Is it noisy in Oadby Village?

Hey Everyone

I'm a year one International student and will come to Leicester in autumn
Now I need to choose an accommodation, but seems pretty hard.

I see alot of freshers prefer to live in Oadby, but I'm not sure whether the sound insulation in oadby village is good? Is it easily to hear what your neighbor doing next your room? I firstly want to choose Opal court but almost everyone live there told me it is very noisy...I'm an early bird and cant sleep very late, if there is easy to hear your neigbhour that will make me crazy..

Now I'm looking forward Nixon court or some place in Oadby village..

Anyone can give me some advice?

Thanks~
Opal is loud because the walls are paper thin, you can literally hear the conversations going on in the room next door word for word. I visited my friend who lives there and was shocked at how thin the walls were.

Oadby can be noisy depending on where you stay. In the first year I lived in the John Foster pavillions in one of the ones next to the main entrance to the site- so naturally everyone who came back from a night out used to have to walk past my window- as such very noisy.

Other ones set further back though apparently had little problem with that. Around the houses and places like the coppice it generally isnt overly noisy, but it'll all depend who your neighbours are. On the whole where I live now is very quiet, apart from the fact that I live near someone who likes to blast loud music frequently. Oh the joys of student life.

Is it easily hear your neigbour when they are taking shower or playing music?
I heard in Opal court you can hear clearly what they are doing, even they go to washroom, take shower, etc....
I cant fall asleep if I can hear the sound....

In Opal I think you can hear a lot.
From my experience of the student village, as long as you have neighbours who are vaguely respectful of your wishes, you won't be able to hear their music. The very few times I could it's because they had it on extremely loud, and even then when I asked they turned it down.
Taking showers - I had an ensuite room in Bowder Court (GMS) and could only hear the noise from other people's bathrooms when I was in my bathroom, so again, that's not really a problem. In the places I saw with shared bathrooms, the bathrooms were mostly on the opposite side/other end of the corridor to the rooms so I don't think they would cause much issues.
I also need it very quiet to get to sleep/stay asleep, the only big problems I had were during the summer when I wanted to have my window open at night, my room was next to one of the main paths in GMS so I kept being woken up by people coming home drunk... but superdrug sells some nice cheap foam earplugs which worked really well, that's what I'd suggest because even with the best possible housemates it's sometimes inevitable that there will be some noise... especially in freshers!
Stay the hell away from Opal Hellhole if you don't want to be woken up at ungodly hours

So which hall should I choose? John Foster? Beaumont hall or the Gilbert murray?

I know John foster is pretty good but seems a little hard to apply....
How about Beaumont and Gilbert compared to Nixon?

Beacuse Oadby is far away from campus and city centre... I think it may be a little inconvenient...

I've applied to Beaumont because apparently it's quite quiet and relaxed, in some very beautiful botanical gardens.

When I went on the open day a bus journey between Oadby student village and the campus took no more than 10 minutes.

Apparently on foot if you're quick you can do it in 30, a bicycle even less.

And How about Beaumont inside? How many people share one flat/kitchen?

emmmm, and what about the sound insulation there?

In blocks 6 and 7 ca.40 people with 2 kitchens.
block 8 is 80 peopel i guess?

student halls generally are not very sound proof, no matter what halls.
Insulation at Opal was wafer thin. Stamford and GM may not have been perfect but tranquil in comparison.

Roughly yeah, in term of sound, you can hear more above you than you can of people next to you so I think the internal walls must be thicker or something. Right now all I can hear is a few cars going down Glebe road, birds and a friend down the corridors music. It honestly doesn't get that noisy but there'll always be a few nights when there's loads of people it room near you making lots of noise.

i got most of the poeple commign back at night around my windows so it gets quite loud, but mostly that doesn't bother me. its when theres drunk people in the corridor shouting and banging doors 3 am, people shouting about next door like mad or people blasting music in several rooms at full volume with subwoofers on... thats when it gets annoying.
but good sound insulation doesn't help agaisnt that either.

emmmm actually it based on your luck whether you can meet a "good" roommate```Good luck to everyone~

John Foster is good for not hearing your neighbours! But if you are on the "main" strip it can be noisy if your windows are open (which is nearly ALL year round as it's boiling all the time due to major insulation!) and people come back from nights out. Other than that though, John Foster is definitely good.

Otherwise.. Beaumont.
