Student Loan for Maintenance for EU students

Hello everybody,

I have just finished filling my EU9N form for 2009/10 academic year for EU Students, and there was a possiblity of a loan only for Tution fees. And wanted to ask if there is a possibily for a Student Loan for Maintenance (not Grant) for me as an European student from Lithuania? And how do I apply for that? I couldn't find any information on direct.gov.uk page's Finance, or anywhere else.

Thank you for your help! I really need this Loan (because I think EU students can't get Maintenance Grant), so I could pay for my accomodation...

I think you (and me, since I am in the same situation) are both screwed!

:frown:

Chu bibi! (that's the only thing I know how to say in lithuanian :P)

Reply 2

So you mean we can't get no Grant or even Loan for Maintenance?..

It's Chulpk Bibi, and yeah - I think a lot of foreigners knows this one LOL  Nice to meet you

EU students can only get tuition fee loans. Any other help has to come from your home country if they offer any.

Unless you meet the criteria to be classed as a migrant worker. If you are coming to the UK because you are going to study here, then I would say no.

They require that you lived in the uk for like 3 years prior to the time you request the financial aid (unless it's tuition fee loan, then they're cool)

I have a few friends from Kaunas! Crazy drinkers! and the best snowball-throwers I've ever met! (though they suck at football :P )

EU students are not eligible for maintenance loan.

i'm in the same situation :frown:

-I'm definitely gonna have to get a part time job though...otherwise I'm jacked...

Taiko, and how about if I come there to work, and study? I mean I will come in summer, start working, and ask for the maintenance grant, and also start studying? Isn't that the same? I mean as long as I'm working, they should probably don't care what else I'm doing, right?

TenerifeRockstar, wow that's great! Yeah, lithuanians know how to drink, but not like russians though  Where r u from? And where will you be studying?

You can get a bursary (normally 1000p) from your University if they offer it. I was offered this welcome bursary in Newcastle, Liverpool and Hull but I guess every Uni has it.

Reply 10

Yeah, but the bursary isn't enough. Damn...

Why on earth should the UK taxpayer subsidise an EU student's maintenance costs?

Reply 12

roubiliac, I'm talking about a loan.

And on your question - why do you think UK government wants students from other countries to study in their universities? That's also a reason why they could provide a support for those students, so they would be more interested in studying in UK. No one would ever go out of their home country, especially with a better education system, to study in UK if there won't be any help from UK's government.

UK wants more students in their unis, that is why they provide support for them. And it seems only natural if they could provide not only a loan, but a grant for EU students too. It's just how it works - they give us education, we come to them.

I think that the European Union hooks them up with money if they help "developing a european unity" by offering loans to European Students.

I heard from some not so reliable source, so I am not sure... :s-smilie:

Towka,
I was born in Uruguay, but I am Italian (because it was an italian colony and my family is Italian) and I live in Tenerife (the Canary Islands, Spain)

But I met my lithuanian friends in Germany, when I was doing some Erasmums internship.

I'll be Studying German and International Trade in University of Portsmouth!

And yeah, they drank almost as bad as Russian, they would have dry Vodka for breakfast!!

Insane if you ask me...

I think you will find they only offer a tuition fee loan to those from the EU because they have to. They are not particularly bothered about attracting people from other countries. Universities on the other hand are keen to attract international students from countries outside the EU because they can charge them higher fees.

What do you mean "they have to", man? Are you saying someone put a gun to UK's government head and said give that freakin loan to everyone who comes from EU? Well, I don't see that happening in any other country, so why UK? Thanks for your answer.

Reply 16

But all other countries don't do that, only UK?

in DENMARK the university is FREE, for all EU students:wink:
i was thinking to go there because is free, but UK is far more good  it is worth the 3k pounds per year, coming from the loan,of course:smile:

As I said I have no problem with you borrowing to pay for tuition costs. But why should you be able to borrow from the UK Government for living costs? Why shouldn't the Lithunanian government pay it or lend it to you? As for your assertion that the Govt wants foreign students it does, but non-EU students pay between £10000 and £13000 a year tuition fees rather than £3200 a year that Home/EU students pay. Who do you think the universities would rather have?

Hi Powka,

My sister is currently exploring the same opportunities as you are and here is what she found out so far:

1.There are no maintenance loans or grants available to EU students
2.You are only eligible for tuition fees loan
3.Under the Lithuanian education reform, which, as far as I know, is very recent, students are now able to borrow up to 50,000 litu, half of which is allocated for tuition fees and the rest are meant to cover maintenance/general living expenses.

I am originally from Lithuania myself, but have been living in UK for over seven years, so I am eligible for the same financial support as home students.

Which university will you be going to, by the way?
