Aberystwyth

Hey all.

I'm thinking of going to Aberystwyth for a Software Engineer Meng.

I just wondered if anyone has been there already as its one helluva way to go from Derby to Aberystwyth for an open day.

All your opinions would be appreciated (whatever course you did).

My friend has just started english there...and she seems to like it..the course isnt what she expected, but she says that the people are nice enough. I think I woul reccommend a visit before deciding to go there, as it is going to be bad if you have to spend three years (or four) of your life there and dont enjoy it.

I was at aber. You definitely need to visit because its one of those places you either love or you hate. All my friends loved aber so much I'm the only one that has left all my friends got jobs in town. Its a small town but there are masses of pubs and taxis a little cinema, little bowling alley it has McDonalds and Burger King what more could you want :wink:

You find that if you need to shop you might have to go a bit further afield because the variety of shops isnt that great theres enough for day to day life though.
I've had a group of friends who did the software engineer course its a good course. I know someone who is now doing a PhD.
If you visit on an open day try to ask about or see all of the different halls of residence they vary quite a lot. I recommend Trefloyne which is next to campus, the halls that have been refurbished in Cwrt Mawr are nice too but I wouldnt live in Rosser or the student village. Rosser is en suite which is nice but as a consequence the rooms are small and there are loads of doors it reminds me of a prison block and the students there dont tend to socialise as much. The same goes for the student village it is small houses which tend to be mainly third yr students the first years are a bit isolated if you dont know anyone. The new seafront halls are great but then you have the problem of having to get out of bed earlier to get to campus. There is normally a free bus for students from the pier or there was in my day. You really need to be ok with hills to live in aber but it is a great little town. Oh and the best bit is, in the summer you can take your revision to the beach which is class!!

Plus alcohol is really cheap. In my day on a wednesday nights you could get at various pubs tequila shots for 50p and triple vodka 99p.

The draw backs really are the isolation with the rest of the world. Its great if you like Wales, but if you dont I wouldnt apply and the hills, and also it is a little bit detached from industry. I dont think it is so bad with the computer dept though but you have to actively find out when the careers fairs etc are it isnt advertised too well or wasnt in my day anyway. I loved it.

C'mon...who doesn't like Wales? :wink:

Might I suggest taking a look at Cardiff aswell? They do some very good computer courses.

Well i went there a few weeks ago on an open day which was just for my college IT group (15 of us or so), so not really a proper open day. Anyyyywayyyy, i was well impressed! The head honcho guy, Mark Ratcliffe i think the name is (remember that as he says he gets confused with mark radcliffe on the radio sometimes) was absolutely kick ASS! He spoke to us for an hour or so and my god he was so enthusiastic and helpful, insightful...the guy knows his stuff!

Rest of the uni seems decent enough as well but i admit we didnt get much of a look round alas :-/

Im not considering it as it doesnt do what i want to do but if i wanted to do programming then it would be a choice!

Get down there and see what you think i say! :]
