very interesting, why do you think it's boring? Which aspects of the course do you dislike?

Optometry may have a declining salary, but when the decline does eventually become stable, the average salaries will still be a comfortable one.

hi everyone...

found this website recently:

www.muslimoptician.net

its aimed at muslims...but has excellent resources...esp for students..and pre-reg's....and fairly active forums!

i'd recommend it to anyone...muslim or non-muslim who are studying optometry!

I've just completed my first year at Bristol University studying Physics but I've decided I would really like to be an optician. I don't know whether it's something I could as a postgraduate course after I finish my degree or whether I should try and change courses now? Are there any optometry students that could offer some advice?
I would like to finish my degree at Bristol but don't really enjoy the sound of another 3 years study on top of what I already have!! If that was the only option though I think I'd consider it.
Looking at UCAS there don't seemed to be that many Universities that offer courses.
