Paramedic Practice at Uclan

Hello all!! I have just recieved a letter through the post asking me to attend an interview and fitness test :woo:

I was just wondering does every applicant get the chance to attend one of these or do some get rejected without the chance of an interview? Im just trying to work out if I have a good chance of getting on the course or not!!

Also, any interview tips would be useful...anyone else attending on Friday 19th June?

Cheers, Matt.

hey, i was going to apply for the paramedic degree until i found out uclan dont do it anymore. So i went onto the Adult Nursing instead. do you know if i transferred onto the paramedic diploma for 2010 intake i could go straight into the second year? as im pretty sure most of the modules will be similar.

For UCLan you will first do a driving theory test, if you pass that then they do your blood pressure and work out 80% of your max heart rate. You will then do either the driving test or the fitness test and then swap to do the other, if you fail either one then your out. If you pass all of that then you'll go onto the interview. Can't really help you with what UCLan ask at interview but I'm sure it'll include the basic why paramedic, why you kind of questions.

Well on the driving theory quite a few people failed. Just make sure you know road signs and stopping distances and you should be ok. I believe you have to get 75% right.
Driving is ok. You'll probably do it in a fast response car. Just remember that its an estate and so you have to take corners a bit wider than in a smaller car.
Fitness (unless they've changed it and if I can remember correctly) was stepping up and down 2 steps to a beat that increases in speed stopping when you HR reaches 70% max. 2 minute rest then 2 minutes up and down a step with a 10kg bag. 2 minutes CPR then 2 minutes up and down the 2 steps with two 15kg weights.
If you have a reasonable level of fitness you should be ok. If your worried then I'd maybe get two 15kg weights and just run up and down the stairs a few times a day with them.

So if your application is accepted before you even have a interview you are given a fast response ambulance vehicle to drive and then a theory test?

And (Although I know CPR) they expect you to do that and all the other stuff, they dont expect much  !

Im also guessing you need C1 and D1 on your license then?
Yeah. I think its their way of wittling down the huge number of applicants they get. And to be fair its not that much as if you were going a trust route you'd have to do that and more.

Also you don't need C1 and D1. In England trusts only ask for C1 (Wales and Scotland still ask for D1) and I believe you do C1 as part of the course although that may have changed. When I did the selection I'd only passed my car driving test 2 weeks before!

Are you in UCLAN now?

Is the course good, any tips for my PS?

Also I have a D in maths ''/ that is my only problem for the whole course lol!
No I'm at Northampton.
PS tips I'd just say make sure you sell yourself and include anything where you hold a position of responsibility, hobbies etc.
And unless the courses you are applying for require more than a D in maths I shouldn't see it being a problem. If they do then maybe taking a gap year and doing an evening class GCSE maths would be a good idea.
ive recieved an invite to seleciton day, and it doesnt mention anything about a theory test. Only reference in letter to driving is that you need to bring proof that you have obtained your driving license.

anybody else attending the seleciton day on 26th feb

I was just told that my application for the paramedic course was unsuccessful as my personal statement didnt show enough commitment. What kind of things did you put in your personal statement? Do you all have relevant experience in healthcare?
I have also applied for the adult nursing course and am yet to hear from them but am feelin disheartened and that my personal statement is too crap to get me in!

Does anybody know how many places are on the adult nursing course? There are only 20 places for the paramedic one and 800 applicants!
Also, as I already have a degree I will not be eligable for student finance, does anybody know if you get a bursary on the adult nursing course? I live with my parents but pay rent and my own way and I know i cant use them for financial support this time around.
HELP!

It is very difficult to get onto paramedic courses. When I wrote my personal statement a few years ago I put a load of stuff about doing first aid and army cadets and gaining qualifications in my own time and stuff. You have to sound really passionate about it and maybe because you were also applying for nursing your statement wasn't focused enough. One question asked in quite a lot of interviews is why a paramedic instead of a nurse etc.
I couldn't tell you how many places there are on the nursing course but I expect they are easier to get on as a lot more unis run the course. On a nursing course you would get a bursary from the NHS the amount being dependant one whether your doing a DipHE or BSc and possibly on income.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I guess you're right. I did write about first aid training in the army cadets and how I have worked in a hospital on reception but was trying not to be specific. Dumb idea!

I have just had another look at the adult nursing course and it has a 'means tested bursary'. Although I live at home, I am 23 and cant be expected to put my parents income down like I did when I was 18 surely? Whose income would it go off as I myself would have no income whilst studying. Confusing?!?! :eek3:
